it depends on what your doing, pvp, pve, or RP. then again for RP you go with whatever is cooler ^^

It honestly depends on the faction, but pretty much any race can be a proficient Hunter.

However, in general...

PvE: Orc (Horde), Worgen (Alliance)

PvP: Goblin (Horde), Human (Alliance, though Worgen is pretty good too)

RP: Any possible.

Having actual self healing: Troll (Horde), Draenei (Alliance) < recommended if you hate Hunter survivability.

As for firearms: Use whatever is strongest, although I'm partial to bows as opposed to guns and crossbows (bow shooting animation is better).

Blood Elf is decent for PvP horde side as well. AoE silence, while it got limited range, is very useful against casters who fancy hugging you. I often hug enemy healers (that I'm not attacking) myself (be careful with priests, they may scream at you, but they probably won't as a hunter in melee range really isn't much of a threat, they'll rather keep the ability to get out of a tight spot), and silence them as another enemy is about to die.
I would also rank Night Elf pretty high for PvP, Fusión de las sombras is quite nice, so is Presura, but as Interest says, Human and Worgen are also good due to Voluntad de sobrevivir and Ímpetu oscuro.

Also, guns are horrible, bow is best, crossbow is ok. This of course is a personal preference (but anyone playing with sound will hate you for running around with a gun).
