This beast is part of the quest To Serve Spriggan.

"But if this is the afterlife, why are there spriggans here?" you might ask. "Spriggans are in the living realms also, so does that mean they somehow get to stay spriggans when they die? Or are they born of the afterlife like the Rivendreth dredges and the Kyrian owl-slaves and somehow escape to Azeroth? Or is Ardenweald just Hell?"

Never fear, for I, a glorionimous gold poster, have the answer.

Spriggans, you see, are indestructible. They are neither alive nor dead, and before you ask, they're not undead either. They always were, and always will be. These vicious little annoyances were there before the beforetime before the beginning of the universe, tormenting Niblonians by the just-then-invented but now ancient art of the fishslap, which was quite a feat as fish didn't exist yet.

When a spriggan dies in the living realms, it immediately appears in the afterlife exactly as it was in life, and in the afterlife, they can't be killed. They do, however, pretend to die, only to pop back up the instant I turn around and throw spiders in my hair. Not everyone notices this, but rest assured, if you think you have killed a spriggan and find spiders in your hair, that is the work of that still-very-much-extant spriggan. The only thing worse is not finding any spiders in your hair - that's when you have to worry!

"But," you ask, "how is it that all spriggans have not long ago been relegated to the afterlife? We kill them in the living realms like the plague they are, so eventually wouldn't they all end up with the dead?"

Ah, and now we come to The Craw, a demon made of the blackness of the universe with a hole in its belly that leads back to the living realms. This demon was bought from the Venthyr at the Dawn of Time for cost of ten billion infinities worth of fish sticks. This is also why the Venthyr are pasty and grey and why sunlight both cooks their flesh and causes them to go mad.

(As proof of this, there is a Watcher in Ardenweald who was once a Venthyr magus, and turned himself into a toad in the attempt to be swallowed and pooped out into the living realms again, so he could resume his mortal life, but the other Venthyr magi discovered him and cast Triple Reverse on his polymorphed self, so that the flow of fish sticks would continue and what was once a Venthyr mind in a toad's body with a botched-cosmetic-surgery face is now a toad's mind in an obviously fake body with a Venthyr face. Go to this NPC and look at his portrait. This proves it.)

In order that the afterlife does not become infested with all the spriggans there are, the Ardenweldians feed the spriggans into The Craw and flush this glorionimous glowing gold crane like a toilet, flushing the spriggans back into the living realms where adventurers must kill them to avoid the living realms becoming overly infested.

And just as raw tiger steak is fed to the cat hunter pets, the cycle of life continues. Namaste.

This is a reference to Larry from "You Awake to Find Yourself in Razor Hill", the surreal, excellent 'text adventure' which played out on the Blizzard forums many years ago. The forum thread no longer exists, but at the time of posting the whole story can be viewed here (note: it is very long). There are other references in game, including Tednug, the orc hunter who walks the road between Razor Hill and Orgrimmar accompanied by his cat Scratchfever.
