Jetwing is currently the only known tameable black gryphon. It patrols a central area of The Hinterlands, roughly north of Valorwind Lake. Unlike most of the gryphons in the zone it flies fairly high - I had to dismount in mid-air in order to hit and aggro it, but I'm sure there are other tricks that would work too.

Despite not being flagged rare, it does seem to have a long-ish spawn timer (maybe up to a few hours), so don't be discouraged if you don't find it right away.

Best way to tame is to unequip you weapon first so you don't kill Him
Wait till he flies over the Lake then punch him in the face fall into the water and once close enough cast tame.

This Gryphon, along with many more will be tameable in patch 7.2

Jetwing is level 110 with over 4 million health and is neutral wild. It will aggro to you and survive no problem provided you shoot at it once using any current weapon (as of 7.2) including a fully upgraded Titanstrike (52 traits currently in mine).

Finding it is a bigger challenge. Spawn timer seems to be rather long as I actively looked for it for three to four hours last night just above the tree line and never saw it once despite being the only one in the zone as per /who. Finally found and tamed it early this morning South West of Lake Valorwind, about half way to Shadra'Alor (rough coordinates 38, 64) about fifteen minutes after resuming the hunt for my new companion.

It has no ground animation, never lands even at rest and does not stay by your side when you get on a flying mount and take off.

Has the special ability Updraft:

Your pet beats its powerful wings, slowing the fall speed of both itself and the hunter for 30 sec.

Found him fairly quick, not sure what his timer is. He flies fairly high. I used autoshot him in air and disenaged to reduce fall damage.

When tamed he constantly flaps his wings, hovering slightly above ground. Because of this it's kind of distracting so I'm just going to keep him in my stable

Got Jetwing on Dalaran server at 5:51 am eastern time. Saw him just just a little south of Quel'danil Lodge, and north of the Lake. I was able to follow him towards the lake before shooting him, and falling into the lake as he flew northwest of it. Good luck to others going after him. He's on a really long timer it seems.

This mob is actualy a rare, despite he dont have the silver icon. His flying path is allways close to Valorwing Lake, he cross flying the lake actualy. At this time nobody reported multiple spowning points, the only one know is the one close to the Valorwing Lake. He is a variable level NPC, similar with Broken Islands mobs, but you cant tame it bellow lev 110 as the Tome of the Hybrid Beast require lev 110 to learn. If you dont want to risk a disengage landing, safest way to tame it is to engage him with a Counter Shot when is flying above the lake, you fill fall safely in to the water, and he will come to you. He doesent hit hard and do not have any special ability, is a very easy tame. About respown time, nobody verified yet, but is longer then 3 hours.

Tamed him tonight at 7:09PM PST on Wyrmrest Accord. Since he is yellow you cannot aggro him but since he is 110, you can shoot him and it wont hurt him much. I tried punching him first but died from the fall so if you can't shoot at him, get some type of slow fall. He does fly in some wonky pattern around the lake but I made a macro to target him. Tamed at 5:00 AM server time on Kirin Tor US. I was the only one in the zone so I followed him around a bit looking for a safe spot to pull him down and he passed nearby a little hill at 38.47, 50.92, where I shot him and did not die from the fall or have to disengage to break damage. As reported it appears that he paths in a loop from south of Quel'danil lodge to Valorwind Lake. If you don't have any competition in the zone it's probably best to play it safe, than to overstretch yourself and die and have to find him again, or risk someone else finding him while you run back.

There is a little pond in his flypath, disarm yourself and punch him in the face and try to fall in the water so you dont die, thats how i tamed him

Greetings fellow Hunters!

My taming strategy was bringing with me my trusty partner Ben the wolfhawk! Upon finding Jetwing circling the sky, I flew down below him and summoned the wolfhawk to cast Updraft on me. I quickly dismissed him and flew back up to Jetwing to shoot him once and gently float back down to Azeroth with Jetwing following me. :) Once on the ground it was a simple tame! Hope this helps!

