A mimic octopus is actually a real animal. There are some pretty far-out videos of them on YouTube, though there's a handy identification guide here that might be of some help for the budding young angler trying to snag one of these in Pandaria:

Introduced onto MoP Beta in patch 5.0.3 (15851), this quest fish can be caught in those zones where fish type have been split into sea and freshwater, namely;
coastal The Jade Forest, Krasarang Wilds and Valley of the Four Winds (very small part). The drop rate is approximately
2%
in open water. Basically where you fish up Reef Octopus.
Unclear whether they will also drop from Reef Octopus Swarm pools. Other zones will most likely also be split this way in future patches.
They are Unique and can only be turned in once per day (one of each of the three types), meaning if you catch another after you have handed in the quest in a day, you will have to wait for the daily reset to hand in the next.
See
El's Extreme Anglin'

There are 3 Daily Fish, as the name implies they can only be turned in once daily. It is however possible to catch one of them again after you turned it in, even on the same day. If you already turned it in you will get the message: "You have completed that daily quest today"
飛天虎斑絲足魚
- Can be cought in open freshwater areas in Krasarang Wilds and Valley of the Four Winds. (Good spot is Dojani River, just north of Anglers Wharf) (Coordinates are 64:28 in Krasaran Wilds)
擬色章魚
- Can be caught in the salt water areas where you can catch
暗礁章魚
. (A good spot is Anglers Wharf - Just fish from the boat Nat Pagle is sitting in.) (Coordinates are 68:44 in Krasaran Wilds)
棘魚首領
- Can be caught at Inkgill Mere in Kun-Lai Summit. (If you have done the quests you will have waterwalking on while fishing) (Coordinates are 72:87 in Kun-Lai Summit)
All 3 of them can also be caught from schools of fish in the suggested areas.
Be patient even with the increased dropchance, they can still take a while to catch.
All of them gives the following upon turn in:
1
次級好運符咒
350
Rep with
釣手隊
600
Rep with
納特·帕格
Edit: Changes to reflect the changes to reputation.
Edit 2: Changes to rewards of quest since patch 6.0. (No longer offers valor points upon completion of the quest)

These things have the weirdest rate for catching. For me, normally it takes about 20 to get one. The other day, fished for a Mimic Octopus, took around 10 to 20 casts to get. Turn it in, grab the other quests, for the hell of it, I cast at Anglers Wharf, sure enough first cast, it drops.
Today, well over 50 to 75 ish casts, none as of yet. Still working on it.

Used to gain reputation with
Nat Pagle
The reputation is used to purchase:
納特之帽
(Exalted / Best Friend)
Friendship Levels
Stranger: 0-8400
Acquaintance: 8400-16800
Buddy: 16800-25200
Friend: 25200-33600
Good Friend: 33600-42000
Best Friend: 42000-42999
How to gain Reputation:
Standing with Nat Pagle is gained by catching daily fish.
擬色章魚
and
飛天虎斑絲足魚
have a 1% droprate.
棘魚首領
on the other-hand has a 2% droprate. Just like real life, Best Friend status takes 84 fish hand-ins. This means it will take between 28 and 84 days depending on how many of the three fish you turn in each day. The daily fish cannot be caught from pools, only open water.
Once you have catch a daily fish you should stop fishing its water until you have delivered it to Nat Pagle. Each daily fish is unique, so you cannot catch another while you have the first in your inventory. You can however move to a new location and catch your next fish before handing all three in. Once a daily fish has been turned in, you may fish it up again, although you will not be able to hand the new fish in until the following day. This allows you to catch three fish hand them in, catch the three fish again so for the following day all you have to do is hand them in. This is useful if you have other things planed or you got lucky with today's catch and had some spare time.
Rewards for each hand-in:
1 x
5 x
Valor Points
350 x

