A gladiator is a person that is forced to fight for his life and to do that he may need to fashion weapons out of anything he can, that's why this looks so ugly, blizz is trying to make you feel like an actual gladiator.

(proportionally) this thing looks tiny on a blood elf, but on a tauren it looks just right. its with every sword. whats up with that? (actualy its just the females)

Anyone notice that if they play a warlock and they hover over the icon, there are no red restriction texts?
Even the icon itself isn't shaded in red, yet the axes, maces, and 2handers (save staves) are shaded in red which indicates you cannot use it.
