24 Things You Forgot About Vanilla and Classic - Video by Method Leyst

Except for the dungeon finder, I actually remember most of those things.
Ah, the village next to Shadowfang. I always found it fascinating. Took me some time to figure out that I should quest there throughout the day, because the NPCs were elite at night xD(##RESPBREAK##)268##DELIM##Buuloki##DELIM## Off-topic part was removed

Needing ammo was great? Graveyard runs and re-clearing respawning trash felt pretty great? Pardon my French but what the actual frick? I have not heard one hunter, one hunter from any guild I've been since Cataclysm say "Boy, I sure do miss ammo! It was such a nice, flavorful thing!". No, the people who say that did not play that class, same goes for warlocks and soulshards, mages and feathers, druids and acorns, etc. Did it feel more like an RPG back then? Yes, there's no denying that. Has the game changed and evolved into something more than just an RPG? Also yes.

I will admit one thing though - being the all powerful and mighty vanquisher of the Burning Legion and the liberator of Draenor feels kind of, well, weird. We could have been a part of the movement and we could have been one of many garrisons, as well as one of many paladins / death knights, etc. How? The weapons themselves become a symbol of hope and we try to replicate them instead of us being the sole wielder of the all powerful Ashbringer, Apocalypse or Xal'atath. Hell, just make it so that all of the class halls hired the finest blacksmiths in existence to try and replicate the most powerful weapons known to man! Sadly, we gotta get on that "I am a god" train that many MMOs are on.

I am not saying nobody enjoyed it as I am sure I will get replies saying "But I played a hunter and the ammo system was the !@#$! So was pet happiness!" or "Are you crazy? Paladins having to cast a Seal and use Judgment which consumes the seal was so innovative and fun!", etc. Did I enjoy the game back then? No, I was too young and too poor :(, however, did I enjoy TBC? Why yes, I did. In fact, I loved TBC back in the day, however, looking back at it, even it wasn't the best thing to come out of WoW, at least to me. Wrath and MoP is where it's at, both for different reasons.

Now, am I personally affected by this? Of course not! I am, however, stating my opinion (and, well, it is a bit controversial, I guess). I do agree that the game needs to go back towards it's RPG roots a bit more, however, just bringing back ammo or acorns isn't what I have in mind. In my opinion, our characters have to be humbled and I mean really, really humbled. Since we can't really rewrite Legion or Draenor, the next best thing is making it so that our characters go from the sole saviors of the universe to, well, one of the many saviors of the universe. Yeah, we can get up in ranks, however, being the leaders of all warlocks? Of all paladins? Preposterous.

Sorry for the tangent, I have had this on my mind for the past few years and I have finally vented a bit. I was planning on doing a huge post regarding this separately, however, real life can be a bih and can take a toll on you.

P.S. - To everyone who enjoys these things in the video, good for you! In that case, Classic will truly be wonderful for you and I, honest to Yogg'Saron, hope you enjoy the game and that it rekindles the fire deep inside of you! My comment was in no way trying to bash Classic, hell, it turned into me venting about lore and how Blizzard scuffed it :D No, my comment is targeted at the idea that anything Classic was 100% "pretty great", as stated in the video.

I played a hunter a lot back when ammo was a thing. Ammo wasn't great to have to deal with, but I did like the flavor of it. Running out of ammo sucked, and having to dedicate a large portion of your bags sucked, so you were careful about it, but at the time I thought it made me feel more like a hunter. It definitely added flavor. But that was back in the days when WoW was more like the RPGs of yore, before they decided that the tedious, "realistic" management aspects weren't the kind of gameplay they wanted.

I'm not saying I want ammo back, and Classic isn't really my thing either, but there is at least one old-school hunter who thought ammo was a nice, flavorful thing. :)

I don't usually watch 13 minute vids, but I really enjoyed this one. Well done.

