These birds are a bit hard to tame as a level 27 hunter due higher level mobs in the area and the fact that this bird flies around above the mobs, making it hard to catch one of these birds without aggroing the surrounding mobs. Might make it easier, if you are a lower level character wishing to tame one of these to ask a higher level player to help keep the mobs off you while you are trying to tame one.

I actually think it was pretty easy. Just get to Utgarde keep and get yourself killed, resurrect yourself, and look left - one is sitting next to you. Tame, and you're proud owner of Daggercap Hawk!
Was quite easy as lvl 38.

So I got this crow on my tauren hunter tonight. The run was fairly easy even as a level ten. Only a few inconvenient deaths.

What bugs me is actually the model itself. He doesn't fly up high, but always hovers right above the ground, even when attacking. I guess I was hoping for better.

I was a little bugged by the height at which he flies too. Ah well, it's still not too bad.

For anyone who wants one of them, easiest way I found was once you get off the boat, follow the path up the cliff and across the bridge. Once you're just past the bridge, you should be able to target them. At that point, look off the cliff. There's a series of small ledges you can drop down to, one at a time. You'll eventually drop all the way down behind a bridge, which these sit on, and one flies above. There's no mobs in this area, so tame and then hearth out - no fuss, no muss and you've just got a cool-looking pet that other lowbie hunters will envy you for. :)

Has anyone noticed that this guy is a little bit slower than the average pet? He can't seem to keep up with a mob if I pull aggro off of him...

Amazingly easy! Took my 22 draenei to tame this guy, didn't even get attacked by mobs. Ended up jumping down to suicide and res next to the bird. Very pretty, and yeah flies close to the ground but so does my moth, so I'm used to it.

I recommend it to any young hunter who wants to feel like he has a pet druid. ^.~

I caught this guy as a level 10 tauren hunter. Actually quite easy, cause I had a 73 mage clearing the way for me. Only died once, in the field of angry snarly wolfies. XD

This guy has some odd behaviors as a pet.

As stated above, he flies low to the ground. I actually rather prefer this, as I find pets moving in the way of my camera a bit annoying to deal with.
For non-combat he seems to only have a hover animation...so when walking around with him, it looks a bit odd (For anyone with a druid flight form, I know you've seen the model's "fly" animation. It's quite different.).
He doesn't seem to react to the light in the area you're in. As an example, when it's dark, look at him compared to yourself, or other pets. It's like when you hover over someone with your mouse or have them selected, how they're brightened, only he's like that permanently. When you actually do select him, there's no change in the color/brightness.

As of 4.0.3, these bugs all still exist.

Overall, he's actually a pretty nice pet, if you can get over a few annoying bits. For having a pet that's pretty unusual-looking as far as carrion birds go, I think it's a good tradeoff. :3

Oh, and here's some combat info:
Being around Utgarde Keep, the usual opponents these birds come up against are people about 10 times their level, if not more. However, when fighting these guys, you have to be careful. When attacked, these birds spawn at least 10 level 80 versions of themselves, and will swarm and kill anyone coming after them...

Just kidding. They do make kind of a funny squawk sound when you whack them into the dirt though! :D

easier than i thought to tame, im level 12 so... yeah, only took an hour, but i took a wrong turn and have a slow cpu. could probilly have done in a half hour, once you het to the edge with the giant ppl all you have to die, and rez. then they're right there... i named mine Charizard =D

Just tamed one of these tonight on my little level 10 troll hunter, since I wanted a "challenge" pet and running to Dun Morogh just isn't enough these days ( XD ). He still has the issue of only having the hovering "idle" position, even when moving, and there still seems to be the lighting issue. Perhaps Blizz never meant these particular birds to be tameable at all?

I believe the "bug" with the way these birds fly is that the swimming animations are being used on land, and vice versa. When I went underwater, all of sudden he started flying and acting like he should.

This bird is relatively easy to obtain, either going solo or with the help of a higher level friend. I've done it both ways, each way on a different server and still managed to tame it just fine =) The first version is Horde-centric. I've edited this towards the end to include an Alliance-centered version.

