Ingvar the Plunderer is the Final Boss in Utgarde Keep.
The fight can not be reset but he starts at the back of the room, if you pull him forward you can rez after a wipe if needed.

First phase he is in Humanoid form untill he dies.
He has two abilities which are of concern for dps:

Smash: Area knockback which deals heavy damage, melee move out of range. Could be frontal only.
Staggering Roar: An Area effect which deals damage, range is rather large and might not be able to be avoided at all. Also Silences for 6 seconds.

When Ingvar dies he returns as an Undead with full health after a short cut-scene. (don't think you leave combat in between)

His new abilities are somewhat simular:

Dark Smash?: Area knockback which deals damage. Melee move out of range.
Dreadfull Roar: An Area effect which deals shadowdamage to targets within 60yards and silences for 8 seconds. Also adds debuff which increases shadowdamage taken. Line of Sight doesn't seem to help.
Woefull strike: Deals 200% of damage and adds debuff, if healed with debuff the healer will take +/- 1500 shadowdamage.

Ability names and effects might not be 100% correct yet.

Ingvar the Plunderer is the last boss in Utgarde Keep. He directs the attacks on Valgarde from the balcony over the waterfall in Daggercap Bay. He has a total of 114,694 HP.

Phase 1

* Staggering Roar: 2188-2812 damage to all enemies within 60 yards, interrupting any spells being cast for 6 sec. 2s cast, 2s cooldown
* Smash: 17500-22500 damage to all enemies within a 10 yard cone in front of the caster. 3s cast, 2s cooldown
* Cleave: Inflicts 150% of normal melee damage to an enemy and its nearest ally.
* Enrage: Increases attack speed by 5% and size by 5% per cast. Stacks up to 50 times.

Phase 2: Resurrection by Annhylde the Caller

* Dreadful Roar: 3063-3937 shadow damage to all enemies within 60 yards, interrupting any spells being cast for 8 seconds. In addition, targets will take 5% more shadow damage. This effect can stack up to 40 times. 0.5s cast, 2s cooldown
* Woe Strike: Deals 200% of normal melee damage and inflicts the target with Woe Strike. Any healing the target receives while afflicted with WOe Strike deals 1313-1687 Shadow damage to the healer. Next melee
* Dark Smash: Deals 17500 to 22500 Shadow damage to all enemies within a 10 yard cone in front of the caster. In addition, deals 1750 to 2250 Shadow damage to all enemies, knocking them down.
* Shadow Axe: Throws your Shadow Axe at a random target. The axe will arrive at the target and spin in place for 10 sec, dealing 1750 to 2250 damage per second to all nearby enemies.

Strategy:

* Ingvar is found speaking with two Vyrkul riding Proto-dragons at the end of his platform. Once he is agro'ed, the riders will fly away and will not bother your group for the duration of the fight. Make sure to tank Ingvar towards the end of the platform where he is standing and all casters need to stay max range from him. There are two phases to the fight and Ingvar has several devastating abilities, most of which have a cast time allowing the melee to get out of range. In phase 1, Ingvar will enrage early on and the enrage can stack up to 50 times increasing his attack speed by 5% per stack. He also casts Smash and Cleave which are both frontal cone abilities and have cast times allowing the tank to back away or for dps to move behind him. He also has Staggering Roar which deals damage and interrupts all spell casting for six seconds to all enemies within 60 yards. It is very important not to pull agro on this fight, especially if you are ranged, as you will most likely kill whoever is next to you if he happens to Cleave or Smash near any dps.

* Once Ingvar dies, Annhylde the Caller appears and will resurrect Ingvar, making him the Lich King's undead servant. Once again, it is very important to keep Ingvar away from as much of the party as possible. Again he has an spell called Dreadful Roar that will interrupt spell casting for eight seconds and cause everyone to gain a debuff that increases shadow damage taken by 5%. This debuff is stackable. He can also place a curse on a party member that unless removed will cause the healer to take additional damage as well. Ingvar now has an upgraded Smash called Dark Smash that can be devastating unless the tank moves away when he begins to cast it. This ability will knockdown and stun the party for two seconds.

