The first and most well-known is its strength at two-target cleave with Splitting Ice. However, Fire Mages often keep up reasonably well even here with Mastery: Ignite and in practice you see a lot more cleave against three to five targets in raids, where Mastery: Ignite still gets full value while Splitting Ice is hitting just one extra target.

"Funnel damage" to priority targets thanks to Ice Caller has often been considered a niche for Frost Mages, but in practice this often just resulted in doing similar or less than regular single-target damage to the priority target while doing a ton of AoE damage. The main exception to this was in the middle of Battle for Azeroth when Packed Ice was very strong. Right now, Arcane Mage has the best funnel among Mages thanks to talents like Resonance, Arcane Bombardment, and Orb Barrage.

Priority target damage to relatively weak targets with frequent Glacial Spike casts was once a rare but relevant strength of Frost Mage when its cooldown windows were not really very impressive. Because a lot of specializations do most of their damage in their cooldown window, this was a place where the old flatter damage profile for Frost was occasionally useful. This strength isn't really relevant anymore now that Frost is more of a burst specialization itself during Icy Veins.

Tuning

Despite being a simple specialization, it's surprisingly easy to make small mistakes that add up. Frost Mages naturally have a lot of haste, which makes it easy to queue the wrong spell or have small gaps between spells in your rotation.

Even when handling your inputs well, the nature of the specialization with a lot of random procs means that it's also easy to cast the wrong spell if you have a lapse in focus and get a proc that would change the spell you want to use. This also makes it easier to die in raids due to getting distracted by these procs compared to a more deterministic specialization. This has become more of a problem in Season 2 due to Frostfire's buffs amplifying how much you need to keep track of.

Frost has a lot of moments where it can move briefly, but tends to struggle a lot with long continuous movement that is sometimes necessary.

You constantly need to keep an eye of Excess Frost and Excess Fire. You can have up to two stacks of each, but you can still overflow this limit surprisingly quickly. Because consuming Excess Fire gives you Excess Frost and a Brain Freeze, it becomes important to spend Flurry when you have Excess Fire ready to ensure that you aren't going to overcap on Flurry charges or Excess Frost stacks. In some cases, this means spending a Flurry with no precast Shatter combo and when Winter's Chill is already on the target.

Frostfire Empowerment frequently gives you extra stacks of Excess Fire and Excess Frost. While you generally don't need to play around Frostfire Empowerment itself, tracking it is helpful because you know you don't need to stand still when casting Frostfire Bolt.

Brain Freeze is very plentiful with around 75% more procs of the buff than Spellslinger, which results in high Winter's Chill uptime and many stacks of the debuff that go unused.

Spellslinger

Spellfrost Teachings will suddenly reset the cooldown on your Frozen Orb at random times. You want to cast this quickly after it becomes available again, but it generally just feels good.

will occasionally give you a unexpected Brain Freeze. This tends to happen less than once per minute on average, so while it can pop up at an incovenient time where you waste some Flurry cooldown, it doesn't really get too frustrating.

Buff Tracking and Proc Munching: Something should be done about the large number of buffs and their interactions that Frostfire Frost Mages need to keep track of. Currently, it's very easy to find yourself in situations where no matter how you use your procs it feels like you're wasting something and it's very easy to make mistakes when the procs show up unexpectedly.

Mastery Scaling: Damage from Frostfire spells needs to scale with Mastery. The stat is still okay for Spellslinger because damage from Frost Splinters scales with it, but for Frostfire such a significant fraction of your damage does not interact with Mastery at all. This has resulted in Frost Mages being completely not interested in getting a The Jastor Diamond, which was one of the unique and interesting items of this season.

Mage Damage Niches: A clearer reason to pick Frost over Arcane or Fire in some situations needs to exist. Mage specializations mainly compete with each other in raids, so even if Frost is theoretically strong it typically won't see much play when Arcane and Fire have clear strengths. Historically, Frost's strength was mainly its damage against two stacked targets with Splitting Ice, but right now you don't see a lot of sustained two-target cleave in Raids or Mythic+, and even when you do Frost Mage hasn't felt particularly strong.

