This pet can hit like a truck under the right conditions. It one shot my Emerald Whelpling of equal level. With Arcane Storm up (courtesy of an Azure Whelpling or other pet), cast Drain Power/Amplify Magic (depending on your pet's level). On the next turn, cast Mana Surge. Incredible amounts of damage, even without the bonuses for matching families.

If you're considering levelling a magic pet for the achievements relating to levelling a pet from every family -- don't pick this one. Even though it is rare, its abilities (particularly Mana Surge, which you're stuck with until the pet hits level 20) seem to have a terrible hit rating or something. I seem to miss 70+% of the time when battling with this pet.. overall kind of disappointing.

The tooltip for Mana Surge doesn't mention that the ability "has a high chance to miss" like other tooltips do, but I can assure you that it does. Even at level 25 against low level battle pets, it misses 30%-50% of the time. That may not be the case under the effects of something like Arcane Storm, but so far I have found no other way to increase the chance to hit of this spell.

This pet is the lame brother of the 7/17 breed Mana Wyrmling. If you really like this pet's moveset (Presumably Drain Power/Reflection as a combination), then I suggest you get a Mana Wyrmling and upgrade to a 7/17 Rare. While I'm not personally certain that upgrading via battle-stone retains breed (I've heard it doesn't, but that might be dated), I can say without a doubt that a 7/17 Mana Wyrmling will outperform a 3 Shimmering Wyrmling and its increased obtaining difficulty makes it an asset.

The purchased items Shimmering Wyrmling and Shimmering Wyrmling require reputation, but the reward satchel/black market item Shimmering Wyrmling and this caged battle pet Shimmering Wyrmling do not.