While camping Jetwing, I noticed a "Soaring Razorbeak" flying in the same described path as Jetwing (between the lake, the lodge, and the flight path). The Soaring Razorbeak is unattackable and level 41 and flies pretty slowly. I'd be interested to know if this is some kind of a placeholder for Jetwing.

I'll update this post whenever I tame Jetwing as to whether the Soaring Razorbeak was spawned as well. Has anyone that's tamed Jetwing seen the Soaring Razorbeak while Jetwing was up?

His flying animation when tamed is slower than other gryphons. It's noticeable if you've got two side-by-side.

Has a strange "crumpled" posture when it's first summoned. It's curled up into a ball for a moment or two, then hovers alongside you as normal. I haven't noticed this with old-school hippogryphs. Can't really say about wind riders, as I haven't tamed one yet.

Don't let it discourage you if you really want it though. It's just a little weird.

Here is the macro that I used:

/dismount
/tar Jetwing
/cast Concussive Shot
/Stopattack
/stopattack

not 100% sure which stop attack command is correct, so I have them both on there.
Don't forget to use disengage before hitting the ground. I chose not to put it in this macro for fear of spamming it and wasting my disengage cooldown and splatting on the ground.

This also works great for other tames that fly high in the sky. just replace the name in the targeting portion of the macro.

for Jetwing in particular, I was fortunate enough to have him flying over water, so I didn't need to worry so much about the landing.

Staghelm Server - 2:54pm PST US - Shadowlands 9.2

This is probably one of the easiest rares I've went looking for, aggroed, and tamed. By this time, I think most of us are high enough at the current level cap of "60" to take the damage when we fall. I have 49k in health and an item level of 239.

I found him almost immediately when I flew toward the lodge. I used the following macro to find him:

/cleartarget
/tar Jetwing
/stopmacro
/run local g=GetRaidTargetIndex("target"); if g ~=4 then SetRaidTargetIcon("target", 4) end;
PlaySound(13989)

I found him on the second click of the macro. Thank you to everyone who gave really good descriptions of his approximate locations. I got him at Loc: 41,51

How I decided to tame him:

Flew directly towards him and got some aggro on him enough that he hit me a couple of times for an average of 656 damage in the air but it was not enough to knock me off my flying mount. (Side note: I've heard but can not confirm that if you have your garrison's stable at level three it is suppose to be very hard if not impossible to knock you from you mount?)
Flying down but with him still targeted I got to about at the tree top level. I was able to hit him with a few barbed shots averaging about 900.
Hit escape even before I hit the ground to make sure there would be no extra shots (Those arrows tend to get a mind of their own...)
I did take a some damage from the fall when I hit the ground, but I already had my mouse over Exhilaration and fully healed myself for about 13.5k.
He had not even gotten to me on the ground before I had my taming spell going.

He kept his name. His flapping can be annoying but no more so than my preferred bat out of East Plaguelands.

Jetwing's health level is just over 36k. The normal for any BM pet that is primary.

Interesting facts: I've always use as my main hunter pet the black Jaguar from Jaguero Island of the coast of Stranglethorn. He is fast and has always been able to keep aggro. I've seen him pull aggro from a Horde warrior. (Dang, Devourer swarms of Ardenweald!) So I checked Jetwing's speed. Both of them come in at 1.8 just a little faster than most.

What made me check their speed was an article I read on the site Eyes of the Beast about the speed of a hunter pet. Something that was much more important in Vanilla WOW.

I used the command line recommended: /dump UnitAttackSpeed("target")

This article is almost four year old but it still has some interesting information that I find is still true today. I've been checking animal speeds. Most are about 2.0 but there are a few faster.

Please remember to get this rare and other feathermanes than you will have had to complete the campaign/quests that are explained in the Wowhead.com article Secret Hunter Pets