** Horde version: **
Starting at Undercity, take the zeppelin to Vengeance Landing.

From Vengeance Landing, go over to High Executor Anselm . and (if you wish to avoid durability damage from deaths) remove your gear. You'll head in that direction into the Bleeding Vale, where the lift that carries you upward to higher ground resides. Be aware that Wild Worg roam around and near the lift, and their aggro status plus level difference will make for deaths trying this adventure solo at lower levels. If you have a friend who can help clear mobs, this one section will make the biggest difference in your journey.

Once you make it up the lift (and say hello to Sergeant Gorth), the road straight ahead of you that leads to Utgarde Keep will be yours to travel. Various Shoveltusk monsters can aggro from a distance, though they can be avoided / taken out by a higher level friend.

While traversing the roadway, a few Winterskorn Spearman will be nearby, though are reasonably easy to avoid when going solo. The path eventually leads to Utgarde Keep, which is home of the target mob you wish to tame.

Upon reaching Utgarde Keep, the next move varies slightly depending on whether you're going solo or have a bud in tow.
Without the aid of a friend, your easiest option is to dive into the waters below, where the sharks or the mobs at the dockside will eagerly greet you with death. Upon dying, you'll be at a res-healer with Daggercap Hawks on your right/around you. Res + tame = victory.

With the help of a friend, you may go down one of the ramps at Utgarde / inside an alcove and out to your left to the other side, where some Daggercap Hawks fly around and perch. The only pain-point here ~~is an aggro PVP mob, but he IS avaoidable by sticking to the wall on your right-hand side~~ has been moved inside the Utgarde Keep instance, and no longer bothers Horde players attempting this.

Either way, at the end of this process, you'll be the proud owner of a brand new Daggercap Hawk. This bird does share the same "skin" as the Fjord Crow mobs that encircled you at Bleeding Vale. This is also the same look as the lower level Druid flight form (base flight form). The Daggercap Hawk is a wonderful alternative for Horde-hunters who don't want to go into Alliance territory trying to obtain either the Strigid Screecher or Strigid Owl mobs.

** Alliance version: **
The fastest way to do this (for a lower level Alliance character, getting minimal assistance) involves getting a portal to Ironforge, running through the South Gate Pass into Loch Modan (at Valley of Kings), then making one's way into Wetlands and Menethil Harbor. Taking the boat at Menethil Harbor carries you to Valgarde in Howling Fjord, putting you just south of Utgarde Keep and Utgarde Pinnacle. After reaching Valgarde, it'll be a death-run for lowbies, aiming northward to Wyrmskull Village where the various Dragonflayer NPCs, such as Dragonflayer Thane, will eagerly invite you to die.

You'll need to die near Wyrmskull Village's campfire (roughly 57.9 54.0) in order to get to the Utgarde Keep spirit healer. Once resurrected, there should be a Daggercap Hawk directly ahead of you, ripe for the taming. If by some oddity there isn't one there, you can circle slightly to the right of the spirit healer point, and at least one should be sitting close enough for you to tame. Game, set, match.

I got one on my hunter, at level 11, and I couldn't stand the animation bug. Coming from a Druid, it was just too nerve-grating. I really hope Blizzard fixes this, cause I was looking forward to him. I love the combat animations, so I'm really disappointed that his animations are so screwy. :( I'll stable him for now.

Easily done with a level 10 hunter. Horde characters:

1. Get killed by a Worg in the surrounding area.
2. As a ghost, run to the spirit healer by Utgarde Keep, but don't rez, otherwise you'll rez back at your spot of death.
3. Instead, log off and log back in, then rez. That should allow you to rez by UK, regardless where you died, and a Daggercap Hawk should be in viewing distance.

This way shouldn't take more that a couple of minutes.

This works because logging back on loses your character's association with that particular graveyard.

Just picked up this beauty with my lvl 13 Belf, and she was worth the trip. I'm not sure what you meant by hovering, but mine is happily flapping away at shoulder level while I leave them idle to type this. The light doesn't react to her though, as mentioned before.

It maybe be cool looking but it will be hard to get to it by yourself. I think you should get at least a level 80 to help you get it. But its totaly worth it.

I just picked up one of these on my 18 hunter. Not that hard as long as you keep thinking "Today is a good day to die!" and speaking Klingon to yourself. DaH wIj toQ DIchDaq Qaw' SoH! (look it up)

BTW found him at 60.7, 48.9 just to the east of the spirit healer

Picked up my birdie today on my lv17 hunter, the hardest bit was realising I still had a wetlands run to do!

