Unions Call for Strike in Response to Activision Blizzard Closing Office in Versailles

A week ago, we learned of Activision Blizzard's move to
close their Versailles office
in France. Today, as
shared by Taliesin & Evitel
, the elected unions
CGT
,
SPECIS-UNSA
, and
CFE-CGC
are calling for employees to go on strike, citing previous denials of closure plans and the uncertain times due the Covid crisis.
As stated, previous attempts to downsize the office have been met with significant resistance, though remained incomplete victories, as deteriorating work conditions and rising
psycho-social risk factors
(defined as risk factors which affect psychological response to work conditions, such as high workloads, strict demands, and lack of control over working methods) have led the Social and Economic Committee (CSE) to issue a
droit d'alerte
regarding the mental health of employees as a result of the declining situation. As a result of these and other grievances, they collective unions have issued three demands:
The cancellation of the Versailles office closure.
Further development of activities in Europe.
Investment in efficient prevention of PSR (psycho-social risks)
While few details regarding the office closure were given,
Bloomberg
reported that the company originally planned to relocate half of the office to London, though that plan was interrupted by Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic, eventually resulting in the decision to close the office entirely. While some employees have undoubtedly moved to other offices, this past year also saw the closure of a Blizzard office in The Hague and eliminated 134 of 400 positions in Versailles as Activision Blizzard negotiated with the French government over legally mandated mass layoff compensation packages. The result of this call to strike remain to be seen, though with so many previous attempts to downsize and close the office, any victory in the matter may be only a temporary measure.
