Jason Schreier has reported
that Overwatch 2 Executive Producer Chacko Sonny will be leaving Blizzard Entertainment this Friday. The five year production director and executive producer announced his departure in an email to staff, saying that working at Blizzard “has been an absolute privilege and one of the best experiences of my career.” A Blizzard spokesman confirmed his departure, stating that the company hasn’t yet decided who take over his role within the Overwatch franchise.
Blizzard co-leaders Jen Oneal and Mike Ybarra described Chacko Sonny as “a thoughtful leader,” and said they were grateful for his service.
Chacko Sonny began his video game development career at Activision, working on MechWarrior in 1995, before going on to co-found his own studio, Savage Entertainment. In 2010, he went back to Activision, serving as studio head at Beachhead Studio, which built the Call of Duty ELITE online service for Black Ops, Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops 2. He then became the director of product development for Sony Santa Monica Studio, managing a
diverse portfolio of games
, including the development of God of War: Ascension. Finally, he joined Blizzard Entertainment in 2016, as production director and later executive producer and vice president for the Overwatch franchise. In his five years at Blizzard, and most notably the
five months since Game Director Jeff Kaplan left the studio
, Sonny was described as a stabilizing force on the Overwatch team.
Overwatch 2 is currently in the final stages of production, and although there is no release date, Game Director Aaron Keller announced that special updates would be shared during special pre-show and half-time events during the Overwatch League Grand Finals on September 25th - coincidentally the same day as Sonny's last at Blizzard Entertainment.
