In the 8th Season of Diablo 4, Belial, The Lord of Lies, has returned to Sanctuary once more. His duplicitous magics will require the keen eye of Sayeena, a retired Vizjerei mage and expert in demonic magic. But who exactly are the Vizjerei, and why are they looked upon with suspicion by people of Sanctuary? In this lore deep dive, we uncover the horrific history of the Vizjerei Mage Clan and how their actions forever darkened our doorstep with fear, hatred, and destruction.
The Rise of the Mage Clans
Long ago, the people of Kehjan began rigorous studies of magic, codifying its forms into unique schools, which gave rise to many mage clans. The three most powerful were the Ammuit, the Ennead, and the Vizjerei.
The Vizjerei specialized in understanding the esoteric and the occult, and it was a Vizjerei mage, Jere Harash, intent on summoning the spirits of his brutally massacred family, who unintentionally summoned the first Demon to Sanctuary—Kabraxis. It was from Kabraxis that Mephisto first learned of Sanctuary, leading to cataclysmic conflict with the renegade Angel, Inarius: the great and terrible Sin War.

The Mage Clan Wars
In the aftermath of the Sin War, the Ennead and the Ammuit banned all practices involving the summoning of Demons. Meanwhile, with their memories wiped by the Angels and believing the devastation to be the result of
religious
conflict, the population flocked to the mage clans, swelling their numbers. The subsequent centuries came to be known as the "Age of Magic."
The Vizjerei grew in popularity and power. Despite being under the watchful eye of the Ennead and Ammuit clans, they could not resist their temptations forever. In -264, the Vizjerei were discovered summoning Demons within Yshari Sanctum. Assassinations of prominent Vizjerei and retaliatory assassinations against the Ennead and Ammuit were the beginning of a long shadow war that finally erupted across Kehjistan. The Mage Clan Wars had begun.
The combined numbers and magics of the Ennead and Ammuit put a strain on the Vizjerei. As their forces were pushed back, some within the Vizjerei began experimenting with demonic possession to bolster their ranks. Finally, pushed to their limits and exhausted, the Vizjerei began summoning Demons in droves, amassing a small army of Hell, which carved through the ranks of the Ennead and Ammuit, pushing their forces back to Viz-jun.
The Ballad of Bartuc the Bloody
Two powerful Vizjerei mages, the brothers Horazon and Bartuc, began to have dissenting opinions about the Demons. While Horazon reveled in breaking the wills of Demons, Bartuc began to foster a fondness for his demonic allies. His penchant for carnage was stoked by the influence of Hell, and he become known as "The Warlord of Blood.”
Realizing that he had gone too far, the Vizjerei council and his brother Horazon acted to remove Bartuc from command of his forces. Bartuc, suffused with demonic energies and frenzied by his passion for destruction, turned the demonic host against the Vizjerei. Thousands of the Vizjerei were slain in a catastrophic battle, which ultimately destroyed the entirety of Viz-jun.
The End of an Age and the Legacy of the Vizjerei
The Vizjerei, realizing the terror unleashed into the world by their actions, vowed never to use demonic magic again. To ensure no one would ever fall to the temptation of demonic magic, they formed a secret order of mage slayers called the Viz-Jaq'taar, who came to be known as the Assassins.
Despite centuries of hard work to redeem themselves in the eyes of the people (including the brave acts of Jazreth the sorcerer in the story of Diablo I and Li-Ming the Wizard in Diablo III), the remaining Vizjerei are still viewed with suspicion. They will likely never escape the terrible legacy of their forebears.
"One must always strive towards the path of redemption
with singular purpose in mind, for temptation and the
disquieted mind wavers wills with certainty."
