At level 80, the base spell - https://www.wowhead.com/mop-classic/spell=48782 plus nominal healing gear (at least 1200, presumably) should have HL landing up near 8k, it could AoE heal for 800.

Whether that's 800 across all 5 people, or 800 on each person, remains to be seen. As does whether the original heal target also receives an extra 10% from this glyph.

This glyph as stands is not very helpful. If it increases the heal on the initial target by 10% as well it is instantly good enough to take a major glyph. However, if it doesn't, the chance of more than 2 targets being 5 yards together is very slim, especially if WotLK fights are better done spread out like a lot of current BC encounters.

Melee often get hit- you're healing the tanks, right?

In that report it healed 10% across the board- and on fights with stacking (Ignis, Festergut, Rotface to an extent) this can rise to 15%. Melee are certainly the ones being healed by this glyph, and it is certainly useful.

Real spell (according to WoL) is Glyph of Holy Light.

The changes to this glyph at the moment for Mists of Pandaria
Holy Shock critical hits restore 1% max mana, but mana regeneration from spirit reduced by 10%
Using the current CATACLYSM stats, it would require around a 45% crit chance from Holy shock for this to be beneficial, however Max mana pool as I post this, is increased by 400% in Mists, so that could easily change.

Here is an article that breaks down the theorycrafting for this glyph. If you don't want to read the reasoning, here is the guideline the OP arrived at:

Assumptions: 10 minute fight, using HS every cooldown (i.e. 6 casts/min). Level 90 holy paladin with:

Y% Holy Shock crit chance (base spell crit + 25%)
X Spirit

If (X > 226*Y) then Glyph of Illumination is an overall mana loss.

Considering that a 10 min fight is a bit generous (beneficial to un-glyphed), as is using HS on CD every time (beneficial to glyphed), the formula seems to balance out as correct for a general rule of thumb.

Currently, Spirit is the highest priority for gemming/enchanting for holy paladins, so unless you are running a Crit build (depending on the healing core it can be viable/necessary), Spirit will almost always be greater than 226*(HS Crit Chance).

tl;dr
If you are following mainstream stat weights, this glyph is a mana loss.
