Hydross the Unstable is the first boss in Serpentshrine Cavern, a 25 man raid instance in Coilfang Reservoir. He was first downed by Nihilum (Horde Guild on Magtheridon - EU).

Hydross can also be tanked at 250% in the nature phase with 1 tank. This basically entails patchwerk-style healing on the nature resist MT. There is a small probability an unresisted hit will land and one shot the tank if the tank has less than 19 or 20k HP. I wouldn't suggest trying this unless the tank has enough defense to prevent critical hits while having 365 NR buffed.
This allows for me leeway on the enrage timer and the ability to put more DPS on Hydross without needing the additional tanks in resist gear.

Here's a nice tip to kill Hydross:
Switch him to from frost phase to nature face just when the 100% mark hits, because the Water Tomb ability is way too dangerous, if you have a good nature resist geared tank, with 365 Nature Res and high stamina, and maximized out crit immune --> 5.6% crit immune decrease, you should nuke the crap outta Hydross until he's just about to hit the 500% mark, then switch him, because the Vile Sludge hardly damages, meaning, when he hits the 250% mark, tell your healers to spam heal you. Really works great

Have your tank some lesser invisibility potion(
https://www.wowhead.com/mop-classic/item=3823
).
Before engage it, you can pull some poison elemants to gather rage.
When you are ready, drink the potion and move in, stand in front of it, then click off the invisibility buff.
you will have full rage to build threat and no longer suddenly transfer over the line.

Just a tip for affliction warlocks on Hydross. Just put one set of dots on each phrase, do not refresh them. Reason for this is because aggro resets on element change, and if something ticks while the new tank is establishing aggro, chances are you'll pull him back over the line, get 8 adds, and that's a wipe.
For the same reason, I recommend not wearing the 4pc tier 4 set bonus for this fight.
Observe my video here from my affliction warlock's POV:

A good way to control the adds is just have 4 bears/DPSwarriors OT them wearing a mix of whatever (inc greens) Frost and Nature resistance gear you can get (Stam and Resistance are the 2 stats you need) without over gimping your other stats. DPS warriros are fine for this so long as they have decent stamina. All the dmg is spell dmg which cannot crit so you don't need defence or anything.
The adds appear in exactly the same place (relative to hydross) so after you've wiped a few times and seen the fight you can get your OT crew to just immediately grab them, spank high threat moves on them then move them all in towards Hydross. By then it's safe to AoE the living daylights out of the clusterred mobs (including the boss).
It's also not a bad idea to but raid target symbols on the two Main Tanks.

We did this fight with four tanks, two half and half tanks and two full resistance tanks. Instead of banishing any ads we just had the tanks tank two each and move them close to Hydross. We kept all DPS on Hydross until the ads were thoroughly tanked. At that point we just aoed down the ads which also put damage on the ads.
Our AOE consistend of:
4 mages (2 fire 2 frost)
1 warlock
1 DPS warrior
This was enough to bring down the ads well before Mark 3. As well doing it this way sped things up and allowed us a larger window for burning down Hydross. We tried single targt DPS before and would have around 3-4 seconds to DPS Hydross, doing it this way would allow us 10-12 seconds (not including the dps on hydross before aoe). As well since we had our rogues and hunters stay on hydross it added a lot of extra damage.
Doing it this way we were a full 2 minutes ahead of the enrage timer and when a person called for the "15% burst" our raid leaders went "LOL"..
Once yu learn how to pull Hydross, learn how to do transitions, and learn when to aoe this fight is a cake walk. Having said that, 16 wipes to learn all of this.

Edit for posterity:
Said warlock used a path exploit back in Patch 2.3.0 to allow kiting of Hydross indefinitely. This assumed pulling the boss with Eye of Kilrogg to a specific spot then starting a very slow process of dotting the boss - jumping in the water - get out of the water etc. while the boss struggled to get to the warlock using a lengthy path.
Combined with the extreme sustainability an affliction warlock has / had, he could keep this up for a long time (i think it took him 2 hours iirc). The pathing bug was fixed pretty fast and not many people managed to do it before that hotfix.

Without a doubt, the main challenges of this fight are controlling aggro during transitions and getting the Spawns of Hydross down fast enough.
My guild found it incredibly helpful to have the tanks call out key parts of the fight. For example, the Hydross tanks would call out when Hydross was about to be changed from frost to poison or vice versa. This let the DPS know when to stop so the transition could go through without problems. The add tanks both called out when they were comfortable with their aggro so our warlocks could begin to cast seed of corruption without pulling aggro and being killed.
Nothing will help you more in this fight than communication.

