Important Changes to Leveling a Hunter in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch

There is a new tab on your spellbook between General and your talent specialization, simply titled "Hunter". These are abilities that are now shared by all Hunters, regardless of what specialization they are in.

New Hunters will not begin in a default spec (Beast Mastery). Until they are allowed to choose a spec at level 10, their abilities are drawn from the general Hunter abilities available to all specializations.

Experienced Hunters will notice some talents have been reworked or rearranged, and may require re-acquiring some talents.

AoE (Area of Effect) caps are being introduced in the Shadowlands pre-patch, which places a limit on how many targets the ability can hit at once. This affects a couple of Hunter abilities.
Tajo de la bestia (Beast Mastery) - capped to 5 targets

Multidisparo (Beast Mastery, Marksmanship) - capped to 5 targets

Tromba (Beast Mastery, Marksmanship) - capped to 8 targets

Disparo explosivo (Marksmanship) - capped to 6 targets

Cuchillada/Carnicería (Survival) - capped to 5 targets

Any AOE Abilities not listed above remain the same as they were cap-wise before the Shadowlands pre-patch.

Beast Mastery: Use Disparo de cobra and Disparo lacerante to generate Focus, and spend focus on Matar and Disparo arcano. At higher levels, you can use Multidisparo to trigger Tajo de la bestia and deal significant AOE damage to targets, and send yourself and your pet on a rampage with Cólera de las bestias.

Marksmanship: Use Disparo firme to generate Focus and spend Focus on Disparo de puntería and Disparo arcano. At higher levels, you can dismiss your pet to gain more damage via Lobo solitario, deal bursts of damage with a barrage of shots via Fuego rápido or use Disparo certero to further increase your Rapid Fire and Aimed Shot damage.

Survival: Use Matar to generate Focus and spend Focus on Golpe de raptor and Picadura de serpiente. At higher levels, you can bombard enemies with Bomba de fuego salvaje or use your pet to attack enemies with complete synergy via Asalto coordinado.

Best Hunter Leveling Talents in ShadowlandsSuggested Beast Mastery Hunter Leveling Talents in ShadowlandsCólera de las bestias

Level 15 Talents:
Bestia temible is a strong, low cooldown skill that grants you a little bit more of a burst when leveling, and our recommended talent pick for this row.

Instinto asesino is not that bad of a talent option, but with how fast normal mobs die during leveling, you may not see a whole lot of damage increases from Matar.

Compañero animal is a fun talent option if you like more beasts, but it won't add as much to your damage as the other talents from this row.

Level 25 Talents:

Aroma de sangre is the best talent pick for leveling, as it rewards you for using Cólera de las bestias often by granting it a bit more of burst via granting you two free charges of Disparo lacerante. As Bestial Wrath has a very low cooldown as it is and using Barbed Shot reduces that cooldown even further, it is a very strong talent.

Uno con la manada is not that bad of a talent pick, but as Llamada salvaje relies on critical strikes to even proc, it is not that reliable for leveling due to you not being able to stack a lot of Critical Strike rating.

Disparo de quimera is an interesting talent if you plan on doing a lot of dungeons, but rather weak on a solo leveling build.

Level 30 Talents:

Pionero is a very simple and strong talent that gives you benefits almost immediately while questing.

Alivio natural is not a bad talent choice if you feel like you need to use Exaltación often, but quickly becomes useless the better you become at managing your pet.

Camuflaje is a niche talent that has its uses but the cooldown is rather long for this talent to be a reliable one. This becomes worse as Camouflage's cooldown only starts after you leave stealth.

Level 35 Talents:

Bandada de cuervos is a strong execute-style talent that has its cooldown reset every time a mob dies while afflicted by it, so it is a reliable tool to deal more damage while leveling.

Cobra escupidora isn't that great of a talent, as if you plan your Focus usage properly during Cólera de las bestias, you won't be casting enough Disparo de cobras to benefit from this talent.

Emoción de la caza can be an interesting talent choice if you manage to keep it fully stacked at all times, but you will likely have a hard time to do so during leveling, as your low innate Critical Strike chance means you will not proc Llamada salvaje very often.

Level 40 Talents:

Inmediatez is a very strong talent that grants a lot of added benefits to Separación.

Nacido para ser salvaje is not that strong of a talent, as you will not be using either Aspecto de la tortuga or Aspecto del guepardo often enough to justify the cooldown reduction.

Disparo vinculante can be a great talent for dungeon leveling, but you will need some great pet management to trigger Binding Shot while leveling solo.

Level 45 Talents:

Pisotón is a very simple yet effective talent, granting you free damage from your pet each time you use Disparo lacerante. It is especially strong against multiple mobs.

Tromba is not a bad talent, but it's incredibly large area of effect means you are at risk of pulling mobs by accident, becoming a more prevalent issue in dungeons.

Estampida is a fun talent to use, but its long cooldown and low duration means it won't deal as much damage as the other talents in this row.

Level 50 Talents:

Aspecto de la bestia directly increases your pet's damage dealt and the effectiveness of their pet family skills. It is a very passive talent but considering your pet is a significant portion of your damage, this talent is very strong.

