I always liked the Yeti in Hillsbrad/alterac. They drop cash like humanoids, and you can skin them. There's also a couple of quests in that area, so people kill them and leave bodies all the time.

Of course, there is always chance your level in skinning exceeds your level as character. So you can kill beasts that drop mainly medium, but your skinning requires heavy. Just give it some time. What level are you?

Try Dustwallow Marsh...pretty much everything you can kill there can be skinned for Heavy Leather.

Often it is just one at a time but this is standard for all skinning really.

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you think the grind for heavy leather is bad, wait till you need Thick Leather. In my experience I'm leveling much quicker than my leatherworking is, so all my quests were in association with mobs that dropped Rugged Leather when my leatherworking needed Thick Leather. I found by far the best place to farm that though is Tanaris.
