Addicts, clinging on old nostalgia...
I think retail saw it's last true glory when Legion released. The game was bad before then (Draenor) so the team came together one last time and delivered an amazing expansion. Since then it's really been a downhill battle, and it's pretty clear now that the ones calling the shots are the finance people while the devs just do what they are told, with no vision at all for the game and an unhealthy emphasis on monetization. Just think about all the crap cosmetics they released on almost a weekly schedule with the excuse of the anniversary, literally thousands of Dollars/Euro for mount reskins, meanwhile the game has been on a rinse/repeat cycle every patch since 2016 without any true innovation besides tweaks to the formula here and there. Personally I think the only reason WoW is still going strong to this day is the lack of proper competition in the genre rather than any merits on their part.

The reason wow stays popular is because people who “quit” always make it their thing to comment on the state of the game. That will drive popularity everytime.
:))) i guess i'm an addict too since i play everyday this crap...Can't wait to get home from work to mimic some nfs carbon drifting style with the new drive system.Yet, the game is not fun, caters to world first players and tune the content around them.. mythic being hard af
it's one of the wonders of the World that Ion is still lead designer after BfA + Shadowlands + giving greenlight to Dragonflight S3 raid + botching the promising War Within.
love how he says " we get feedback " but not " we listen to feedback " because we know they dont