I also mained a hunter back in the day. There was no actual flavor because there was no customization. Every hunter of a particular level was using the same ammo. The only difference was bullets or arrows. Flavor would have been if there were ways to modify the damage type of your arrows for specific content, frost, fire, nature, etc. The Vanilla system would be about as fair as forcing other casters to have to return to a vendor to buy more mana. It was just a pain in the neck.

Mana, You mean like what Hunter's use to use back in the day.

I'd have to agree and didn't even play Classic. Retail has current ammo-adjusting stuff (I can add frost damage) without making you hog up your bags with stacks and stacks of generic arrows.

Thanks for reminding me how much worse Vanilla was than today. I get it, the feeling of getting things and leveling up, your first mount, first epic. That's all fun and dandy if you're a new player, but lets face it, people who have been playing 15 years are not going to feel rewarded, they not going to feel the sense of doing something today like they did back then. It's like your first love, you will never have that feeling again and certainly not 10-15 years later. I have become spoiled on the game now and going back to way things were, to me it seems like a frustrating waste of time.

There was also a Neutral AH in Gadgetzan, not only Booty Bay.

Also in Everlook, Winterspring. Booty Bay was the one that got mostly used, though. Partly due to location, and partly due to the pages of Green Hills of Stranglethorn.

Also: the neutral auction houses cut a larger share of the successful trade than your faction's ones. That's goblins for you!

Ya. At least one of our critical DPS resources would regen on its own. You run out of ammo you better start hoofing it back to town.

Before WoW Vanilla I played Asheron's Call and AC2. There were quite a few systems in that game I would love to see adapted to WoW. On the subject of ammo; you had to buy or craft your own arrow shafts and arrowheads. You could then add potions or poisons on top of those to create your own custom ammo. That was flavor. You had three modifiers for your rounds on top of whatever your actual bow applied. For example; shafts that increase attack speed, arrowheads that penetrate armor, and poison that slows movement speed of the target. And not only did this customization modify the combat effects, but it also modified the visual particle effects.

It feels more like a true MMO to have to think to take enough shards or ammo or materials to go to dungeon or raid.

In vanilla, bags are very little and shards, ammo etc have a dedicated bag, so you can only have 3 bags, a bagpack and a dedicated bag.
More, you don't have many mounts or pets, because each one cost gold and especially 1 bag slot, and you need all slots of your bags to farm and keep stuff until you can place it in bank.

You can only walk/run till lvl 20, then buy riding and slow mounts till lvl 40, and only at lvl 40 you can have expert riding and fast epic mounts that costs a lot of gold. (It can take months to have enough gold to buy it.) only paladins and warlock can have an epic mount with quest, but these quests required very expensive materials and epic dungeon parts.

You must buy all ranks of all of your skills, and respezialisation can cost a lot of gold cause it increases each time you do it.

Alliance cannot do shamans and horde cannot do paladins.

In Vanilla, it was 40 and 60. Level 20 mounts came later.

Wrong. 60% mount at level 40, epic mount at level 60. Though theoretically it was possible to have an epic mount at level 49 and PvP rank 11.

Nice vid, i can agree that i forgot about the "dungeon finder" back in the day. I just don't know if i would even call it a dungeon finder compared to todays retail version.

I've seen it in other topics and here as well; time messes with us when it comes to a discussion about vanilla vr. classic. One should differ between vanilla (2004-2007) and classic (2019).

Back in the day when i played vanilla i wasn't complaining about ammo simply because i didn't new something else. It was the way it was. Same goes for graveyard running or so much more stuff. Killing 30 mobs to get 8 pieces of X? Ok then...

Since we can't erase our minds (at least without major consequences :-) ) Playing classic won't be the same experience as playing vanilla simply because of the 15 Years in between. So when i played the first two stresstests i was rudely reminded of the fact that i have to run the hole Map back to my corpse. On the other hand i was delighted how much lost memories surfaced while playing. Even a fact like " Right, don't you dare pulling more then one or two at a time because dying is a common thing :-)"

It's one thing to compare vanilla and retail but another topic how the experience is going to be when classic starts in August and if it will last or not due to the things one know now.