We use a 5 tank strategy: 1 NR - tank, 1 FrR tank, 3 mixed tanks. (although our feral usually goes without much resist)
all the above, the adds tanks pick up everytime the same mob/position and pull it straight away on the boss. The NR- and FR tank tank the 4th add when not tanking Hydross.
Nuke down the add of the full Resist tank and aoe the others.
Most of the times all adds down before second mark is up.

Our guild found it easier to pull by sending the nature tank run to the pillar to start pulling the elementals as we send a pet to agro the boss with the frost tank right behind it to take the agro off the pet. This is because pets have smaller agro radii than players. This way, the battle can start with the frost form and you don't have to deal with 8 elementals. Also, when we switch forms, we had the entire raid run to the corresponding area so that we don't get any screwups with healing threat or dot threat.

It's possible for one prot warrior to MT both of Hydross' forms. Our Frost tank gquit the night before Hydross, so it was either don't kill Hydross (and therefore Vashj) or improvise.
I mixed and matched Fr and Nr resist pieces, and with hunter and pally auras and Flask of Chromatic Wonder, I had about 330 of both resists. We did the transitions faster, because I:
-was not resist capped
-was crittable (about 3%) due to lack of defense rating
He did not hit 5 marks, and we ended up two shotting him (first try was a wipe because a hunter pulled aggro on a transition and made him cross the line again).

The most the game mechanics will let damage be resisted is 75% regardless of your toon's level. As this is a lvl 73 Boss, the maximum reistance you want per school is 365, anything past that will have no further reduction in damage.

Duo-ed by a T10 (251) Feral Druid and a T9 (232) Holy Paladin.
The debuff isn't a huge deal, though you'll still want to switch between forms. It stacks to at least 500% if you try to stay in one form. Switching at 100% or even 250% was fine, the adds that pop do the
new
damage, so the stack count isn't a big deal.
You still want to make sure everyone switches sides, so that the aggro wipe doesn't pull the boss back over the line and you end up with 8 adds, 4 of which are doing +100% damage.
Druid tank was doing 4.5kdps, which was easily enough to beat the enrage timer. Mostly used limited swipes and glyphed maul to take out the adds, they die fast enough you don't really need to target switch.
I was surprised that the debuff didn't have a 'counter' on it. You have to actually mouse over the debuff to determine how high it is stacked.

Decided to try this guy on my way out from picking up my hunter T5 2pc from Leotheras. Was a pretty easy solo. I used a Spirit Beast, and I feel confident that between Spirit Mend (on me after frost tombs), Mend Pet, and Spirit Bond, I probably didn't even really need to change forms... but I did anyway. This should be obvious, but note that while he's in nature form, you'll have to find a place to put Steady Shot back on your bars, as he's immune to Cobra Shot (and Serpent Sting).
I was in about ~351 ilvl gear, and it was like a free 250g just for showing up. Enjoy.

Very easyly soload by blood deathknights since they can spam HS to kill adds and they will absorb big dmg aswell.
EDIT : I dont mean to se it is diffucult, but since you cant use SS or FS it should prove harder that normal.

Soloed on 85 as enhance shaman. Be sure to call your wolves early, as you will need them second time. Use your elementals to tank adds, burn them with Fire Nova - you'll need MW for healing. Definitely doable, but a bit hard to choose between getting unhealable damage from boss if changing phase too late, and getting out too many adds - we're short at AoE atm.