Reutation
500 x

I sacrificed my time/sanity for Science! and tried to fish one up while waiting for raid to start tonight. I actually got lucky and caught one rather quickly. I just started the second char for Nats friendship. Found couple of places and i hope that may help. While doing with the first char. spent in fact waste too many hours flying all around the pandaria. Those 3 spot is the fastest way that i found.
While doing this dailies i use heat-treated spinning lure on kaluak pole, a glove with gatherer, fishing hat and anglers spear when its off cd.
Mimic Otopus: Farm very close to Nat. It takes about 25mins to catch 2 of that fish. Even with +100 lure you wont get any grey junks there. Just make sure your fishing skill is more than 710.
Flying Tiger Gourami:Valley of the four Winds 57:68 on a very small island on the river. 25mins for catch 1 fish, fly to Nat, turn in and fly back for fish the second. Same like mimic octopus, if you dont have +150 lure you can use a +100 without catching any greys.
Spinefish Alpha:66:61 dread wastes on a rock at Lake of stars. Spending 15mins to catch 1 spinefish, fly to nat, turn in, fly back and fish second one. Unfortunately you need +150 lure here. With even +100 lure about %20 catches are grey junks. but with 150 bonus i never saw a junk. If you see many greys it means you are gonna spent a lot more time to find the rare fish.
While doing these dailies i catch 4-5 stacks of golden carp, 2 stacks of mimic octopus, a stack of krasang paddlefish and spinefish, half stack of emperor salmon and 2-3 crates.

It looks like as a patch 5.1 (which hits yesterday) I was able to catch that octopus in Reef Octopus Swarm.
Look at fishing bobber, its clearly inside fishing pool.
No idea about 2 other fish for Nat Pagle reputation.
I was able to catch Spinefish alpha in a spinefish pool today
i caught this fish in a Giant Mantis Shrimp Swarm. Also had the Ancient Pandaren Fishing Charm equipped. It did get fished up along with a Giant Mantis Shrimp. Not sure if they always get caught in pairs or the charm worked?
So, meanwhile i read something more about fishing in 5.1 and here it is:
Since patch 5.1, the fish can also be caught from pools - typically the pools found in the same areas of open water, what means that:
Mimic Octopus - can be fished in any Pandaria open coastal waters -> can be fished in Reef Octopus Swarm and Giant Mantis Shrimp Swarm
Spinefish Alpha - can be caught from areas of open water near Sha-infested land -> Spinefish Pools
Flying Tiger Gourami - may be caught from all areas of inland open water in Pandaria, except waters near Sha-touched lands -> all inland fishing pools like Krasarang Paddlefish or Emperor Salmon schools.
All credits go to Elsanglin.

The furthest away is 30,78 which is on the Isle of Chi-Ji in the Krasarang Wilds. I have been fishing swarms lately which, in my imagination, seem to be working.

So I believe I have found a relatively painless and somewhat profitable way to farm up the three daily fish. Improvement suggestions are welcome. This is just how I've done it for the past three days. It's taken less than an hour to get them all, and I've made some fairly decent money on my server doing it.
1. Go to the lake just north of Grookin Hill in Jade Forest. Lots of Jade Lungfish schools here. Fish those up until you get the
飛天虎斑絲足魚
. Stop fishing freshwater.
2. From there, fly west into the summit and fish the Sha touched waters around Inkgill Mere. Fish in the
棘魚
schools until you get
棘魚首領
. Stop fishing sha touched waters.
3. From there, fly east across Jade Forest until you reach coastal waters. Fish any school of fish you see on the coast while heading south. Sometime before you reach the Anglers location, you should fish up a
擬色章魚
. If you dont get it before you get to the Anglers, just keep going. I've never had to make an entire loop around Pandaria to get it done.
It should probably be noted that I am at 600 fishing and I use the following equipment.
抗惡劣天候釣魚帽
大師製卡魯耶克釣魚竿
發光蟲
Today's run of this route got me all three fish in less than an hour. And between vendor trash and items sold on the auction house from sealed crates as well as fish I wasn't going to use, a little over 700 gold.
Happy fishing everyone!

