As someone who identifies more as a designer than a player, I loved this video. But I think he's missing a third solution. Why don't Ancient of War and Robo-Cub transform, too? I think that making those buff instead of transform was the real mistake. The overly-complicated-choice card he talks about sounds like a Priest card. I wonder if choose one cards were once not exclusive to Druids?
I'm really not sure where Ben's coming from in this video. He seems to be arguing suggesting that changing the text of to "Choose One - Transform to gain Charge; or +2 Health and Taunt." (mirroring the text on the ) would make the text less easily parsed for new players. I'm sorry, but does "Transform to gain" strike anyone as confusing?Yes, when Hearthstone only had the Basic and Classic cards, there were few enough that people could be expected to know the edge cases and how they all worked. But we're five expansions in, and there are...quite a few cards. Players shouldn't be expected to be able to keep track of all of them and their nuances. is played enough that everyone gets exposed to it very quickly, but that's no excuse for lazy game design.
Bla bla bla.Instead of fixing the text, this guy made a 12 minute video (+ other auxiliary minutes for making the video).Good call.<sarcasm>Adding "Transform to gain " in the text actually costs Blizzard millions of dollars. The best choice is to make a long video.</sarcasm>
Where's Ben Brode on the consistency of cards that are just flat out better than other cards? Frostbolt vs Darkbomb, Fireball vs. Mortal Strike, Entomb vs. Recycle?
I think a few of the old cards could use a bit of change but designers seem to have a problem with doing that, it was a nightmare for paper cards with errata but being purely digital though they could change whatever they saw fit.Certain classes were designed to be better. Warriors arent supposed to be known for direct damage like a mage is. Warriors have weapons, mages dont. I myself have a problem with fireballs overall power as a basic card anyway, you look at flame lance for 5 mana, and fireball at 4 mana almost does the same damage and can be used on the face too. Dragon breath at 5 mana only does 4 damage., regardless that sometimes it's cheaper. They;'re non basics that a both much worse than fireball.Fireball needs to be doing 5 damage for that 4 mana... or cost 5 mana to cast it.. to me it's that simple.
I'd rather it to have the Druid of the Flame text "Choose One - Transform into a 5/2 minion; or a 2/5 minion." because the Druid of the Saber text still implies that it gains buff (+1/+1) instead of setting it to specific value. It should be "Choose One - Transform into 2/1 Charge minion; or a 3/2 Stealth minion.".