Soloed as 85 Ret Paladin. Half 346 and half 359 gear (including trinkets and weapon). By far, the hardest of the 4 soloable bosses I was able to manage, but it was a fun and rewarding challenge. I strongly recommend it. Also helps fill up ye olde coin purse with 250g a pop :). I'd give this boss an 9/10 difficulty rating at that gear level. Basic tactics were to burn him hard at the start, drag him out of his safe zone when i got the 50% mark, kill adds and heal up a bit and keep switching at 50% and buring adds, while waiting on CDs for a burst phase. Fight shouldn't last more than 7 or 8 minutes at that rate. Switching to Insight seal helps a lot when aiming for survivability :).
While we're on the subject, here's ratings and my strategies for the other bosses at that gear level: -
The Lurker Below: 5/10. Pretty easy. Don't get hit by his beam and kill adds when he submerges. As for the knockback, just tolerate it and heal often.
Morogrim Tidewalker: 3/10. Really easy. Does little damage. The adds he summons often do low damage and die easily. Useful for Divine Storm healing. Simply kite when he starts summoning orbs and it's won.
Leotharas the Blind: 7/10. Can be tricky, but easy if you know what you're doing. Devotion Aura for human phase and burn CDs to nuke hard. When he goes demon form, change to resistance aura and focus on surviving. Pop Divine Protection at around 12 stacks and heal like crazy. Switch to Insight Seal and spam any abilities that can generate a Hand of Light proc so you can use Word of Glory to heal yourself. When he gets to about 20% he will morph into his hybrid form and spam the demon phase fire bolt. It's crucial you don't chain to this phase from a demon phase unless you only have a few stacks, otherwise the damage can easily kill you. If you have a bubble available, then it's a non-issue. Simply use it at around 10 or so stacks and then finish him off.
Hope that helps people kill these bosses, get some classic tier gear, and earn an extra 1000g per week :).

I was surprised that the debuff didn't have a 'counter' on it. You have to actually mouse over the debuff to determine how high it is stacked.
This is because he doesn't actually stack it. If he was stacking it, then the second application would make it 20% damage, the third 30% damage, etc.
Hydross has six different spells called Mark of Hydross (and its nature counterpart), all of which share the same debuff icon. He simply applies the next strongest one in a sequence; this allowed the programmers to give the spell a "non-linear stacking" property, or at least the illusion of one.

I never let the debuff get past 50%. When you switch his form, nuke the adds down quickly and get back on the boss. Keep Bloodthirst on CD, and Demoralizing Shout up. I had to blow my Mastery trinket + Rallying Cry + Enraged Regeneration (77k heal) when he was at about 50% HP. I used Heroic Leap for the switches and got a tick of a bandage off each time. + a million rate-ups sir for Sandbox ^^ (can't seem to quote under your reply atm). Had no idea those Prismatic Elixirs existed! I was scrounging around for FR gear but when I was trying that, it ended up hurting my damage output so badly that I'd be doing just as good without the FR gear and higher stats. Previous to re-reading everything, I was at a loss of trying different combinations hoping that one would work. When I saw your post, I had wondered how the heck you were solo-killing this guy with an ilevel of 352 when I couldn't get him barely past halfway with gear in the mid 380s! Tried it with the elixir + Drums of Kings and boy, that made all the difference in the world! A couple back and forths with water/nature @100+% each and the fight was substantially easier than before (though not by any means a push over). I felt far more in control right from the get-go and didn't even have to blow all my CDs.
250G, thank you!

soloable as an Elemental Shaman, start in the Water phase until 100% debuff, switch it to the poison buff. Nuke elementals, wait for the Water debuff to drop and switch back to the water form. Nuke elementals again and nuke Hydross. He should go down then.
The important part here is that he is immune to nature damage in his nature phase and Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning is not working on him (on the adds, it does work).

Easy to solo as survival hunter with spirit bond picked up from BM, just remember to put your pet to passive from any other stance and then move into the areas where Hydross changes to frost / nature form, and just fast Misdirection (I personally use this macro for instant misdirection to pet
/target -yourpetname-
/cast Misdirection
/targetlasttarget
and just multi-shot those adds, they have low hp and will die by just one or two multi-shots.
Nature form is kinda annoying, mainly becouse of -50% dmg dealt debuff, also changing to Aspect of the Wild helps, thought not significantly. And as survival, remember to use steady instead of cobra shot, since he is immune to nature damage
And last note, if someone wonders why I change to passive instead of just moving my pet, well, I find it myself kinda annoying to move it "manually", since I seem to have problems with it, and those problems are
UNIMAGINABLE
little, but it still harms me

Just did this on my ret paladin (Argeltal - Illidan), 396 gear. Pretty easy, just as long as you switch him out from his spawn point (pulling him 30-40 yards away) and back. I'd recommend switching him every 20-30 seconds. Best way is just to use Seal of Insight and save yourself some trouble when it comes to health / healing.
Periodic use of WoG at full power is sometimes necessary. Took me less than 3 minutes to down him. I also use Divine Protection glyphed for 40% spell damage reduction. Use this on cooldown.
Very easy, just remember, don't do like I did on my first try and attempt to burn him down without moving :P.