Talent Diversity: Right now, most choices in the Frost talent tree are very locked in and the talents with a focus on Frostbolt are not the most compelling. Having a few more options would be a nice improvement to see.

That was really the one change that turned me off from playing frost, and switching classes altogether. Playing spellslinger with freezing winds felt great. Literally slinging spells. And then they changed it, removed the fof procs off the ability, and made the entire hero talent spec feel bad.

It pushed players into a feelsbad rotation for frostfire, and nothing has been done to fix it.

Nerfs and buffs aside, some major changes need to happen. I spent 6 years mythic raiding as a frost mage, and one talent change made me swap classes. I was pretty bummed by Spellslinger visuals , its like playing frost and you literally see nothing but more icicles which in my opinion was a bit of a turn off at the start of the expansion.

In many ways it feels great to play the way it currently plays, due to having steady dps and low falloff if executed well with good uptime, absolutely being able to blast. but when taken fight diversity in mind, that playstyle brakes really quick in different scenarios which might include heavy and consistent movement, prolonged fights with massively different phases, fight where cds just dont alight well at all `Rik-reverb` and how frost has become somewhat of a melee spec with its Aoe burst rotation, which isn't always great(raid scenarios). furthermore it seems like frost doesn't actually benefit that heavily from Time Warp/Bloodlust, as in doesn't spike our damage massively during it, for example when cast late in fights. Dont get me wrong, in m+ with big pulls and well timed cds, good execution and teamplay it can do really well. but to me the best explanation to what hast actually does to frost, is help its playstyle feel good, flow well, and not actually boost its damage to any meaningful extent, like say fire and combustion, or many of the other specs that have damage amplifying "ults". If there was more hast baked directly into the spec to make it flow well, so secondary's could be spent in other stats like mastery (i know it already has lots of hast, but what about spells native cast time for example). Or, if mastery was somewhat reworked to actually matter(idea: mastery gives Icy veins a damage multiplier). And when cast, big hast cds like Power infusion, Bloodlust/Time Warp and Icy-veins contributed well to boost momentary damage. That could be one way to alter the specialization to fit better into dynamic fights.

Something quite different, that could work, but again will be really different from the somewhat punishing flat profile we have had for agesComment by AnivatusI've been playing Frost Mage since late Mists of Pandaria, and it’s remained my favorite spec ever since. It’s been my main throughout. Currently, I especially love the synergy and visual flair of Frostfire-style gameplay.

Comment by Cross1776The loss of freezing winds, and ice lances exploding, has made the aoe rotation really clunky where you have to decide which single target spells to rotate through while you wait for aoe cooldowns. And the tier set bonus basically does not exist as it falls off as soon as it procs. I don't think you could design it worse. And lastly, mastery went from the best stat to by far the worst. It is insane that a stat can be so much worse than other stats. Plus you have a soft cap on crit so that will soon be bad too.Comment by CorpselanceI just want to be able to choose between having a very powerful Blizzard spell, OR a very powerful Frozen Orb, OR a very powerful Comet Storm. Why do I need to have all three at once and each of them deals mediocre damage unless the target count is very high or stacked perfectly? Does it make one a more skilled player to use them in a specific order? They don't even really buff each other, save through the odd talent interaction - which just so happens to buff Blizzard (Freezing Rain) or make your Frozen Orb come back faster (Ice Caller).

All I'm saying is - what if I had Blizzard, and then beneath it, there was a choice node that says "Your Blizzard is now Frozen Orb and shares all damage increases with Blizzard." or "Your Blizzard is now Comet Storm and shares all damage increases with Blizzard." And then, stemming from those talents, you'd have something that says, "When you cast your Frozen Orb/Comet Storm, a Blizzard is also called at the same location for free." Or, "When you cast Blizzard, a Frozen Orb/Comet Storm is also summoned at the location, dealing damage that scales with Blizzard's damage." Ba-da-bing, you've got flavor, an easier rotation, and easier class balancing!Comment by SeniaaI still don't get why they haven't just brought forward the one legendary that made Ice Lance explode during orb. Would solve a lot of their AoE issues.