* It is very important to have a curse removal in the party and to watch his casting bar in order to minimize the damage taken by not only the tank, but the entire party.

Ingvar will not turn to follow his target while casting Smash/Dark Smash, so the most critical aspect of this fight from a tanking perspective is watching Ignvar's cast bar and running around/through him when he starts casting. This is the only way to keep damage manageable since your healer(s) will be spending a large part of the fight silenced.

Alright, here's what I found that each archtype should do during this fight:

All Classes:
During Phase 2, move out of the Shadow Axe when he casts it or else you'll take damage.

Tank - Phase 1:

Take Ingvar to the edge of his platform where he is initially standing, facing away from the walkway entering the platform (and your groupmates as well).
When he starts casting Smash, either run through him or to the side to get out of the cone.
Make him reface the edge of the platform after Smash or Shadow Axe.

Tank - Phase 2:

Same strategy, except with Dark Smash instead.

Healer - Phase 1:

Make sure that you are at max range with the ranged dps from the tank while he's got Ingvar with his back facing you. This will keep you out of the cone if anything goes wrong.
Be alert and watch for the casting of Staggering Roar. He will cast this a short time after Smash, so stop your casting before he finishes his roar.

Healer - Phase 2:

Same strategy as #2, but with Dreadful Roar.
Watch for Woe Strike, you shouldn't heal with this debuff on the tank, unless you're a priest using Binding Heal.
Dark Smash will also interrupt your spell casting, but will not silence that school.
If you are a Druid, Remove Curse on the Woe Strike.

Melee DPS - Phase 1 & 2:

Stay at max range and to the back of Ingvar so you don't take damage from Smash or Cleave.

Ranged DPS - Phase 1:

Make sure that you are at max range with the healers from the tank while he's got Ingvar with his back facing you. This will keep you out of the cone if anything goes wrong.
Be alert and watch for the casting of Staggering Roar. He will cast this a short time after Smash, so stop your casting before he finishes his roar.

Ranged DPS - Phase 2:

Same strategy as #2, but with Dreadful Roar.
Dark Smash will also interrupt your spell casting, but will not silence that school.
If you are a Mage, Remove Curse on the Woe Strike.

He was really tough. But we succeeded at last. One thing we learned, was that when he uses Shadow Axe and Dreadful Roar healers and dps can hide behind the pillars. Very useful indeed.

You and your party must either be 10 feet away from the blast, or out of its way.
Directions for avoiding "Smash"

Melee: - When Ingvar is casting his, "Smash" ability, run to either the left or the right, out of his view.

Casters: You should always be at least 10 feet back.

Think of his "Smash" ability as a Mages spell, "Cone of Cold".

As of wotlk launch a rogue can vanish after he dies in human form and use jumper cables to perform a battle rez on a fallen teammate. This is not normally possible for a rogue during a boss fight.

Also recommend any healers add him to your focus while you heal the party. That way you can watch his castbar while you heal your party and avoid the roar a lot easier. Priests throw up a lightwell after phase one-it makes healing and quick mana regen easier in preparation for phase 2. Make sure your party knows about it though. If i had a silver piece for every lightwell that didn't get used....

Ingvar definitely takes some gear and properly specced players, however, Ingvar is more of a fight of skill than anything (which makes him a perfect introductory boss). Knowing when to avoid his smashes and cleaves, to stop casting when he roars, and to pay attention and decurse people, makes all the difference, and makes him fairly simple.

That, and if you kill him relatively quickly, he doesn't always use his more devastating abilities, such as Woe Strike and Shadow Axe. Sometimes he doesn't even use them at all. Good luck!

what i found that works is that when he starts casting smash the tank moves behind him to avoid being hit for a ton and also when you hear the horn it means he is going to do the aoe silence. If your a healer or only have a couple schools of spells then you should stop casting till he finishes so you wont get silenced

HEALING TIPS FROM BABALUAYE!