For those of you trying to get to grips with the mechanics of this fight and thus having trouble soloing it, there are basically 2 'phases' or boss forms you have to contend with, those being his Water/Nature damage form and his Corruption/Poison damage form.
As you are probably aware, he puts a stacking debuff on you which increases the amount of damage on you which, depending on your self-heal abilities, can end up killing you. There are 2 different debuffs he puts on you, depending on what form he is in. The trick to the fight is to switch the boss between his 2 forms so that the debuffs will fall off, and the key to this is moving the boss between 2 locations.
So initially you can fight him where he spawns; this is his nature phase. When it is time to switch, walk down the ramp to drag him away until the boss switches to its poison phase. You will know it has switched because it will spawn adds and I think the boss changes colour too (not entirely sure).
At what level debuff you switch is up to you. 50% if you want to play it safe, or 100% if you have good self healing. You will need to be aware that if you are using a pet class that you will probably have to manually move it around as it can cause issues with the boss returning immediately to it's previous form, thereby allowing that forms debuff to stack even higher.
Once you get your character to higher ilvl's these mechanics become less relevant as you will likely be able to just zerg the boss down regardless.

Soloed this fight with my 85 blood DK in unholy presence to take advantage of Glyph of Dark Succor which used to be good when this video was made but now sucks. Buff up with potions, food and Drums of Forgotten Kings.
He starts off in nature form. As you fight him he puts a debuff on you that stacks up and increases the amount of nature damage he does to you. If you pull him off the platform he switches to poison form and puts a debuff on you that stacks up and increases the amount of poison damage he does to you.
So basically what you want to do is move him back and forth on and off the platform so the corresponding debuff doesn't build up too high and cause him to do huge damage to you.
Start the fight where he's standing until he starts hitting you for 10k nature damage then move him off the platform until he switches to poison form and turns green. Fight him off the platform until he starts hitting you for 10k poison damage then move him back on the platform until he switches to nature form and turns blue.
Keep repeating this until you kill him. Ignore the adds. Heart Strike and the DOTs that you spread around will kill them.
At level 90 you can probably tank him to higher levels of damage before you have to move him.

At level 90, I'd imagine it's a zerg fight that would take only a few seconds. You'd be able to outheal him easily, probably even with a +500% damage taken debuff, if it even got the opportunity to stack that high.

However, lots of guilds skip him for he is more difficult than other bosses in the instance. You need two tanks geared out in 390 frost and nature resistance gear respectively. basically, he has two phases, a frost phase and a poison phase. Whichever phase he is in is dependent upon his position. He starts out being frost, and if you drag him out beyond the flags in front of him, he turns into his poison phase. In frost phase, he shoots out watery tombs on random people that would hit others close to him (so spread out). The entombed people will be stunned and take damage. In poison phase, he shoots out a dot at random people, which is less dangerous. However, during both phases, he'll be stacking a debuff on you over time that increases frost/poison damage taken by everyone (depending on phase). After it stacks 4 times, even the maintank with 390 resist will be taking massive damage, so you need to switch his phase. When you switch, tho, 4 elementals that hit around 4-5k on non-resisted players will spawn around him, so tanks need to pick them up. They have decent amounts of hp, so the raid needs to single target them down fast and dps Hydross before his phase needs to be changed again. There's also a dps fight for his enrage timer (10 minutes I believe?). Since he clears aggro when he phase shifts, the tank with the appropriate resist can pick him up easily, but the healers also need to watch out for healing aggro, and the dps'ers need to stop dps when switch is called (stopping dots at around 3 debuff stacks). All in all a very aggro-touchy fight, gl :).

DPS won't be needing any resistance unless you can somehow pull the agro imo. Tanks will be needing good NR/FR gear.

yeah it's not very hard to kill hydross , we were 25 man raid , he spawns minios and casts some spell's but i think Phantom lord was easyer dropped that cloth robe for spellcaster and idol for druid ...

he is immune to taunt so its a good idea for 2 hunters to set up misdirect rotation and they can misdirect to the right tank after each phase since if 1 dot is left up could result in him going out or back in frost or nature form and then its a instant wipe.

is it correct that there is no physical damage in the fight? Im looking to get a decent frost resistant set but simply dont have the money or time to get all the epic plate resist gear. Instead I was thinking I could buy whatever high level FR gear I find in the AH. Anyone know if that will work?

