Found these all along the road heading North West out of Theater of Pain on Maldraxxus. Easy to catch, use Corgi Pup with Super Bark.

As with many pets that have the potential of a self-kill ability, if you join the battle, you can check and see if it has 'Burst' on the attack bar.
If it does, flee the battle and rejoin until it does not.
This will allow you to capture it without the potential of having it explode on you. Especially good if you find a rare one!

these should not even have the exploding ability, or atleast not useable as an npc for catching

After reading the clue in the pokedex entry and seeing that this does indeed have 38 possible models, I've been testing how to get the other colours with no luck so far.

Here is that entry:
Normally just a plain white in colour, their skin reflects whatever they have eaten and gains wonderful spots of colour depending on the organs digested.

I let one use devour on my pokemon in combat, and it didn't change colour. I even captured it to make sure.

I tamed one and summoned it, moving it near 1) corpses 2) pokemon corpses 3) critter corpses 4) live pokemon 5) live critters, and no colour changes.

I haven't extensively tested whether wild ones will eat my companion pets.

I managed to get the critter version to change colour when I killed it while spree killing a bunch to see if anything would happen. It changed into the dark grey with red belly skin that's second row from the bottom, second from the left in the models tab of this page, but I haven't been able to replicate the change by killing any others.

The only thing I can think of that I haven't been able to test yet, is if, once tamed, they devour other people's companion pets creepy crate style and take on a new skin.

I'm led to believe it has something to do with other pokemon because, after sorting through the 38 skins, the number of basic colours after discarding duplicates, discounting the pale white and the red-spotted-white (the only skin I can find in the wild), the number of options available seems to be this:

Green
Gold
Rose
Tan
Purple
Blue
Light Green
Violet with Red Belly (this is the one I want!)
Red with Purple Belly
Dark Grey with Red Belly (close second)

...And this happens to be 10. The number of pokemon types in WoW is 10.

super bark rocks, 1 shot then switch to
will of remornia followup, capture.