Frost is also just stuck being just worse at AoE than Fire and worse at funnel than Arcane and has no upside to either. Turning Icy Veins into an actual 2 minute CD didn't help matters either since you now have the largest gap in CDs of the 3 specs when you were the shortest and have nothing to show for it. They removed the CDR to stop getting punished for uptime loss...but you STILL are punished for uptime and Fire has the literal exact same "problem" anyway.

It also got shafted the hardest defensively in DF where its better ice block became baseline while Fire keeps Caut and Arcane keeps its better barrier.Comment by MirrorredCouple things:

1. A possible DPS niche that's not discussed here is very short-window burst AoE with the Comet Storm -> Coldest Snap -> Comet Storm combo. This is quite positioning dependent and often hard to pull off but it's nice when it works. Could be strengthened by making Comet Storm move with your target, or have a larger area of effect.
2. I disagree that Frost has trouble with long continuous movements. If you use Ice Floes with a Glacial Spike, then follow with Flurry and 2 Ice Lances, you get a very large window of pure movement. Long enough for most raid mechanics, even long movements. This has been even more improved with the change to make Fingers of Frost and Winter's Chill separate, too, because you often get another 1 or 2 Ice Lances to add on the end.
3. I do feel like Frost's DPS niche *should* be two-target cleave. It feels bad that many other classes do this just as well, if not better, these days. An idea to give Frost's two-target cleave a decent bump would be to make it so Glacial Spike and Ice Lance always crit on the cleaved target if they crit on the main target. You might argue that this would take away some of the depth of Frost's mechanics, or make Winter's Chill be confusing in how it works (since it would be effecting the damage done to mobs it wasn't debuffing), but I feel FoF Ice Lances and WC Ice Lances working with different damage mechanics in cleave is just mechanical cruft we could get rid of.
4. Early Season 1 Spellslinger Frost was probably the worst mage rotation I've ever played (completely unintelligible without a complex WeakAura and highly dependent on twitch reaction and spell travel time even with it), but late Season 1 Spellslinger Frost was one of my favorites. Fishing for Frozen Orb procs and doing mostly instant-cast filler in between was fun, imo. Spec skill transitioned significantly into placing Frozen Orbs correctly in relation to boss/mob movements, which synergized well with the high mobility. I was sad when they nerfed it into the ground.
5. Agreed that Frost in M+ is still pretty annoying because it's all static-placed AoE spells and that feels terrible with pug tanks whose movement you can't predict, but the larger radius of Blizzard that was implemented in Season 2 has helped a LOT with this. I was surprised by how much. It's made me think, again, that increasing the radius of Comet Storm or making it move with your targeted mob would be a huge QoL improvement for Frost.
6. I've said this for years and years but I wish they'd bring back Deep Freeze as a high-damage, instant-cast, instant-travel spell that only works against stun-immune mobs. It'd fill a role in Frost's damage profile that we've lacked forever - free, simple, cooldown-based damage that doesn't require resource generation or casting uptime. Frost's reputation as a spec that requires high uptime was mostly established because of Icy Propulsion, and that mechanic has been nerfed a lot and made less relevant, but in the background, another reason for the uptime dependency was that we have so little of this type of damage; damage that regenerates while you're not doing anything! Currently I am playing fire in raid, arcane in m+ and frost in PvP (potent but i suck at it).
So there ist content i am engaging with each spec and I find it amazing.

To not sidetrack the discussion: I also enjoyed frost in raid last season as there were many occasions coldest snap was useful to gain short and big burst windows. Single target was a little offputting due to frozen orb rng especially with encounters that moved a lot (third of nerub palace).

It is unfortunate that frost does not fill a niche in the raid and I would like it to do so. Since I am only playing this class since this xpac, I dont feel strongly about it as I am enjoying every mage spec throughout TWW.Comment by FredsizkFrost Mage used to be the fun seamless spec out of the 3 in shadowlands, now its just a over-complicated mess just as the other 2 mage specs, forcing a 1 button rotation assitant down our throats. Freezing wind change was bad.

Death's chill feels clunky at best. All spells should stack it, not just crap bolt.

Lance and glacial spike should auto crit secondary target if crit on primary target.

Loss of glacial spike explosion (df s3/4 2p) makes the spec feel worse.

Half the talent tree is frost bolt related, but we hardly ever press it.

Bring back extra time warp!

