Liveblog of the Shadowlands Torghast and The Maw Interview with Paul Kubit and Towelliee

so we've got all the details!Watch Interview With Paul Kubit on Torghast & The Maw from Towelliee on www.twitch.tvHighlights

Keys for Torghast can technically be infinitely farmed, but you'll need to do more than just Torghast to get it.

You'll be able to enter Torghast shortly after you hit 60.

Probably not a lot of equippable gear that has an item level in Torghast. It's mostly for Legendaries and Freed Souls.

Torghast has tech to scale mobs by role and even by spec, but with Anima Powers, they're not sure if it's needed.

A soft-timer per floor might be added so that people don't feel incentivized to only pull with cooldowns up.

Torghast will stick around for the expansion with new floors, legendaries, themes and ecologies.

You might see some important souls in Torghast as that's where the Jailer keeps his most prized souls.

The Maw is an end-game zone where you'll have to prioritize what you want to do as you're timed due to the Eye of the Jailer debuff.

Uhg keys to enter, well that sort a kills my interest.
Like if I could get all my key currency in one sitting for the week(s) by it being cumulative I wouldn't mind as much, but meh if forced to log into every few days especially if trying to keep multiple characters up to date.

He did purpose different options.... Having a currency to enter is not the problem but how tedious it is to get the currency. The Mage tower had a currency and people enjoyed it.

Its a bit different in Mage Tower was only up for a short three days at a times every other week, this meant you were basically left with no other option but to do something else which netted you the currency to get in. Even then Mage Tower was potentially a one and done situation. Once you were done with it on a particular character(per spec) there was no benefit to do it again on that character.

Torghast is meant to be an expansion long activity, you are meant to play it multiple times for continued benefit. So there is no real downtime except for running out of currency, which then forces you to go do other things to get that currency.

So as you said if getting the currency is easy enough and the cost to enter isnt too high then its mostly fine but the passiveness of getting currency is vastly different between Mage Tower and Torghast, from what we know at the moment anyway.

Ideally you should be able to get the currency inside the tower(alongside outside sources) so if you play well enough you can play as many times as you like without pause.

That's exactly what they are trying to avoid, that you only play one type of content. So i very much doubt they're going to put in any kind of sustainable way of doing that.

Drought of Souls you say?...
(Legion bis trinket for most classes ;) )

So the big thing I've seen here is that they didn't want to put in the work to do procedural generation and instead are just doing preset things again. There goes a lot of my hope for Torghast. I like the rest of the systems but specifically I was hoping they would keep their Blizzcon choice of it being done procedurally so it's fresh each time.

Comment by Incandio

Why not just call it Diablolands? How long before they add Treasure Goblins to Torghast?

As a guy that likes playing tanks and healers this sounds awful if not implemented correctly, but like he said everything is early early alpha so I hope they make it work.

dont get me wrong, im hyped and torghast sounds soooo good
but i feel thay they are soooo behind, they will have to force developing the xpac before end of 2020 and ikd, im worried.

The more I read about Torghast, the less I'm interested in the whole expansion.

M+ can be done single focused, Raids can be single focused, PvP can be done single focused. I see no real reason to not include Torghast. Dont build a fun thing to do if you dont want people to play with it as much as they want, this isnt a mobile game (yet).

Comment by Ralph2449

Blizzard needs to rethink gearing, they themselves admitted that possibly many people might enjoy torghast a lot more, yet be forced to do raids and m+ for gear because gear is everything in wow.

People who progress Torghast need a source of gear or things to upgrade your gear, people won’t be able to enjoy such a game when they are hard capped to a fooor simply because gear is never dropped in Torghast.

Torghast is supposed to be something to do alongside the already established ways to get gear. You won't have people becoming "Torghast only" players because that's not how the system seems to be designed. You'll do Torghast in your free time when you're not raiding or doing M+ or PvP.

I am willing to bet that a fair chunk of the population will enjoy Torghast a lot more than they do the rest of the game, I wouldnt be surprised if Torghast becomes so popular it becomes the main activity for many old and new players, and then people will start pointing out how they are doing challenging solo content yet not rewarded gear wise in order to progress.

And you cant use the "you dont raid mythic so you dont need good gear" excuse anymore, you are gonna need both skill and mythic raid gear to progress the higher levels.

Which means the best way to fix this is a currency that lets you slowly upgrade your gear to mythic ilvl

I don't know, I get the feeling that this system will be more annoying than good for some reason...

as a former software developer, it's refreshing to see Blizzard alpha being a true moniker of what an alpha is. sure it's frustrating there's no solid plan just a lot of ideas to explore but that's the nature of alpha builds

not sure if i like the idea of time gating within the maw zone or how Torghast seems more a side activity you do from time to time but I guess we'll see how it pans out

Comment by JaceDraccus

Yeah, this. It's funny how even in their 4 days old official preview and in one of their recent interviews they still claim that Torghast changes its layout each time you step inside so you have to explore it from scratch.

I'm not sure they ever said it would actually be fully procedurally generated. As far as I recall, they've always said it would be more modular, that there'd be a large number of set pieces that can be fit together in any number of combinations. And that the mobs and objects and other bits and pieces would change from run to run.

Floor 1 won't be the same floor 1 each time, and so on. It might be a floorplan you've seen before, but the contents should be different.

That's pretty much what he's talking about here.

No weapon legendaries.... boooooooring

We’re in the place where arguably the most famous weapon in WoW was forged and we don’t get to forge our own weapons?

The armor you can forge must be amazing. Although I doubt anything will top the Maw Raid sets

Comment by Denzzil

Can someone explain 'legendaries for every slot'? So it's possible to have full legendary set, lol? Why then I should gear through dungeons and raids?

there was a limit im legion, of 1 then extended to 2. Probably Shadowlands will have the same solution

Comment by NatPaggleIsaPOS

This all sounds great but am I the only one who doesnt want legendaries to return? Who the hell enjoyed that system? Its infinitely worse than any system ever. Random random random on top of MORE Random.

Also the worste part of visions atm are the limited attempts in them. Requiring a currency to enter is not fun.

Comment by Grumar

terrible idea to have keys, roguelike systems/games would be annoying and infuriating if getting a bad RNG run could be one of your only few runs of the day/week, that type of gameplay is meant to just be played over and over. Just put a cap on how much legendary dust or what ever you can get in a week.