Pull Ingvar between the far set of pillars. This allows the Tank to run through Ingvar (avoiding the smash) and into a pillar--rather than behind one--preventing any LoS issues. Ranged dps and healer should stay as far back on the bridge as possible, and stop casting when the "Roar" raid warning appears.

Spam PoM (Priest) on the tank to mitigate party damage from Cleave, Smash, Staggering Roar, and Dreadful Roar. This will go a long to way in keeping the tank primed for a Greater Heal and the rest of the party alive. And, don't be afraid to use PW: Shield (especially if you've got the glyph!

Bring a Lock (or two)! Have the Lock drop a Soulwell before the fight starts, and then wait until the cooldown is less than 2 minutes before starting the fight. At the end of Phase 1--while Ingvar is res'ing--summon another Soulwell and replenish your stones. (Use stones early so cooldown is done during Phase 2)

Locks should use Fel Hunters, and keep them on passive behind the casters. The extra mana regen is a big help, and you won't miss the dps since most pets get wiped out from the radials.

Save your Shadowfiend (Priest) for Phase 2, and use it immediately after one of Ingvar's radials...otherwise it'll get crushed, and you will get no mana (...unless you have a glyph).

Tanked him as a DK (heroic)

first time i tried to avoid the smashes and got my rogues killed and wiped

second time we decided i would "soak up" the smashes, and it worked fine

23k armor, 522 defence (yea..) and i saved Icebound Fortitude and Bone Shield for the smashes, they hit me for 3500 and 4000 or something, really easy to heal through tbh.

he doesnt hit very hard anyway, so pretty easy to keep your tank topped imo, only problem was that whirly attack in undead form causing healer-pressure

Just did this heroic last night. Very easy actually. I mean heck, the healer wasn't even paying attention and myself and the feral druid died leaving warlock, death knight, and priest alive, they literally "three manned" the boss, both phases. It is exactly the same strategy as regular, just more damage.

@ spell casters : when you see him cast his staggering roar (silence), you can start casting a different spell in another tree to avoid silence in your main tree.

for example, holy priests can start a mind blast cast when he casts staggering roar and they can still heal without being locked out of anything but shadow.

Just did this in Heroic last night,
Easy boss, just make sure tank keeps his back the group and strafes out of his Smash/Dark smash.

Healer should avoid healing when roar is being cast.

other than that its a simple Tank and Spank.........
was my groups first Heroic so gear was pretty average.

As a Restoration Shaman I found it quite easy to let the casters stand near me. This way I can Chain heal us all. The advantage to this is that I don't have to heal everyone individually because the chance of getting silenced by the boss' shout will be much greater.

Also don't heal when you don't really need to.
I usually pop a heal and cancel it right before it hits when the tank doesn't need healing. Try not to do this cause it'll also increase the silence effect.

What I also did was to heal right after his silencing shout because i've never seen him using it 2 times in a row.
So time the heals carefully and don't overdo it.

Did Utgarde Keep today on my 71 Unholy Death Knight. Tanked entire instance to Ingvar without wiping at all, and yes it was a pug...

But at Ingvar I knew we'd wipe, so I told our Arms Warrior to tank instead. We wiped once, but the second time we made it (through not really a clean kill of Ingvar)

This instance is fun, cool and awesome. Blizzard did a really good job with this instance!

Just tanked this as a 70 prot warrior with sub-par gear. To cut down on healing in phase 1, when you see him starting to cast Smash, walk through him to the other side. Once he's, face him away from your party again by going back to the edge. The second phase we wiped 4 times cause his dark smash was doing 9k hits. He only did this to me 3 times during the entire fight, so for the first time I used Last stand and a +500hp trinket. The second time I just used an hp pot and sheild block. 3rd time I used shield wall and shield block. Hope this helps someone

Ingvar the Plunderer (Heroic)

The final boss of Utgarde Keep is a moderate challenge due to the amount of damage he can put out, but the mechanics of the fight are not too difficult.

