Hardcore Characters Lost to DDoS Attack on July 21st Have Been Restored

Posted 2026/07/23 at 5:44 PM by PopularTopular

On July 21, three Classic Hardcore realms in North America were impacted by a malicious DDoS attack, resulting in the deaths of some player-characters.

Today, we’ve restored the dead player-characters who were lost during the DDoS timeframe and remained on their Hardcore realm.

Restorations are now complete. Players who fit the above criteria should be able to log back into their character on the Hardcore realm.

Thank you!

death=revive

Hardcore still being a thing is interesting,or rather the people who choose to play it are i guess.

Everybody wins! That has been Blizzard motto for a while now. Back them with Diablo 3 there was no such thing done even with all the online lag that the game constantly had and players dying because of it.

This is why I will never understand hardcore. I know it can be fun but one internet, power outage or server issue at a bad time and so may hours of progression just gone

You can't revive under normal circumstances.

Hardcore is such a pointless game mode that should be nowhere near Classic.

Its only ever been done for a DDOS as far as I know. This is super rare. Maybe twice before? While I generally think HC means if you're dead you're dead full stop, the one exception that makes sense is DDOS. You don't want the precedent of someone being able to target 100s of players and get away with it. If that happened, it would probably mean many more people would try.

DDOS on an MMORPG is like you dying IRL because the laws of physics stopped for a few seconds.

Hardcore just means you don't get any second chances for your own mistakes.

In a major golf tournament, this DDOS would be like a thunderstorm causing stoppage of play just before the last four players are able to finish the 18th hole, so they just disqualify them and let the current leader be the winner.

I think the benefit to Blizzard is that hardcore mode gives replay value to a certain type of player.

What an ignorant comment - tell that to the thousands of players who enjoy this game mode.

I have, they don't seem to get it either. Game would be better without hardcore.

Been awaiting a reply from PopTop for a while now since his question, there's a whole lotta suspicion going on, this all could have been sorted at the time but so far, he's choosing not to, which makes the suspicions have truth at least.

Hardcore is only funny when someone dies, boring ass content full of gold buyers shilling hundreds on safety pots