I've found that it is just as easy to fish off the pier next to Nat to get the mimic octopus as I typically catch one with in 15 casts just from the pier itself. And if you are doing these every day for the rep for Nat I've found that the best place to catch the flying tiger is in the veiled stair tunnel. There are plenty of tiger schools & since you are already at the Inkgill Mere to get the spinefish alpha fish this is just a short turn around from there to fish up & you don't really have to fly out of your way anyplace else to get them. And since you will have the spinefish alpha & the flying tiger then when you turn them in you can fish off the pier next to Nat for the mimic octopus. All in one stop vs flying in circles.

So I followed Synit's instructions as he said. I went to Angler's Wharf in Krasarang Wilds and tried fishing for the Mimic Octopus just outside the Wharf on a rock. I cast the line two times and got nothing, so I started thinking 'Why don't I try fishing from the Reef Octopus Pools for the guild fishing achievement?'. So I went and flew around to find some pools and I didn't find any so I decided that was just a waste of time. So I went back to the Angler's Wharf, stood on the dock of it, cast the lure and got the Mimic Octopus in my first cast.
After that I went to the Dojani River just north of the Wharf for the Flying Tiger Gourami, just like Synit suggested. Doesn't really matter where you are, I got it in my second cast again.
I caught the Flying Tiger Gourami fish once before while fishing for the Golden Carp in a river in the Jade Forest for the Order of the Cloud Serpent daily.
I guess I was lucky at the other 2 fishes because it took a few casts before finally getting the Spinefish Alpha fish. I caught it once before at Inkgill Mere in Kun-Lai Summit when I was fishing for the Brawler's Guild quest item. There were a lot of pools up now aswell so I just fished in those and got it in about 28 casts.
My fishing level was 600+110. I used the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole (30+ fishing when equipped), the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat which you can obtain from the daily fishing quest rewards in Orgrimmar/Stromwind or Dalaran (5+ fishing when equipped & 75+ fishing lure every 10 minutes - the lure lasts for 10 minuts aswell) and the Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots obtained from the Booty Bay fishing contest (5+ fishing).
I hope this helps. Good luck fishin'! :)

'Even in death, the strange creature continues to change color to blend in.' On earth (as opposed to Azeroth), many octopuses, squid, and nautiluses are capable of changing colour. The mimic octopus is named not for its ability to change colour but for its ability to take on the shapes of other species.

I got sick of not being able to remember if I'd done a Nat Pagle turnin for a given day so I put together this macro:
#showtooltip Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole

Obviously showing your fishing pole isn't required, but I wanted things to be obvious for me. If you so choose simply use the part starting at /run.

I do not know when it was implemented, but as of now
『大聲公』班

And I get Nat Pagle quests within a few catches every time. Anyhow, they aren't as rare as you might think because they use camouflage to hide amongst rocks and plants; only a very skilled fisherman has any hope of catching this elusive, and delicious, morsel.

I really didn't want to lose it and as I have auto loot on and knew I couldn't have two in my bags at the same time I kept clicking it's icon. What happened is it went straight into my mailbox and a note from the Postmaster. Like when you are raiding and have run out of room sometimes the Postmaster is kind to you and sends you the epic items later. Kinda nice as fishing is so meh. Good Luck all.

I reached exalted using mainly just this Mimic Octopus. I would fish there next to Pagle and would catch one, turn it in, catch another and save it for the next day so I only had to stop and fish every other day. The odds to catch the Mimic seemed to vary widely. My fishing skill was 600(+110) for a total of 710.
My best day I caught one on the first catch, turned it in, caught the second one on the third cast. 3 total casts - but that was rare. Another day I caught one on the 4th cast and 12th cast.
Most days I could catch both in 20-30 casts, but my worst day took 85 casts to catch the first one, and the second one was on the 102nd cast. So if it feels like your not having any luck, or it is broken, just keep on casting. No pools needed, just open water there on the docks. I would stand next to Linnshi who says a few random fishing related comments while she is fishing.
