Why blizz don't wanna add crits to lock AoE??
Gief plz :D

Comment by darkarsenic

Basic AoE, does have a 1-2% chance of stunning the mobs every pulse with Pyroclasm. Hellfire does do more damage, but hurts you in the process, use this if you are low on health or don't want to damage yourself.

As of patch 2.4:
This spell spawns at small pile of bones in the middle of the target area, after the spell is over it despawns. Unsure if this is intentional to be used as a guide for dragging mobs into the damage or if this is just a small visual bug.

Comment by 144172

Any one else seen the little skeletal remains that spawn on the point where you cast the spell? It's cool.

Comment by 86526

Spellpower coefficient changed in wotlk beta to 115% over 8 seconds (or about 29% per tick). This can now also crit and being a destruction spell means it benefits from Ruin and Devastation.

Comment by 137927

This spell combined with other Destruction talents = major DPS. While doing some AoE pulls I was doing almost 3k damage each time this thing ticked and crit, and 1500 when it didn't crit.

RoF is amazing now that it can crit.

Comment by 57943

This spell has a new animation as of 3.0.8.

Comment by 187426

Very cool, the pyrotechnics display is worth the mana cost. :)

This spell is a targeted AoE. Point-and-click mass destruction! =P

This does not apply a DoT on the targets ( although that would be a nice upgrade, considering what Mages get with Blizzard ).

Not as good as talented-up Blizzard that mages get for soloing, but absolutely wonderful when you have a good tank with you. VW and Felguard should work well with this, provided you watch the threat meter. The damage output does not justify the channeling time you lose when there are mobs hitting you.

Most of you have seen Rain of Fire at one time or another. You can't miss it. A hail of flaming meteors falling from the sky.

Patch 3.0.8 significantly upgraded the graphical effect. It used to be exactly as described above from start to finish. Now, there is a small explosion at ground-level, followed immediately by a glowing red magic circle that starts small and rapidly expands to cover the entire Area of Effect. At the same time, flaming meteors begin to rain down from the sky. The meteor shower falls at a slight angle to the ground, but is contained inside the magic circle. Upon impact, the meteors explode into globs of hot rocks. When the spell ends, the meteors stop falling and the magic circle fades away.

I like the new magic circle effect, but some people complain that now the Horde people can see exactly where the AoE is targeted and simply avoid the red circle on the ground. The same applies to Mage's Blizzard ( they got the same kind of effect upgrade, only blue and icy and somehow more magic-ey looking ).

Very useful in all instances and battlegrounds.

Three cheers to whatever genius at Blizzard Entertainment thought this up.

Before the fiery circle animation starts, there will be a small combustion animation at the place you cast the rain of fire spell.

Do you need to have a target or does this work like a Rogue's Distract, a Mage's Blizzard and a Druid's Tranquility?

Comment by 106166

At level 38, this spell costs 666 mana for a Human Warlock.

Comment by silkfire

Got itself a new graphic in patch 3.3.3.

Comment by Triumphator

What about rogues? Does it break stealth?

Comment by 9386

They look like garbage now. Change em back!

If you're uncertain if you should be using rain of fire or hellfire, here's why you should use rain of fire:

1. Rain of fire can crit, hellfire cannot.
2. Rain of fire's tooltip shows a lower dps than hellfire, but rain of fire has a higher spell power coefficient. The exact amount of SP depends on your crit %, but if you have around 2000 spell power rain of fire will do more dps than hellfire.
3. Rain of fire can be used from a range. If you're far from enemies there's a higher threshold for pulling aggro than if you're standing next to them.
4. Obviously, rain of fire doesn't hurt you. Hellfire does.

Both deal fire damage so I don't think there are any talents that affect one spell and not the other.

Of the few times I've used ROF, on trash mobs, I've been hit with 'ROF.... WTF?' 'ROF? funniest thing I've seen for ages' type comments in chat.

Why does it generate this reaction? As a demo lock, I use Hellfire but generally only in demon form. Just feel ROF would save me health at times, but reactions like this make me hesitant - am I missing something on the DPS output?

Comment by Allyosaugh

I was disappointed that 4 infernals didn't spawn from my 'rain' of fire spell.

Comment by 997771

Destro Locks cast this instantly and do not need to channel it, which means you can cast Rain of Fire over several areas at once so that the attack covers a vast portion of the terrain. For example, you can preemptively place several RoFs along the path you expect moving targets to run.

However a target can only recieve damage from one cast of RoF at any given time so there is no point to overlapping two different casts of RoF on the same pack of mobs.

Comment by 1057570

Now in M.o.P. rain of fire is castable as desto and u can re cast to have multiples going at the same time and they do multiply the damage if they are all hitting the same target you can also cast them in multiple spots to cover a larger area

Comment by 960080

When targeted on the corner of a wall the meteors will sometimes all fall on the same spot.

Comment by Thottbot

sweet first aoe spell for a lock. yay!

Comment by Thottbot

Its a great spell, tho a little weak at first.
However, I plan using this in Deadmines at VanCleef.
Those Blackguards are annoying.

