I have both a Lock and a Mage leveled to 85. Both classes are equally fun. Leveling the Lock was a bit easier than the mage with a lot less down time and having it's own "Tank" to help out (When I leveled my Mage, "Permapet" wasn't an option, and even now, they don't "tank").
Running dungeons (non heroic), the Mage is doing a little more DPS than the Lock, but that in part is probably because I've had the Mage since Vanilla, and started the Lock in WotLK, so I understand the Mage better and react quicker to procs and such.
To be honest, both classes are pretty even in terms of DPS, CC, and raid buffs. You really can't go wrong with either class as a "Main".

imo mages have no real flavour to them. They are just your generic magic user. Warlock's are the dark, evil cousin who drink from human skulls and feast on innocent souls. That's much more interesting don't you agree?
Candor forces me to admit I do like the sheep spell. That is quite humorous. Though the version in the cinematic trailer is considerabilly funnier than the actual spell.

There really isn't much of a difference.
If one was stronger than the other it would get patched anyway. Being better is only a temporary thing and it is usually followed by being worse since Blizzard tends to over-nerf things. Until you are 85 there each class will have been buffed and nerfed several times over so looking at the current state of the game and possible imbalances between Warlocks and Mages is completely pointless.
I personally prefer Warlocks (duh, I'm reading this forum) because they are more flexible. You can chose between having a strong pet (like Hunters), having tons of self healing and DoTs (very much like Shadowpriests) and having offensive (almost mage-like) fire magic. As Warlock you get the play style of three other classes rolled into one.
A mage just feels more generic and thus boring.

Well... with Archaeology improving experience gain by considerable mounts while in queue, you basically have 2 options:
Choose the more versatile, not same-old same-old Warlock, and solo better that way
Choose the more boring Mage, profit off of ports, and tele "nearby" Archaeology sites when needed.
So for leveling, each has its way. Mages do get quite a bit of $$ from ports (never have to ask for that extra 5g you need for that special something on the AH again, not that I endorse this anyways). However, in return, they're more... boring. Arcane=boring. Fire=boring, except for the Fire Blasts and insta-pyro every now and then. Frost=would be fun, except everyone goes Frost now. Not unique anymore. Warlocks=most fun out of any Cloth class.
EDIT: Oh, and for PvP... if you're gonna go Demo Lock, check out the forum I just made earlier today:

I have an 85 lock, and 85 mage.
One is a dps caster class, the other is a dps caster class. One wears dps caster gear, the other wears dps caster gear.
There is no real difference besides the spells you are casting. Despite the dots, the style is the same: single spell nukes. The only exception to this is affliction, which emphasizes dots. This sets it apart form the other specs, and makes it really the only style differing from mages. The pet is pretty much autopilot, and won't effect your play style much.
And don't trust the boredom mongers, the mage isn't bad when it comes to fun. My mage is fire and I have sheer joy in aoe pulls throwing living bombs and blastwave+flamestrike combos, then spreading all those dots around with a proc'd fireblast, and watching the living bombs all go off at once.
