Ughhhhh
I agree with some of the posters here. One of two things needs to happen to deal with this:1. Blizzard disables all add-ons and then directly integrate popular add-ons into WoW itself such as an interface Editor, boss mods, bagnon, etc2. Build their own internal hosting for add-ons to be put into the game more directly either via the launcher or just doing the addon interface directly via settings.
Yall it's literally just ads. Grow up, add on creators and sites need money to stay up. Blizzard isn't gonna do anything cause it's not their business.
This is stupid. I'm an addon developer as well and have earned some money from Curse forge. My addon is available in GitHub under the MIT license and honestly blizz should just make all add-ons require GPL if things are going to be dumb like this. As soon as wago launched their thing I made it available there too. I'm not writing my addon to make money, but because it's something I wanted and use. Turning addon development into a business is a good way to kill the community around it.Also, this post is misleading by saying you get anything out of GitHub. You don't get anything at all, or at least nothing you couldn't get on any of the other platforms (like a donate button).I use Wowup because curseforge's software sucks and Wowup had the ability to get add-ons from other places (other than curseforge). The reality is that curseforge was just waiting for a reason to decline Wowup anyway as killing it was their primary focus instead of improving their stuff.
When does this take effect? Wowup still includes addons with Curse as the provider at the moment.
At the end of the day the AddOn policy from Blizzard Entertainment controls, and the policy from Blizzard Entertainment on this has always been that a developer of an AddOn must not be directly compensated for the development of an addon. They are either free or they are in violation of Blizzard Entertainment Policy and since Blizzard Entertainment is wholly within their rights to modify code however they wish including to specifically ban the use of an addon for any or no reason (Glider, isboxer, et al) AddOn Developers are violating the spirit and the letter of the AddOn Policy by receiving moneys from third party download managers (to include Overwolf's CurseForge). The reality is that in order to address this Blizzard Entertainment will A) Do nothing until it becomes egregious and then remove the code functions that allow access to the game api B) Ban Addons carried on any third party download manager and C) limit the ability of any AddOn to function unless directly approved by the developers of the game. In order for the AddOns to remain viable for all end users the likes of CurseForge and WowUp have to end if for no other reason than to provide a bullwark against the time when CurseForge and WowUp are sued by Blizzard Entertainment for IP Infringement. AddOn Developers: YOU DO NOT GET TO BE DIRECTLY COMPENSATED FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR PRODUCT IF YOUR PRODUCT IS CONNECTED TO THE World of Warcraft Network. Not even donations. That is the policy. Obey that policy and don't allow your work to be distributed by for hire third parties and this problem goes away. Overwolf and Wago.io will lose interest in their archives and move on to greener pasture if they have no audience to use their service to download and no products developed by AddOn developers to place on their platforms.
This is a tricky one. I'm completely against using anything Overwolf hosts or produces, but I do emphasise with addon developers who make intricate addons that require a lot of work. I'm embarrassed that I've never considered donating to those addons that I use and rely on (Weakauras being in my opinion the single most important addon in the game).
"We welcome competition" thats why you take every step possible to make them unuseable. !@#$ overwolf.
Overwolf is bloated garbage. Can't imagine why anyone would want to avoid them. I personally don't care about ads, I don't mind them. What I don't want is their garbageware on my system. WowUI works great, so if there's an ad or two or three, fine. So long as it works.
Curse pays Addon authors? I didn't know and have never seen that.