Ingvar is fought in two phases. For both parts of the fight the tank has the busiest job, but it's mostly about positioning. When Ingvar is engaged, the tank should face him away from the rest of the group. Melee DPS should stand behind Ingvar (as they should for most bosses). Ranged DPS and healers should stay near the entrance to the boss' platform.

In the live phase, Ingvar will use Cleave to inflict some damage to the tank and the nearest ally in range. This is easily healed through. Additionally, Ingvar will use Enrage and this stacks, causing him to deal more damage each time. More dangerous is Smash. This ability affects a cone in front of Ingvar and does a significant amount of damage -- enough to one-shot low HP tanks. This is easily avoided by watching Ingvar's cast bar, as Smash has a fairly long cast time. Once you see him about to Smash, the tank should walk around or through the boss to get out of the cone. Once Smash has occurred, the tank should then position Ingvar away from the group again as quickly as possible. The other ability that is used is Staggering Roar. This ability also has a fairly long cast time so keep watching the boss' cast bar. Staggering Roar does moderate damage to all party members engaged with the boss (60 yard range) and, more importantly, interrupts all spells being cast. If a caster is interrupted, the caster is silenced for 6 seconds and is unable to cast any other spells. This is best avoided by stopping all casts before Staggering Roar triggers or by using instant cast spells. Casters that are not interrupted are not silenced.

Once Ingvar is defeated in living form, he is raised as an undead vykrul to fight once again.

Phase two, the undead phase, is much more challenging. The tank should continue to face Ingvar away from the rest of the party. Ingvar will use Woe Strike on the tank which is a heavy hit that also afflicts the target with a curse that deals moderate shadow damage to anyone that casts a healing spell on the victim. This curse can be removed by normal methods. Ingvar will now use Dark Smash instead of Smash, which hits anyone in a cone in front of the boss with heavy shadow damage, deals moderate shadow damage to all party members, and knocks all members of the party down. It is very important for the healer to top off anyone that is low before this happens, and for the tank to run around or through the boss as in phase one. Dreadful Roar is similar to Staggering Roar from phase one but hits harder and has a longer 8 second silence. Additionally, each time Ingvar roars in this phase, players will acquire a stacking debuff that causes them to take 5% more shadow damage. Lastly, Ingvar will use Shadow Axe, which sends an axe at a random target. The axe will spin in place for 10 seconds and deal heavy damage per second to all nearby players. As soon as the target sees the axe coming toward them, that player and all nearby players should move away from the area for the duration of the affect.

Some tips for the fight. Don't heal a player afflicted with Woe Strike unless you have to in order to keep them alive. It is critical to watch the boss' cast bar for all smash and roar abilities and handle these as described above. Stay within line of sight -- the pillars on the boss' platform can cause a player or the boss to go out of line of sight if you aren't careful. Burn Ingvar down as fast as possible while managing the technicalities of the fight.

When you Start the fight, the Tank MUST face him away from party.
He will use an Ability called Slam. And this causes high damage.
If Spellcasters or Dpses are hit they could get badly damaged or even die.

He also uses Staggering Roar, but its not much to worry about. But the Healer must be sure to keep tank healed well, as the Tank will Take serious amounts of damage really Quick.

He's actually easy to kill...
But when he's dead. He will be ressurected. He must be fought again.

He get two new Abilities during this phase,
Dreadful Roar-Instead of Staggering Roar
Dark Smash-Instead of Smash (Still does lots of damage.)

Be aware of that he also throws his axe, and it begins to spin around. When that happens, try avoiding the axe, as it deals alot of damage over time and really quick.
He's a Tough one indeed, but mind this, and he should be an easy kill.

When my group did this we beat his first form fine, but on the second form we wiped about 8 times. On our last attempt we got him down to about 3k but everyone except me died. However, I critted him for over 3k, which ended the battle. However, being a rogue I couldn't rez anyone, so they had to release. Unfortunately after he died everything (except bosses) had respawned so they couldn't come back and loot his head. Just thought I'd warn everyone that if you release after he's dead, you'll have to fight all the way back to him to loot him.