Cobra asesina is a very strong burst talent that can be taken without too much issue if you feel like you need the added burst, but Aspect of the Beast will grant you more damage whenever you are not using Cólera de las bestias.

Derramamiento de sangre can be a good talent if you are doing dungeons often, but in solo leveling, where your pet is tanking damage for you, the increased damage taken may prove troublesome.

Suggested Marksmanship Hunter Leveling Talents in Shadowlands

Level 15 Talents:
Maestro Tirador is a great talent choice that adds even more oomph to your Critical Strikes.

Picadura de serpiente is not that great as a leveling talent, as mobs will often die far before the periodic effect has had any chance of dealing any significant amount of damage.

Bandada de cuervos can be an interesting execute talent for Marksmanship, but suffers from similar issues as Serpent Sting - Although the cooldown does reset if enemies die with it, mobs will often die before Murder of Crows has had a chance to deal significant damage.

Level 25 Talents:

Disparo explosivo is a great talent that grants you some burst and AOE damage fairly early on for a Marksmanship Hunter.

Afinar la puntería is an interesting talent that will increase the initial burst potential of Disparo de puntería, but will likely only trigger once per mob.

Tromba is not a bad talent, but it's incredibly large area of effect means you are at risk of pulling mobs by accident, becoming a more prevalent issue in dungeons.

Disparo de quimera is a very strong talent that replaces Disparo arcano with an immediate cleave ability. Stronger than the Beast Mastery version since it can be spammed rather than used on a cooldown.

Enfoque firme is not that great of a talent to use, as using Disparo firme twice in a row runs you at risk of overcapping your Focus, and the Haste increase will not be as powerful than an Disparo arcano or Disparo de puntería.

Aerodinamización is not a bad talent choice, but Chimaera Shot will provide you with more damage in the long run.

Grilletes vinculantes is a incredibly weak talent for leveling, as with proper slowing and Separación usage, mobs should not get to you before the effect from Binding Shackles is over.

Level 45 Talents:

Doble toque is the strongest talent in this row by far, at it instantly increases your burst potential with both Disparo de puntería and Fuego rápido.

Disparos letales is not that great of a talent, as the cooldown of Fuego rápido is already very low at 20 seconds, and the chance isn't reliable enough to make this talent worth picking.

Mortojo can be an interesting talent choice if you're constantly engaging with multiple mobs, but it will take some finesse to properly use this talent, as you usually won't need more than one Disparo mortal to finish off a mob.

Level 50 Talents:

Salva is an incredibly strong AOE talent option, allowing you to deal much more damage thanks to the permanent Disparos con truco effect without needing to rely on using Multidisparo.

Caza intrépida is not a bad talent pick if you feel like you need the burst damage increase from Disparo certero more often, but won't offer as much of a benefit if you aren't using Trueshot often.

Bloquear y cargar is a very strong talent when it procs, but the proc rate for this talent is fairly low and not reliable.

Suggested Survival Hunter Leveling Talents in ShadowlandsBomba de fuego salvaje

Level 15 Talents:
Términos de combate is the strongest pick in this row by far, as it greatly increases your killing speed by both granting a damage component and constant cooldown resets for Arpón.

Veneno de víbora is not that terrible of a talent choice, but a good portion of the damage increase is likely to be wasted at all times, as Picadura de serpiente takes 12 seconds to deal its full damage.

Depredador alfa is a simple talent that can be a nice pick if you need more damage, but you will likely benefit more from the increased engage speed from Terms of Engagement.

Level 25 Talents:

Tácticas de guerrilla is a very simple talent that greatly improves the potential of your Bomba de fuego salvaje by granting an extra charge and double damage on the instant portion of the ability.

Mordedura de hidra is a weak talent choice, once again, because of the periodic damage portion of Picadura de serpiente taking some time to deal its full damage. Not a terrible pick for AOE, though.

Carnicería is also not a terrible AOE pick, as it deals more damage than the ability it replaces, Cuchillada.

Buscasangre is a rather weak talent choice, as unless you manage to proc a lot of extra Matars and use them quickly on multiple different mobs, you will not get a lot of benefit from this talent.

Trampa de acero is a rather weak talent due to the periodic damage effect taking so long to deal its full damage, but the added immobilization effect can be good for leveling.

Golpe lateral is a strong talent that grants you and your pet a quick engage ability that generates extra Focus over time.

Punta de la lanza is not that great of a talent choice, as you will rarely be able to stack it to the maximum amount due to the nature of Survival's version of Matar.

Mordedura de mangosta can be an interesting talent choice, but a bit harder to use than Golpe de raptor, as you cannot use Mongoose Bite multiple times in a row to stack its damage increasing effect.

Level 50 Talents:

Infusión de fuego salvaje is a very strong talent that adds random effects to your Bomba de fuego salvaje. All effects are strong and will likely not require any extra upkeep to take full advantage of them!

Aves de presa can be strong if you use Asalto coordinado often, but Wildfire Infusion will grant more benefits when not using Coordinated Assault.

Chakrams is not a bad talent, but the pathing from Chakrams makes this talent a bit difficult to use.

