Like all good folk tales, some of the stories in
Folk & Fairy Tales of Azeroth
use beautiful stories to explain mundane things like the world's planetary motions. One thing that sets Azeroth apart from our own world is that it has two moons - "The White Lady", the larger, silver moon that resembles our own and is associated with Elune, and a smaller, blue-green moon known as "The Blue Child". This mysterious, traveling moon has an interesting history.
Folk & Fairy Tales of Azeroth is a collection of short stories set in Azeroth. What makes these stories unique is they are not just stories we are being told about the world - they're the stories that the people of the world tell each other. It's important to note that, while some of these stories are rooted in canon, they are still fables that should be taken with a pinch of salt.
The Blue Child in Folks & Fairy Tales
The first story we'd like to talk about is
The Embrace
. In this story, the Blue Child is daughter of the White Lady - Azeroth's main moon. Charged with keeping watch over Azeroth, the White Lady grows lonely as she realizes she had no one to love who would love her back. Happily, one day her love gives birth to a child of her own, a daughter named the Blue Child.
Though the White Lady is overjoyed by this miracle, she eventually has to learn the lesson all mothers do - that children grow, and become people of their own. It was the birth of the Blue Child that made the White Lady happy, but the Blue Child begins to wonder what would make
her
happy. Eventually, the Blue Child leaves the White Lady to go on a journey without warning. The White Lady is heartbroken, and in her pain causes a great deal of meteorological damage to Azeroth in the years that follow, though she stops when she realizes she is hurting the mortal mothers and their own children on Azeroth.
Eventually, the Blue Child returns home to her mother. She had been traveling the universe, and tells the White Lady excitedly of distant stars, dancing with other moons and suns, and visiting other worlds. The Lady realizes that her daughter is filled with wonder and curiosity, and is no longer sad when her Blue Child leaves her, but is rather filled with pride and awe at her daughter's bravery.
A second story that we want to mention is
Eyes of the Earth Mother
, a Tauren folk tale about the Earth Mother and her two children, An'she - the Sun, and Mu'sha - the Moon. At first, to keep her children safe, the Earth Mother places one in each of her eyes - which is why they are also seen in Tauren mythology as her left eye and her right eye. The Tauren themselves are named shu'halo, and the Earth Mother cares for them and raises her children to do the same. But despite everything, the Tauren are tainted by shadow. When the Earth Mother herself becomes touched by darkness from deep within the earth - presumably the Old Gods - she weeps a single tear, as she realizes she is no longer a safe haven for her children.
Later, some still uncorrupted Tauren discover a baby in the woods, which they bring to Mu'sha and An'she. The two recognize the child as their kin, born of the Earth Mother's tear, and resolve to bring them to her to be named. However, they are attacked by the shadow - and An'she is wounded badly. The Earth Mother gives the babe the name "Lo'sho" and charges her two other children to keep them safe from corruption - while she sacrifices herself for her children and for the Tauren by dedicating the rest of her existence to holding back the darkness.
Here she rooted herself. Here she would make her stand. Here she would hold the shadows fast. Here she gave all of herself for her creations, never to rise and walk the land again, all to make the world safe for them.
While this child is never named in the common tongue, it would make sense for it to be the Blue Child.
The Blue Child in World of Warcraft
Unlike the White Lady - which is significant for its association with Mu'sha and Elune, the Blue Child has not played a major role in World of Warcraft's lore. However, the fact that the Blue Child can disappear from the heavens for years at a time is something we've experienced in-game.
This small, second moon was present and visible during Vanilla World of Warcraft, but at the launch of
Burning Crusade
, the Blue Child disappeared from Azeroth's sky - supposedly due to a bug with the skybox. According to
Engadget, it was briefly visible
during questline to obtain
Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
. However, it wouldn't return fully to the skies of Azeroth again until
Mists of Pandaria
.
We can't help but speculate over the idea that the Blue Child is said to "visit other worlds", and also the hint that it's untouched by the Old Gods. Perhaps this uncorrupted, yet seemingly insignificant traveler still has a major role to play.
Or perhaps the stories are just a reminder of some of the changes to the game that happened in
Burning Crusade
, just in time for
Burning Crusade Classic
.

Like when Everquest sent us to Luclin and we discovered cat people
I remember those days, fondly. That was such a great game....in the beginning.

In what universe does the winter queen being one of Azeroths moon make sense. They’re both blue. That’s the extent of their similarities. WQ isn’t chilling in the skies above Azeroth, she’s in ardenweald dealing with people from all planets. Seriously dense
Not as farfetched as one would imagine. The white lady Isn't Elune exactly but the Elves still venerate the moon as a symbol of Elune, her power even manifested itself through it when Ysera died or when Tyrande became the night Warrior. The Winter queen being Elune's sister could have some sort of parallel with the Blue and White Lady.
Elune isn't "chilling" above Azeroth either, but that doesn't mean the moon can't be an aspect of her power across the cosmos. Even if the blue lady isn’t anywhere related to the Winter Queen, it is not "dense" to draw such a parallel.
I dont think The White Lady really is The Blue Childs birth mother (thats the Earth Mother), They are siblings but The Blue Child was newborn when The Earth Mother sacrified herself and it makes sense that it dont remember this. So it sees The White Lady as its mother. The White Lady and The Sun/An'she were tasked in taking care of, protecting and teach their younger sibling Lo'Sho. Im pretty confident thats the case and that The White Lady/Mu'sha is Elune and The Blue Child/Lo'Sho is The Winter Queen. Or atleast like said here that the moon is part over their power to continue to watch over the mortal world while doing other stuff.
It also makes sense that stories like this will vary between races and change over time. So elements from multiple stories can be correct/inncorrect and need to be viewed and put together to get the full picture.

So I guess that's where
Lady and the Child
comes from... ^.^U
yep they are twins/sisters even tho the blue one sees the white one as a mom its her older sister. Azeroth is the mom of elune and winter queen (winter queen may be unaware but ingame she is aware that Elune is her sister even tho shes LIKE a mom to her and resents her from disappearing... so do the night elves because she wasn't there for the war of thorns)
Azeroth is an unborn titan at the core of the planet. Their Mom is The Earth Mother and is something older, possibly one of the First Ones. Also The Earth Mother rooted herself somwhere on the surface when she sent her childs away. Might be under Hyjal/Moonglade or some other place with alot of life energy.