Wild the class got a rework not long ago putting it in a great spot... only to mindlessly over proc the spec with no clear direction the next expansion.Comment by GraboLiterally NO ONE was playing spellslinger on top parses - you could check all 8 bosses for all top 100 spots and not a single player wasn't FF. I don't know if there is any other spec in the game that is THIS one-sided.

I hate comet storm - I hate ray of frost - I hate bosses with significant movement that make you conscious of when to cast comet storm - cone of cold sucks ass sometimes since despite you facing 3 mobs, one of them randomly won't clip since it's like 4 degrees to the left of your cone(Barrels on Rik Reverb, basically unplayable). Give cone of cold like 2 yard longer range forward and it'll be more playable on more fights.

The more I play it, the better and better I get at the spec(99 avg in heroic, 94 avg in mythic), and the more and more hollow it feels. Cold front sucks because of boss movement and because you barely frost bolt/flurry. Splintering ray is pointless because you can't shatter in raid. Deep shatter is a pointless talent. Slick ice may as well not exist because of the glacial spike meta.

Comment by KuniZyrekaiAs one of the last Frost Slinger players, I have to agree in general. Our gameplay is fine, the SFT reset feels good, and the hero tree is about as much as I'd really want out of it. The one thing that bugs me is that Frozen Orb's size vs how important it is to the spec means that both the natural movement of the orb through mobs, and required tank movement for many of the larger AoE packs (looking at you Priory consecrates) means that we're getting screwed on our damage, where Frostfire's is up front as long as you get a couple of seconds to drop Meteor. There is absolutely no reason we should not get the orb tracking mechanic that Priest got. I'm sorry, aiming Orb and reading your tank's mind is not a skill shot that should exist in this game. We've fought this dumb spell's movement for 13 years, only for you to give it to another class entirely.

Frostfire feels like slop by comparison. There should never be a case to Flurry into WC, but here we are. You added procs to spells that were already procs, and made them overshadow their originals. Also, Blazing Barrier is one of the ugliest spell effects in this game, by a very wide margin. Give us the nicer animations you made ages ago and got utilized extensively in Remix as glyphs if not as the defaults.

We have no niche. We're not a burst spec, although they keep trying to make us one but are scared of it. We're functionally middling at everything, which I guess is a niche itself? We don't really sacrifice anything to take AoE, but it does mean that the talent tree is functionally irrelevant.

I would like to see Ray of Frost being worth taking on Slinger, and I would kill for our talent tree to get a good looking at. Glacial Spike is great, but why did we not get the DF S3 AoE burst on it? Ray of Frost needs some work on feeling impactful (and being useful at all to Slinger) but it has TWO supporting talents in the most crowded sector of the tree, one is required for the spell to do any damage worth talking about and one is a bad joke, although a GREAT idea.

Defensively, we're fine if boring. Cold Snap is drastically inferior to what the other specs bring to the table. I would like to see it reworked into Time Spiral's mechanics, for at least Barrier and Block, where it adds a temporary charge when needed, rather than potentially wasting most of your cooldown up until then. But that's still inferior. Fire's get out of jail free card and Arcane's frankly absurd defensive boost on Prismatic Barrier laugh at "you get Ice Block/Ice Cold a second time, but not too often because we kept Hypothermia in the game" that Frost gets. Ice Barrier being a small amount higher absorb than the other two does not keep up with this disparity. You could easily bring back Shield of Alodi's buff, or a physical DR, or something to meet that gap.Comment by Ttazi92double the range of cone of cold pleaseComment by ArcaneVertigoGood analysis and I agree that the proc munching is an issue, especially because frost (mage in general) is relatively fast-paced and you can't just sit on some of them without a dps loss. In terms of single target, Ray of Frost just feels both dull and awkward to use. I think establishing the niche is the most challenging part because a lot of that will come down to fight design, so it will be important to consider to some extent how the spec performs outside that niche and whether the hero specialisations could play a role in that way.

There is absolutely no reason we should not get the orb tracking mechanic that Priest got. I'm sorry, aiming Orb and reading your tank's mind is not a skill shot that should exist in this game. We've fought this dumb spell's movement for 13 years, only for you to give it to another class entirely.