During the beta the Val'kyr who ressed him would say something like : "You have been judged and deemed worthy" when he rezed him.(which brought to mind the actual Valkyries in Norse mythology)

Apparently they changed it so it's more of a Necromancer ressurection rather than a glorious comeback of a fallen warrior to make him look more like a "bad guy".

Vargul are former vrykul who have been brought to undeath because they were not found worthy by the Lich King. They are the losers of the challenge to "ascend" at Jotunheim. The winners are named ymirjar. Unlike other undead, they appear to retain some level of intelligence, and consenquently many resent their fate.

Btw, the Val'kyr who resses him says he is damned, because he failed in killing the group. When he dies, he speaks abit fast, still yelling and says ''No! I can do better! I can...''

It should be noted that Deadlyboss mode mixed up his "roars" with "smashes", so during (for example) "Darksmash" It will show blue "Stop casting" alert, which if you dont pay atention will lead you to start casting afterwards during the real silencing effect of Dreadfull roar. Since im unexperienced healer, this gave me some headache. It happened on normal run, dunno for HC.

Patch 3.2.2: Hes Level is NOT constant! Its actually variate. On heroic hes a level 81 (elite) but sometimes a level 82 (elite). Its slightly weird...

Ingvar the Far-Travelled (Old Norse: Yngvarr víðförli) was the leader of an unsuccessful Viking attack against Persia, in 1036–1042.

There were several Caspian expeditions of the Rus in the course of the 10th century. The Yngvars saga víðförla describes what was the last Viking campaign in the Caspian in 1041, adding much legend to the historical facts. This expedition was launched from Sweden by Ingvar the Far-Travelled, who went down the Volga River into the land of the Saracens (Serkland). While there, they apparently took part in the Georgian-Byzantine Battle of Sasireti.

There are no less than twenty-six Ingvar Runestones, twenty-four of them being in the Lake Mälaren region of Uppland in Sweden, referring to Swedish warriors who went out with Ingvar on his expedition to the Saracen lands, an expedition whose purpose was probably to reopen old trade routes, now that the Volga Bulgars and the Khazars no longer proved obstacles. A stone to Ingvar’s brother indicates that he went east for gold but that he died in Saracen land.

Currently he is soloable on HC at lvl85
I succeeded in it with a low geared lvl85 worgen arcane mage in pvp spec
just kite and spam instants unless you see a gap to cast an arcane blast
Evocation when he gets ressed and mirror image right before he yells to carve your skull, then pop Time Warp and all other power ups and spam arcane blast, it's a matter of 10-15 seconds then

Ingvar is but a shadow of his former self, who used to be actually pretty difficult back in Wrath. Don't even have to bother avoiding any of his abilities, don't even need to hide behind the pillar. Poor guy... we'll miss your former glory as long as we live.

Just as a note for those soloing him at 100 on (regular) Heroic, with the quest to kill him active in your log... He dies once, when you 1-shot him. He gets rezzed, and comes after you again. Don't kill him immediately. Let him get one hit on you, before you one-shot him again.
This lets the gate at the back end of the walkway you took getting to him to open, so you can drop down the two tubes to the quest turn-in at the beginning of the instance.

It looks like with zone scaling (and instance scaling) this guy becomes a better match for the party and is no longer a pushover, and the mechanics come back into play. In a group of 60s last night we wiped three times before a new healer came in and reminded us (particularly my Arms Warrior DPS) to get BEHIND him.

The fight consists of two phases. The death and subsequent resurrection of Ingvar by Annhylde the Caller marks the transition from Phase 1 to Phase 2.

Nobody but the tank should be standing in front of Ingvar; he deals massive frontal damage.

Casters should cancel casting their non-instant spells as soon as Ingvar uses Staggering Roar, otherwise they will be silenced for a few seconds.

In Phase 2, Ingvar deals more damage and receives some abilities.

Healer should not heal players afflicted by Woe Strike as this deals damage to the healers.
