My knowledge of copyright law is very amateur but what Blizzard has done does not seem entirely legal to me. If they plan to monetize the addons, who's intellectual property is the addon code? Blizzard played the friendly, happy, "google-style" NON-evil company in the beginning. Developers were told, sure create your own addons, no catch! Now they are seizing that intellectual property for their own? If someone writes a plugin for Firefox, and firefox changes their EULA/TOS to say...All plugins cannot be sold and are now property of Firefox. Is that legal? Were the third party plugins not their OWN intellectual property created by others? And EVEN if that is true, could Blizzard not just rewrite the code from scratch but using the same ideas and get away with it in a "loophole-ish" way? (Its completely bogus they can just take great ideas by bullying people with their lawyers). This was a very BRASH decision by Blizzard and I hope it will be corrected either by Blizzard (I would prefer this way) or overruled. Most importantly: this is bad for game development! Bad for the "virtual world" and community and most of all it is a step backwards in the progression of the MMORPG genre. There are so many great ideas and addons that could be developed to further improve OUR VIRTUAL WORLD! It may be their code but we are holding the 14 dollars a month times 10 MILLION. For those who dont feel like imagnining that, that is a total of 140 MILLION dollars a MONTH revenue. This is a kick to the face of all developers who have worked hard to create meaningful, useful and really amazing addons for the game. The development community for Warcraft was VERY vibrant and full of great innovations with the ability for small businesses and individuals with good ideas to earn a modest living. However as a whole all of these products add up to what I would imagine something worth, in terms of PURE DOLLARS of course, Blizzard cracking down Microsoft-style. What could have been an interesting way for regular people with good ideas to earn a living from developing and supporting their OWN CODE has just been squashed again to make the filthy rich even richer. The good news is, I can tell you right now if Blizzard expects hobby and small business developers to continue working as hard as they have on developing and supporting these addons for absolutely NO income or form of compensation they are wrong. And expect a considerable reduction in the level of quality addons. How do we know Blizzard didnt open up their doors for the open source community only to take advantage of them? To suck all their ideas away with the lure of a place where game developers, freelance, small business, and hobby developers can coexist in a healthy market. This is even more GREEDY than I would have expected from Blizzard. But I suppose capitalism, our copyright system (which is being REWRITTEN RIGHT NOW by companies like Blizzard and the RIAA) and government/corporate initiatives have come to breed such blood sucking vampire companies. If anyone else feels the way I do about this, LET BLIZZARD KNOW!Grab your pitchforks and torches people!http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=16137615197&sid=1
