I killed this mouse and he gave the quest "Slimy yet satisfying". It rewarded 2g 80s 90c 2 Barter bricks and 200 Loamm Niffen Rep. Also received "little black book" quest for same rewards. These were both from my 1st map today.

Dug this guy up and came real close to lighting him up. Dismissed my pet instead and hoped for the best on Tame Beast. Me and Treasurewhiskers are best of buds now.

THIS MOUSE SHOULD BE MARKED AS A RARE SPAWN, after resetting the dig site every 30 minutes, close to 24 hours, the gold and black skin color FINALLY appeared.
Here is some advice for anyone having bad luck:
1)REQUIRES renown 9 with the Nifflin for Myrrit Affinity
2) If you're using big pets, dismiss them so you can see the color of Treasurewhiskers
3) Spawn the treasure chest, that way you can see if the instance truly reset or leave the purple Treasurewhiskers alive
4) Kill the mob(s), at one point I ignored the "boss" and left after revealing the purple mouse, this prevented the instance from resetting
5) KEEP AT IT, don't give up. You get 3 dig sites a week so if you already did them, you have 3 more chances next week.

When tamed, you can't change its name like you can do with other pets.

To those wondering, as of patch 10.1.0 Treasurewhiskers is the only gold mouse variant in game; however it also can appear with a purple skin which is less unique as it can be found on other NPCs.

So in combination with the fact you aren't always guaranteed to spawn a Treasurewhiskers during a Sniffenseek dig AND it can spawn with the purple skin, that makes the gold variant very rare! ( And thus sought after by hunters! )

Keep in mind once tamed, you will loose the rewards for killing the mouse normally. ( Though one could say taming the mouse is it's own reward. ^^ )

Edit: Would also like to add, once tamed it will already be named to 'Treasurewhiskers' and makes sounds when clicked. I've also noticed it has a gold clinking sound when summoned. Overall a very fun pet!

After 14 resets I finally tamed this golden cutie.
I followed a guildie's tip for reset (mind you you need the Myrrit Affinity from renown 9 with Nifflin) and:
1. Started dig > sniffed all over > dirt mount? Pop it.
2. If mouse is pink, I killed it > got quest a couple of times (different quests) > used stairs icon to leave the place WITHOUT FINISHING
3. logged out (got tons of alts to do stuff) > after 15 minutes, came back to enter / continue the same dig
4. Sniff all over (the mound of dirt can move) > pop it > see if it's pink > rinse, repeat.

I tried entering within 10 minutes or so but there were no mounds, but after 15 minutes coming back there was always a new mouse, just the pink one MUCH more often.

Don't lose hope, it's RNG but every 15 mins not such a bad thing (just don't finish the dig) for such a lovely model and color!

Now if only Blizz would bring back the option to spec our hunter pets...

ADDITIONAL UPDATE - 10.1.5

HUNTER NOTE: This has become a pain of a weekly quest after you have done all of them. But I still do it. It paid off today because after sniffing today, I got the GOLD one that is highly desirable, from what I can understand. I'm sure I will have to wait another six months to get a second one. A duel set of these, along with the battle pet which I got about a month ago, will look awesome. Add on the new gold Dream set, and it will look very "matchy.: Will I fight this way? Probably not. My jaguars from Booty Bay stay alive a lot longer!

Additional Comments for EVERYONE!

Every time you finish the main treasure map objective, you will get a small timer on your debuff bar saying the cave will collapse in 15 minutes. Use every free moment to sniff around the treasure location. Everything. I've been in four treasure locations today. By the fourth one, they start repeating. So save your maps. Usually, you get a new one in the mail as soon as you return.
You will get a Treasurewhiskers each time. Kill it. I've gotten two barter blocks off the last two I've killed. One item was for a professions vendor turn-in, which got me two more barter blocks and a two-hundred-plus reputation.

For Hunters - Update From Original Post

I got a second map this week from a quest. If you have not learned yet, to get Myrrit to accept a new map, click on him and then on the map in your backpack, and you can go on another treasure hunt. We went to a new location, I finished the map quest, but again, I had him sniff around some more in other areas of the treasure room. At first, he got nothing. Then I took him to the opposite side of the room. He smelled something, and then I had him dig for it. Boom! Got the TreasureWhiskers. Now he is not pink/white. He is grey/pink, so not the white/pink everyone wants. But he is a TreasureWhiskers, and he retains the name. Too bad they don't have individual class awards, i.e., get all the Treasurewhiskers colors...

I had seen what I thought was the StoneWhiskers" earlier in the day and went to read about it. There were three Horde players with two of these, and they had changed their names. I read about it being a battle pet and went and got the one with "gold ears," never found the one that was pink or white. During my first few quests of the day, I leveled to 9 Renowned. I still did not know about this mouse. Didn't even think about it as a hunter pet. Which was stupid, considering the Whiskers I saw were almost a dusty white/pink and pretty big.

I got the Your Weight In Gold map dig. No problem.

I did that; no problem, other than it sucks for hunters. (Hint, Hunters, if you have a lot of hit power, take your spirit pets for mending.)

Knowing Blizzard, I never immediately leave the treasure areas. There will always be something they say you missed later on, some achievement, and there will be no way to get back to it. So I made Myrrit keep sniffing. We found a few more treasure bags, resulting in more fragments and other odds and ends. We started below and then returned to where the main treasure was. Two sniffing and little "White/Pink Treasurewhiskers" pops up. He was yellow, so he did not care about me. I tried everything, pulled out battle pets, etc.. nothing! I finally clicked on him, resulting in stupid me having to kill him.

I got out, came straight to Wowhead, and looked up "TreasureWhiskers" to find everyone talking about a hunter pet. This is worse than not getting the rare elite in Silithus all these years!

Moral of the story - KEEP looking when you go on treasure digs. That will help with the normal hunting for him on the outside. Which from all my looking now are only 'grey" color.

Now, I'm going to bed feeling sorry for myself. I may have to drink this sorrow away!

These drop three items for weekly quests to help you to finish A Worthy Ally: Loamm Niffen (or gain Niffen rep in general) and get some Boulders:

From the small sample size I have, the drop rate seems guaranteed but you can get duplicates which won't drop: thus it's not guaranteed you'll be able to do all three weeklies every week (unless you repeat digs 15 minutes later, in that time window you can get rep elsewhere).