It does still suffer with the hovering animation thing (not tried out the lighing thing, never had a problem before but I keep my graphics really low anyway cos my computers a bit old :P) but its such a unique pet for a low level to have I don't mind too much.

Called mine Sikorsky after the Black Hawk helicopter of the same name :D

Just tamed one at level 10.
The strategy of revive at the utgarde keep GY works.

Also, I'm not sure if the flight is still bugged, if it is, it looks good even when bugged.

According to http://www.wowwiki.com/Spirit_healer this trick does not work anymore about going to a different spirit healer. They must have fixed it in 4.0.1, I don't know how dokhldamo somehow did it, but according to wowwiki and my own personal attempts, it no longer works

I tried it several times to tame this bird on my lvl 10 hunter, kept sending me back to vengence landing GY...

run and death time for me :)

This bird seems bugged as a hunter pet. I tamed it on a lvl 80 hunter, it got bumped to 77, but only had 10 talent points and I was only able to save 3 of those points in actual talents. Dive and Carrion Feeder. The rest of the points reset and wouldn't save. Tried dismissing and resummoning as well as relogging and got the same result each time. Possibly a change with the latest patch? Someone please confirm.

I was able to tame this on my 42 Worgen, not 15 minutes ago. You need to get onto the UK dam, so that you are able to see the path below. I actually found this out by accident, by falling into the corner of the wall and 'catching' on it. I did this the entire way down to the path. Right on the path is the Hawk on a lamp post. :)

Horde - Tamed as a level 17 hunter. From Vengence Landing, SW across the field with Worgs. Died once in the field and once on the elevator platform. At top of elevator, followed the path SW to Utgarde Keep, ran down and in (I forgot which way I went while IN the Keep) to a landing overlooking the village below the Keep and found a hawk sitting on a ledge. I don't know if someone had cleared the way for me but there was no threats from the elevator to the ledge in the Keep. Goodluck!

Yeah, I just got this bird on my level 14 hunter. I had a level 85 friend help me get there. But once you get off the boat in vengance landing, your friend wont be of much use to you any more becuase you agro npc's from REALLY far away. I tried the tirck of just walking as a dead ghost to the spirit healer right next to Utgarde keep. It didnt work. It brought me back to life back at the vengance keep GY. So he brought out his mekgineers chopper (two person mount) and we road along the coast just to the right (look on your map, you'll see where I am talking about) I died only 1 time before he was able to get me close enough so that my default GY was the one right next to Utgarde keep. Other than that, I think just about the only other way you could do it is just suicide and run towards the keep as many times as it takes (probably several) until your default GY is the correct one. Then just let the spirit healer res you, turn to the side, and you will see one of the birds. I tamed it the first try no problems. And it looks REALLY cool too. And no one else at this level will have this bird. It leaves the other noobs in awe...

Alliance: Fairly easy....get on boat from Menethil to Fjord. Once boat comes out of the cave on its u-turn, hope off into the water closest to the Dam. Yull probably die once from getting eaten by a shark, but this should bring you to the Spirit healer right where you want to be. If not, rez as far from your corpse, close to the dam, as you can, the rest is easy.

I got one on my lvl 10 Troll Hunter. Died 3 times.

I took the Zep from undercity and basically took the path from Vengeance Landing (up onto the lift etc) got killed twice by Worgs and once by an Alliance guard/NPC. Rezzed at the spirit healer and the hawk was on a building right next to it. =3

There is a way to get this pet without dying and resurrecting at the spirit healer. I did it on my Alliance character, which is much easier as Utgarde Keep is just right there. I think it is also possible for a Horde character... though the dying thing would be much faster.

Step 1: Position yourself in front of, and facing, the steps leading to Utgarde Pinnacle then look to your left. You should see a path heading downwards. (The building would be on your right and Lake Cauldros will be on your left)
Step 2: Follow that path till you find a ramp on a downwards slope to your right. Go down the ramp. Follow it all the way to the bottom.
Step 3: Go through the entryway on your right and walk straight to the end before taking the first exit on your left. You will now be in the area where the spirit healer should be if you died and resurrected.
Step 4: Walk forward while spamming /tar Dagger if you are as blind as me and can't see the bird even if it's right in my face. Set focus for extra, well, focus.
Step 5: Get within range and hit tame. Bird got. No need for deaths.
