In the Boscombe Valley Mystery and the Adventure of Silver Blaze he is respectively described as wearing a "close-fitting cloth cap" and a "ear-flapped travelling cap".The illustrations of Sherlock wearing this cap done by Sidney Paget were these two stories and as they took place in the country side a deerstalker cap is what Sherlock, a very fashion conscious man, would have worn. It's only in matter illustrations and stories that he would be depicted wearing this hat even in cities, a crime against Victorian fashion trends.
