Ghostcrawler: Cobra Shot — We’re not happy with the damage yet. We want BM to basically not use Steady ever again. Marks may use Cobra in PvP situations where spell damage trumps physical damage.

the way i see it is this will still gain the double crit modifier
yet still be elemental damage so it will also gain the bonus from survival's mastery
essence of the viper
thus making this the signature shot for survival hunters replacing steady shot.
at least i hope so.

I would like to add that this ability is going to be incredible against all armored classes.
It completly bypasses armor- and regenerates focus, what's not to like?
With AotF (Aspect of the Fox)
we will be able to fire it while running
, thus getting the focus we need
on-the-move
+ the additional focus from getting meleed.
I can see myself dropping a frost trap and just kiting the Warrior around while firing off Explosive Shot and Arcane Shots -
regenerating focus with cobra while running at the same time.
Add in the monkeys special ability (
4sec Blind
) and we're looking stronger and stronger in Cataclysm.
EDIT: Monkey ability is getting fixed, Blind now breaks on dmg :( No more forcing trinket, or just pounding your unfortunate victim for 4 sec.

1.72 cast = 2 second cast with GCD. Tool tip that says 1.5 second cast is wrong :(
Too bad because that is what this needs IMO. Another nerf as this makes the rotation miss.

Im not a number cruncher by any means but i went to the plain lvl 85 target dummy today. I wanted to test out the difference between steady shot and cobra shot dps. With the regular steady shot SV rotation i found myself a little focus started but i put up around 8.1-8.3ish peaking. I then dropped cobra shot on my bars and found a very big difference when using CB instead of SS. I wasn't focus starved and i even had a few times were i could weave a arcane shot in. All the while with about a 1-1.5k dps increase to boost. This is fresh at lvl 85 in mostly blues, nothing reforged.

Does anyone know if this causes the instant damage from Improved Serpent Sting? Serpent Spread procs it every time, would be cool if this did too.

In current version there are 2 bugs of this ability. This ability desingned to be a little less powerful than Steady Shot but with the effect of enlength the duriation of Serpent Sting. Currently, no matter which spec you choose, this ability has higher damage than Steady Shot. (Tested on dummies, which has almost no armor, so it's not the effect of target armor.)
Another one is the duriation of Serpent Sting. Instead of increasing the duration 6sec, it is now refresh the total duriation.
So far with my experience, the highest crits dmg of Cobra is 15k+, with avg crits 12k in SUV, while Steady crits only 7-8k and Chimera crits about 20k but have at least 9sec CD in MM. In conclusion, this skill can totally replace Steady Shot+Chimera Shot. Because of this, currently SUV hunter has about 2-3k dps higher than MM.

The patch notes for 4.0.6 patch says that this ability is now affected by haste. Isn't it already affected by haste? Is there something more to it? Maybe add a damage scaling from haste as well?

In the time between the launch of Patch 4.0.3 and it's second Hotfix, this ability had a 1.5 second cast time IN GAME. With my haste I had a 1.31 second cast. However this change has been reverted back to a 2 second cast. I don't really expect to see any Patch notes saying this change occurred.

how come NOBODY has yet mentioned that this thing looks FRIKKING AWESOME? Its name is quite literal, since you are actually shooting a COBRA at your enemy. Turn up your volumen and you will even hear a small hiss as the snake flyes.
Almost makes me wanna re-name my SV hunter "Medusa" since SV on pvp has a fairly strong Snake Motiff. (Snake trap, cobra shot, stronger venoms, ectect)

And if so, would this increase the effectiveness of

as pets for soloing and in parties/raids where the magic damage debuff from other specs is not available?

Cobra Shot is indeed currently still 1.5 seconds, not 2 seconds.
This has been addressed on the official Forums in this threat from February 2011:

This is also good time to clear up some of the confusion about hunter shot cast times. Essentially,
ranged attacks in World of Warcraft have always had a built in 0.5 second delay to their cast time
. Since this does not apply to instant attacks,
for hunters it only really applies to Aimed Shot, Steady Shot and Cobra Shot
. Prior to the 4.0.6 changes, Aimed Shot was listed with a 3.0 cast time, but due to the delay, in reality it had a cast time that amounted to 3.5 seconds. Now that it is listed at 2.4 seconds, the actual cast time is now closer to 2.9, which is where we want it to be. We realize this caused some confusion (even for us), and we’re going to see if we can make the 0.5 second delay more visible in the future.

As of Mists of Pandaria (5.0), Cobra Shot now REPLACES Steady Shot when you get it at level 81. (At least, it did on my Beast Mastery hunter.)
So if you're level 81 or higher, don't bother looking for Steady Shot in your spell book, 'cause it won't be there.
