tl;dr Just give it to whoever needs it more.

Greedy tank: "It has a socket bonus on it that gives a wooping 45sta, tank helm!"

Greedy dps: "I've seen you reforge away all your expertise to mitigation, I actually use that stat, dps helm!"

ps. blizzard probably intended it as a tank helm, they count expertise as a tank stat but in the current threat situation it's not valued very high by most tanks.

Mastery is the best stat for both prot warriors and paladins. This helm has a ridiculous amount of it, plus a great socket bonus. Who cares about the tiny amount of expertise, it doesn't hurt and can be reforged.

The insane amount of mastery IMO makes this thing BIS for ANY plate tanking class. Not to mention the awesome look.

Yes, the socket bonus may be for stamina and yes it may have a little less strength then a traditional DPS helmet.

However, even including the changes to the other tanking helmet happening in 4.0.6 if you are a frost deathknight who is dual-wielding this helmet is your best in slot until 4piece tier.

Why?

281 mastery rating, that's why. there's also 113 expertise rating on it it as well. This helmet is AMAZING for frost dual-wield. So don't be shy when you see that stamina bonus. Once your tanks are situated with their helmets, grab it.

Actually ill be oblidged to say, while this is leaning to be more of a tanking head, im really looking forward to trying to get this.

Atm, im using the Justice Points head, as an UH deathknight, in 4.0.6 mastery will be savored in an AMAZINGLY big amount, getting Death coil way up above in our dps meters, not to mention that with the overall lack of expertise, its not bad overally.

So simply, id just wait till patch, so I can actually say, hey look, Mastery is 2nd Best Stat for dks, why should I be able to get it?

Not to mention, how hard it is to get another epic DPS head, its either ChoGall or Nefarian, while Maloriak is a very easy boss easyly reached by pugs.

AskMrRobot.com lists it as a dps helm and 2nd BiS for DW Frost and Retribution while being 3rd for every other plate dps spec, it's not even on the tanking lists because expertise isn't that valued when you put all the stat weights together. Seriously, if you have a DW Frost DK/Ret Pally and a Prot Warrior in your group, let the DK have this and give the Daybreaker Helm to the warrior... end of discussion

Even though there is the ever present tank vs dps argument about this helm, has anyone noticed that there is a lack of strength when compared to both tank AND dps helms?

Daybreaker Helm and Helm of Maddening Whispers both have 281 Strength and 512 Stamina; they're both 359 helms with the same base stat distribution.

Unless the loss of 21 Strength on this helm is due to the rather high amount of mastery, I think this helm is bugged at the moment. This is from an arms warrior perspective; if this helm had more strength, and a homogeneous socket bonus, it could probably be BiS for a lot of dps as well. There are three plate tank/dps helms that drop; perhaps blizzard could make this an either/or plate helmet?

I'd say that I'm very interested in this helm for my Blood spec. Mastery is the cat's meow for Blood DKs as our Blood Shield draws directly from it. If I had to give an DPS vs Tank answer, I'd have to say that I'm pretty sure Blizz intended this as a Tanky helm, but in certain situations I could see a DPS'er needing on it as well, especially if they are a DK who has Blood as off spec.

Combine that and the fact that Plate helms are pretty hard to come by at the end game and you'll have people wanting it simply because it's a 359 Epic. There are better tank helms, and there are better DPS helms, but this helm seems like it's between them and the 346 gear you're probably wearing at the moment. The strength on the helm isn't bad, gemmed you could evoke 353 Str out of it with +40 Str and Reverberating meta.

Had this item taken from me by a Fury warrior :( My own guildy nonetheless !

Won the tank wrists from Halfus - so passed on the worm breaker that dropped from Magmaw since I already won a piece of loot and then! he won a BoE boots . And again had the cheek to roll on the helm and since I'm new to the guild I really didn't have a place to moan :( Needed to vent !

Ofcourse this was made for tanks, just look at the socket bonus and the reduced strength. This was made as a tank item, enough said. But its still great for Retri Paladins for example due to the HUGE amount of mastery. The mastery adds up for the loss of strength and makes this loads better than Blue ones.