Comment by Thottbot

This is so cool spell!
i can do it where ever i want!
like just for fun

Comment by Thottbot

this move is so cool im always on my warlock and i used it many times b4.
Ive used it on VC once and me and my roup whiped every one of his body guards out even Mr.smite

Comment by Thottbot

i am a lvl 18 warlock and i cant wit untill i get this skill im serious i cant wait untill i get this skill =)

Comment by Thottbot

This spell is cool, but it's not very mana efficient unless you aren't taking any hits and there are 3 or more enemies in the spell's area of effect.

Comment by Thottbot

This one time at bandcamp I casts this spell and it took out the whole wind section in ONE CAST! I was like OMG...

Then the baton twirlers happened to march into it and it killed them too!

I ran around and shouted I pwn U I pwn U all!

The End

Comment by Thottbot

This is the worst spell ever... I never use it, dont even to detect rouges or druids.. Hate it, and for you mr.smite and killing Defias guy with one cast is a noob as this cooment over me said dont even a 60 can take out those defiases with one Rain of Fire. TY

Comment by Thottbot

no spell "sucks" you just need to know how to use it...

this spell is great for kilkling those bugs that pop out of bigger bugs. sorry, but i dont know names.

and in duels this is useful. rogues dont know what hit them =P

Comment by Thottbot

Alright noobs, some info for you j00s. 1. Rain Of Fire will cause Daze, if specced in Destro(10% Chance). 2. Rain of Fire WILL have a 26% to STUN the opponent / opponents if specced in Destro. And with Emberstone (You guessed it, Destro Talent) your Rain of fire will do 10% more dmg. So in conclusion, this COULD be considered as a mages Blizzard, in 36% of the time it will either Daze or Stun the enemies. This is definitly not a useless spells, its most likely you people that are useless and dont know how to use this spell, its godgiven and if you dont know how to use it. Dont Buy It. Kthx.

ZoooinZs!

Comment by Thottbot

This is awsome
it makes deadmines so easy,
get a mage or paladin to put a shild on you and use the spell. It doesn't even have a long cooldown

Comment by Thottbot

Get a mage or pally to shield you?

Ever thought of a priest mate? Though I must say the mages shield would be very effective. O_o

Anyway my conclusion on channeled DoT AoE spells is that they suck. Honestly, if you like to AoE, go mage. In pvp it tremendously suck, unless your enemy got something in their eyes whilst playing. Even for detecting stealthed players it sucks, I would pick Paranoia for it.

When you encounter multiple mobs your very likely to pull aggro and get hit, and wave g'bye to your Rain of Fire. :(

Comment by Thottbot

lol mage or pally shield u?

mage can't shield others
paladin shield only lasts a few secs

so lol at u...why not rolling a mage and yelling omg my blizzard pwns instead?

Comment by Thottbot

got 5 ppl to do it in front of org =D

Comment by Thottbot

its really cool if ur takeing on a huge group of little monsters cuz u can channel it and kill them all in one spell

Comment by Thottbot

there was a blizzard in that 5 man rain of fire if you noticed

Comment by Thottbot

blizzard is so much better! just for the fact that mages r better!

Comment by Thottbot

The only use for this spell is anti rogue at higher levels. I always keep rank 1 to flush out those pesky rogues.

Comment by Thottbot

Well, i usually use this spell when i'm at low thread in instances like : SM and BFD

Comment by Thottbot

I use it in WC to kill those little flower mobs

Comment by Thottbot

Thats A Great Idea... I always have trouble with the little plant thingies... they piss me off so this spell will save me time and patience lol

Comment by Thottbot

i think this spell is alright

i like it because you could take on a camp in 1 spell but it is weak and wont hit alot in a city

Comment by Thottbot

well... for warlock aoe, i only use it in instances, but it's very easy for a warlock aoe to out-perform a mage aoe.

what you do, tab through every enemy and put a curse of the elements or agony on em... then, depending on how skilled the group as a whole is, use hellfire at close range (it will send your hp down the toilet faster than you can say fish in a barrel, but does a lot more damage), or rain of fire at a range (safer, less aggro, ranged , much easier for you on the effort, and much easier on the healer).

destruction and demonology promote hellfire and rain of fire pretty good; destruction will make them more powerful while demonology will help you last longer and basically a mage-buff tree... affliction is best off just leaving the aoe spells alone and make sure every enemy has your 3 instant-cast-dots.

then again, casters competing for dps is pretty dumb, they'll just end up pulling way more aggro than they need trying to cram in more dps... besides, success is awarded to the whole party, not just individual :P

Comment by Allakhazam

Why the hell can only Warlocks cast this spell? Why can't I cast it, as a Firemage?

:(

Comment by Allakhazam

Wel... maybe because Blizzard made Rain of Fire for warlocks? d'oh...
Besides, mages BLizzard and Flamstrike are more effective than this attack, so you don't hvae to cry about it..

Comment by JohnJacob

Tested this spell.

It deals 4 instances of damage, at 2/4/6/8 seconds into the cast. This means that if you are only going to be able to keep channeling for 0-1.99 seconds, you may as well not cast the spell at all. Similar sentiments apply to channeling this spell while taking damage (reducing the total possible channel time), and to the breakpoints between damage e.g. if you channel for 2.0 seconds, hit an enemy with the wave, and they are about to exit your AOE within the next 1 second, then you should break channeling since they will be out of the AOE by the second tick at 4.0 seconds.
