The Silvermoon Guards are a weird example as they were fairly recently updated, yet have only double the models of other guards due to having both genders. They originally only had one (male) appearance due to having a unique model based on WCIII's spellbreaker..
This is the kinda of diversity that we want. Not something shoved down our throats.
Everyone is trying to make it seem deeper than it is but I personally think it's just that it doesn't make sense to limit the new customization to players and let important npcs have better models, It's gonna be nice to not talk to the same face over and over again.
Genuinely wonder how many of the "they should be introduced with quest lines to explain why they are here, not retconned in" people play on RP realms, since they seem to care about the lore so deeply.
Remember: you can’t have multicultural humans because it’s a fantasy game that doesn’t model the real world, and that humans are nearly all white because they’re based off of medieval Eastern Europeans... Meanwhile no one bats an eye that the Titans are literal copies (with minor name changes) of Gods from Greek Mythology.
The guy in marketing that decided to take advantage of the current political climate to sell a few extra units of SL just got his own parking spot.
I'm glad they're taking a 'been here the whole time' approach. To require a questline/story explanation for why diverse humans are present seems like saying POC need to justify their existence. They don't. Not in real life, and not in media. They have, after all, been here the whole time.
Ugh. Imagine your very existence (or someone who looks like you) needing justification, being called "political" and people twisting themselves into knots to talk about how you need to be something "other" - FROM somewhere else, DIFFERENT and abnormal from the other humans. It's not a ret con, the graphics and models in the game were just limited and the updates are letting characters be shown correctly. RemovedHand wringing over "plausible Earth climates" in a game where multiple extreme climates exist right on top of one another in addition to aliens and talking animals and interspecies breeding isn't even thinly veiled. Removed Games and fantasy are for EVERYONE of every race and gender and sexual orientation. Removed Enjoy the new customization options and variety in NPCs.
I genuinely don't understand why people are making a mountain out of a molehill here. It's just some guards and generic NPCs, not Anduin Wrynn getting injected with a metric boatload of melanin. I get that some people really, really care about the lore and levels of consistency but considering the sheer number of shark-jumps (Orcs are aliens, Draenei are another set of aliens from the same planet, Demons and the Burning Legion were pretty much retconned into being alien invaders, Mag'har orcs are aliens from an alternate timeline, Pandaren were expanded from a one-off 'one of the devs loved pandas' hero unit in WC3 to an entire culture and a beloved expansion pack) since the initial Warcraft games of 1 thru 3, this setting people off?Virtue signalling is dumb but this "signal" would barely be on the radar if WoWhead or any other news source related to the game didn't cover it. I'd bet money on that.I really would think that people would just... not pay attention to it. Or be like 'whatever. Doesn't really impact my gameplay and interactions with other players, the lore's already a crapshoot.'Maybe that's just my Aspie side kicking in when thinking about this...