Because all three Hunters specializations are DPS specializations, be mindful that you will not be able to get into dungeons super fast. You will want to quest while waiting for dungeon queues to maximize your leveling time.

In a dungeon, be careful to not pull threat over the tank or pull more mobs than them.

You've got an Arcane Shot linked where Steady Shot should be where you're talking about building focus. And Steady Shot CAN be cast while moving.

Comentario de altopelirrojo

Nice guide. I wish I had these when I leveled my first toons. But a correction: Steady Shot has a cast time but does not require the hunter to stand still. Also as a new player guide, I might throw in a caution to be careful using Disengage so you don't jump back into additional enemies.

Comentario de altopelirrojo

I would probably clarify the bit about being a sole archer in a 1-20 guide. This is not optimal unless you are level 100 and can take the Lone Wolf talent.

Comentario de 1014576

It's a big waste of time providing leveling guides and role breakdowns for the hunter. Legion is looming, and very soon everything that the hunter was is going away. Any new player thinking to start the hunter pre-legion to familiarize him or herself will only be all the more confused once Legion goes live. If I were you I'd just put an "under construction" sign over the hunter guide telling new players to check back on August 30th.

Needs an update, Beast Mastery's Starting Abilities says Exotic Beasts is level 10, but it's now level 65.

Comentario de Shadow12000

"Recommended Ferocity pets are the Scalehide, Bear and Cat pet families" Bears are Tenacity.

Also, exotic pet families do have a slight advantage over non-exotic pets because they have an extra ability, though some of these abilities are more useful than others. 2 exotic pet families in particular are the Water Striders and Pterrordaxes (-daxi?), as they give you water walking and slow fall respectively with no cooldown, which is useful if you don't have a water strider mount or can't quite get the timing on using Disengage right (or you want to gently float down from the top of a Zanadalari pyramid).

(Not sure if it's better to edit a couple month old comment or add a new one, so sorry if this isn't proper etiquette)

I’m a returning casual player. I’ve been away for over 2 years and starting fresh. Under the Utility section, a brief mention was given to Fetch. But it’s source was not expounded on at all. I know it used to be a Glyph. So far, I haven’t seen Glyphs referenced since my return. Are they no longer in game? How does a hunter now acquire Fetch?

A note on survival: it outdps both bm and mm in dungeon trash until you get beast cleave or trick shots. As for open world leveling, survival gets really good when you get crows. The kill time between bm and survival per single hostile npc is minimal. I'd wholeheartedly advice survival for a leveling spec, especially after lvl 60

There is an error on the page of the survival hunter specific abilities. Carve is given at level 23, not at level 29

Quick tip: Never use arcane shot as beast mastery. Cobra shot is a direct upgrade.

blizz should really just have hunters have two branches to be honest, survival just never gets any love - yes it is important to play what you find fun and not what "meta" guys dictate but can someone share a survival hunter story that actually ends with survival being fun? it gets no love from the game.

Who ever made this guide needs to get their eyes checked. A lot of the info (looking at BM) is incorrect. Saying use Cobra Shot to make focus when it USES focus instead? Use Arcane Shot as a filler? I think people should go looking at other guides besides this one cause this one will just cause problems, more so for new players who are just getting into the game.

I wanted to appreciate this guide. Here's the thing: I've been playing BM for years, and it was fun. That was until I made my current hunter when I noticed that my Dragonhawk was a little better than a vanity pet until level 10. Yes, it was just floating behind me. I later had no quick defense when I was swarmed when I joined the Night Fae, and since it happened a lot, I went Survival.

Back to leveling, let's not call the Legion artifacts powerful. Don't get me wrong. I'm sure they were forces to be reckoned with at one time. However, they've been through stat squishes so, the hardest hitter is Talonstrike, and even then that should be a place holder weapon.

That said, I have to refute some comments on the Survival talents. For instance, you recommend Terms of Engagement. Now I'm not doubting it has any benefit; I would think that unless the enemy's at death door or you can oneshot things, you might not see a lot of CDs. Not to mention, the only assured way to generate focus is with a pet so, I would think that would be more important.

On another note, it comes off as stupid to downplay Natural Mending. Sure, I doubted it to the point I tried out the other two. That was until I realized that if an enemy has an ability with a gray bar, it will focus on you. Also, Exhilaration is the ONLY healing move hunters have so unless you're going to be an Alchemist or Tailor, maybe you should worry about that. Not to mention, Trailblazer goes away the moment you start fighting.

I would argue something similar with Born To Be Wild. That includes Aspect of the Eagle, which increases the range of Raptor Strike to 40 yards for a few seconds. This may not be seem significant. It sure didn't to me until I realized that there were going to be fights where melee wasn't a good idea.

On another note, I agree with Mongoose Bite and Tip of the Spear. The former wasn't as strong as I hoping, and focus is used too fast to not priotize regeneration.

TL;DR: I would think a guide is supposed to help out people especially new players. However, I find that most of the comments about the talents are incorrect. Of course, there are other things that other commenters have pointed out. Those are just what stuck out to me because those convinced that whoever wrote this doesn't even like the class. (Well, and that I read other class guides that were much more helpful.)
