The forsaken needs a new direction like wow needs to be fresh from time to time.

The Forsaken saw her, while she was alive and fighting for them despite their damned appearance, and KNELT! Sylvanas saw the one true remaining heir to the crown and immediately killed her. The Light resurrected her (Which will come with it's own complications later down the road), and so now she too is undead.

Should Calia Menethil take charge of the Forsaken?

She actually passed on that offer and instead Lilian Voss has been taking that seat on the council.

But would it make sense for Calia to lead the Lordaeron Undead?

100% it would.

Also, if there is a 100 year gap in history and you fill that with lore, it's not a retcon. It's information you were unaware of.
