These are typically summoned at Lunker points, a big one right now being 65,74 at the river mouth of the Waking Shores, for five Ominous Conch. You seem to get either one of these or Massive Thresher.
Also to note, though, if you fish normally at the Lunker point, whenever you catch a Conch, you also get the lunker fishing buff, which allows you to pull up a Thresher for no cost; may well be a bug, or just incentive to fish there.

Is there a trick to catching these? I don't seem to real them closer and then they pull me out into the water and get too far away for me to use my harpoon again.

EDIT: I'm assuming a group is recommended/needed.

Not sure if this provides any different loot, but you can target/attack it after it's summoned.

If you kill it before it finishes casting "Going Deep...", then it does give loot.

If, like me, you are wondering why these might be special / important - they're not really.

The Conches you've likely used to spawn this have a small chance of spawning a large, elite rare frog Swog'ranka. This is what you want to use the Conches for.

I haven't tried summoning him again after the first time he spawned, but I would wager it's worth saving any conches you have for the next day.

There really is no good info on using Ominous Conch and what to do when a Gigantic Thresher is summoned (which is the majority of time).

Basically if it's just you just kill it, don't bother to use the Iskaaran Harpoon. The Iskaaran Harpoon is for bringing it onshore so multiple ppl can loot it. You also have a chance of losing it (high chance) when you use the Harpoon and getting nothing.

Just in case anyone is wondering, no, pulling it does not give you different loot or higher chances at certain loot. If you are by yourself, you will not be able to pull it ashore. Just kill it instead of wasting your time pulling it.

I did some testing with damaging them vs just catching them. There wasn't much at all difference in loot. I still got a Draconic Recipe in a Bottle after damaging and killing a lunker as of this day.