to skip hydross just have a warlock, a shaman, and another head to lurker and summon the raid there. To do this have the shaman cast waterwalk on the warlock, the other, and himself. All 3 should drink noggenfogger until they get they 'light as a feather' buff or just use a parachute cloak. since you are not swimming, the fish will not spawn and kill you and since you slowly fell to the water, the fall damage wont make you lose your waterwalk buff. If you are a nub and somehow die just get the shaman to chain rez you all the way to a spot where you are out of the water to get a new waterwalking buff. All 3 players should be naked for this to save durability loss if something goes wrong and the warlock should bring about 30 shards for summoning.
we only kill hydross to spawn vashj. his loot is subpar and the fight is difficult to one shot. also it takes some time to build up two tanks with high frost / nature resist.
just a note - you do not have to clear the trash between the entrance of ssc and hydross. if you kill lurker first you can basically just go straight to hydross after without clearing any additional trash.

Warlocks should use seed of corruption, and tanks gather everything up into one big lot. makes killing his adds alot easier.

Not sure I believe the warlock solo thing because of that bug... I suppose he wouldn't use water prison because the lock has his aggro but even so.
Think its best to have mark of the bite on everyone in the raid when you fight this guy... just get some people to do heroic SP and go in and get the buff

Resist Gear – Frost (Feral)
Shifting the focus to leather wearing tanks Feral, giving all you wonderful Bears some love.
First, let’s face it, there is very little gear for you other than green, and crafted rings /necks and so forth.
I can help you out a bit in this area. Let me take you back to “Lights hope chapel” and while you’re there, ask yourself. Did you raid Naxx? If the answer is Yes, good, then what I am about to show you will work, if not, then all you have to do is find a Leatherworker and tailor that did raid “leatherworker” can craft everything here a "leatherworker”, “Tailoring” or by “Craftsman Wilhelm” in Eastern Plaguelands.
鐵匠維爾海姆
Here is some of the things you may need along with gold per turn in.
Frozen Rune (18)
Enchanted Leather (28)
Cured Rugged hide (6)
Essence of water (10)
Blue Saphire (2)
Bolt of Runecloth (4)
Ironweb spidersilk (12)
After each item I specify who may make it, but also know, that “Craftsman Wilhelm” if you have the rep will as well. Unless it says Quest, then there is no pattern.
Ramaladni’s icy grasp – NPC/Quest – (+25 Frost) Ring
羅馬拉丁尼之冰握
Glacial Cloak – Tailoring (+24 frost) Cloak
冰川披風
#created-by-spell
Polar Leggings – Quest (+40 Frost) Legs
極地護腿
Polar Tunic – Leatherworking (+40 Frost) Chest
極地外套
Polar Gloves – Leatherworking (+30 Frost) Gloves
極地手套
Polar Bracers – Leatherworking (+20 Frost) Wrists
極地護腕
I think here it is important to note, that this one item has less frost resist then a lvl 70 green bracer, and less armor. Yet I am suggesting you use it over a green. The reason is simple. Armor is worthless vs Hydross, second, these have agility on them, and that will help feed your threat/mitigation. Many of these pieces do. The difference in resist is -1 frost resist, +12 agility – 12 stam. It’s up to you.

This link shows how I bring my gear together for a frost set.
I need only Paladin Aura and I am 100% functional with 70% resist. Hydross, does not Crush, but he does crit. I left myself with gear to generate threat with.
If you are building a resist set of any type refer to this image:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/846968254341447720/888199833532366848/image0.jpg
If you are doing Frost/Nature to get to 70% is 365 resist, you may subtract 70 for paladin Aura, and if you want to consume +8 resist food, and Flask +25 all resist you may do so as well.
But, when you go with a 2 Way, Frost/Nature tanking strat, you can see that reaching the higher values will be possible. Being 45% Nature and 45% Frost would require (Hunter Aura, Paladin Aura +70) +149 Nature + 149 frost for a total of 298 Resist gear. And still allow the same amount of threat. Since Bears have lower requirements for defensive stats, they need less resilience/defense to maintain these numbers.
Notice I have a Medallion of the Alliance on, it is very important to have one just incase someone else accidently picks up the boss and you get entombed. It instantly allows you to get free. That will prevent your raid from wiping.
If you find this useful, let me know, I will do more in the future. Good luck bear tanking.
