They are adding this sigil for 15 Emblem's of Heroism https://www.wowhead.com/mop-classic/item=40752 in patch 3.0.8. However, it now reads "Equip: Your Icy Touch has a chance to increase your defense rating by 53 (+10.78)."

While Blizzard did state that they would be giving us more sigils, and some that are going to revolve around Tanking, there are issues that arise when considering the "New" Version of this Sigil.

The fact that it is only "a chance" to increase defence causes issues for any Dk that is trying to meet the defence cap, or using this for an upgrade when switching from the high defence blue items to the slightly lower defence, higher avoidance epic's from heroics/set gear.

Of course, the main factor is how high the proc chance is on this sigil.

Personally I will be buying the sigil from Venture Coins that boosts Icy Touch damage instead, the proc chance would have to be close enough to 100% on this to consider using it as a viable source of Defence while tanking or just as a source of additional avoidance... As a "chance" is not a good thing when trying to stay crit immune.

For those interested in the other Sigil, it's name is "Sigil of the Frozen Conscience"

The proc rate is 100% and the duration of the buff (Unflinching Valor) is 30 seconds.

Also, no hidden cooldown.

Repeated testing (45 minutes only) shows this to be a 100% proc with the name "Unflinching Valor". The proc lasts for 30 sec regardless of talents and is refreshed upon every application of Icy Touch.

Want to know something interresting? Sigil of the Unfaltering Knight also procs on misses, so the only thing to keep you from a 100% up time is a silence (quite hard to fail to keep a 30 sec buff up when silences only last 2-5 seconds).

I don't see why not to use....the item has a 100%proc rate and lasts for 30secs each proc. It clearly should only be used after u have reached the def cap, and will only serve as migitation. Even still, there isn't another Sigil that a DK tank could get any better use from. The sigil works, i've checked personally. Don't be scarred away from this item.

Why all the fuss about the def cap? With this sigil you can scrap some of your def gems for stamina, or def gear for dodge/parry. Most decent tanks will pick up extra tanking gear with less defense and more avoidance 'just in case they get too much defense.'

And there's too many people complaining about 'Having to add IT to the rotation.' Icy Touch is a priority ability for all specs and roles of Death Knights. Keeping both diseases up on your target at all times is essential to maximizing your dps and/or threat generation, whatever role you serve.

If you're not casting IT more than once every 30 seconds, for any reason including the sigil proc duration, you fail as a DK and should probably go back to your old main.

I'm a unholy tank DK with glyph of scourge strike so I don't IT a lot and i don't think that i'm failing at the class mechanics however i do think that this glyph is a improvement and welcome it

Actually it isn't a Glyph, it's a Sigil so it really isn't important which glyph you use, its more like using your IT to keep the diseases up, increasing you defense AND your dps / threat.

Seriously, Blizz needs to pull their head out when it comes to DK tanks.

We're supposed to be mitigation tanks, yet we have LESS static mitigation then pali/warrior tanks. Not only that, they nerfed the castable mitigation we have because of it's success in PvP. I never actually realized how big the difference is in DK/Warrior/Palidin damage until I hit 80 on my priest. DK's can go from 100% to 30% hp in the time it takes me to blink. THEN, the one thing blizz could use to help with the fact that we don't have a shield and the block/stam/def that comes with it (the sigil) we got a POS tanking sigil that procs on use of an ability to boost our defense.....

Some might say this is a nice sigil, but I once again call BS. The stats on a shield aren't proc, the stats on DK sigils shouldn't be either.

Either the tooltip is wrong or the item is bugged. For me as a casual equipped tank its currently great to rely on this item bringing my defense to over the 540 cap, seeing as it has 100% procrate and 30 seconds duration. Im betting it will be bugfixed.

The only reason it simply doesn't just have 53 Def Rating instead of the proc is that Blizzard's tactic with Relics is that they do not have have plain stats on them, they modify abilities instead, giving extra benefit.

Having a 100% Proc for Def Rating is the closest you can get to static Def Rating, which was the intended purpose of this item, i.e. to help Death Knight Tanks get to the Def Cap more easily without a Tanking Weapon, Shield or Ranged slot.

If the proc rate gets nerfed, I doubt it'll go less than 50%, although I doubt more that it will get nerfed at all. A 100% chance is still a chance. :)

In terms of actual usage, I like being Def Capped without the proc. The chance of getting critically hit before using IT is very small (I usually pull groups with DnD), however it's still a chance. Stupid I know, but better safe than sorry. Def Rating after the (soft) cap is far from worthless for Tanks, especially DKs, since Icebound Fortitude's damage reduction increases with Defense, in fact Dodge > Defense > Parry after the Def cap.

This is not a "Chance" on icy touch, if your icy touch hits a target, you get the proc. It's kinda like the trinket, says it doesn't work for ranged attacks, but it does. Blizz just needs to stop failing at their wording. It lasts for 30 seconds, plenty of time for both your ice runes to be used and cool down before you have to use it again.

But Howling Blast will put on Frost Fever now, too. The only reason I was using Icy Touch before was for FF, then Pestilence, then HB. This changes my rotation a bit, but I dunno about anyone else.

Okay, a Quick run-down

the Sigil is GUARANTEED to proc on Icy Touch cast
If you use Icy Touch in your rotation, this Sigil basically counts as a permenant +Def
If you are using Glyph of Disease then you still need to cast Icy Touch once every 30s to keep it up, which means modifying your existing rotation.
It is safe to say that ANY OTHER glyph will be better than this glyph, so long as you are Def Capped, as it allows you to switch back to a proper rotation with Glyph of Disease
This is a good trinket for new 80s looking to hit the defence cap (which is quite hard to do) and once you do reach the def cap, it's safe to replace it

Just an FYI...you can use this Sigil for the 30 second buff and then switch to a different Sigil (with a macro or whatever) and the buff stays.

For instance, I use this Sigil at the start of a fight and then have my Runestrike macro'd with Sigil of Deflection so I actually tend to end up with both buffs at the same time a most of the time. I then also have my IT macro'd with the SotUK to reapply my defense buff every 30 seconds.

Now, whether this is working as intended, I don't know...but Sigils count as a weapon slot so the only thing you have to worry about is a potential GCD loss.

Has been said several times in this thread and my guess is the DKs saying it haven't tanked any heroics or raids yet. Sure, some DKs still keep IT in the rotation because it can generate nice RP with the glyph, but many Frost DKs will opt to use (as stated by a couple people, but not ranked up) glyph of HB and then use HB rather than IT since it does far more damage and you want to use it whenever it's off of CD anyway. I know I hardly use IT in my rotation now that I have the glyph of HB and because of that I probably won't be getting this Sigil. It provides roughly 1.5% avoidance for a rotation that I don't use. I may switch up my glyphs sometime soon, and if I do, I'll probably get this Sigil because of the small gains that will be of some benefit once IT comes back into my rotation.

On a side note, this should definitely not be used to maintain defense cap, but rather for the extra avoidance.

You should no longer be able to switch to a different sigil and keep this buff. From the 3.2.2 patch notes:

Relics: All buffs provided by relics (idols, librams, totems and sigils) now share an exclusive category such that gaining a buff from one of these items will remove all other buffs gained from items in this category.

As of 4.01, this now provides a flat dodge/expertise rating, rather than the buff. No more arguing about Icy Touch, thankfully.

The description of this item says it has a chance to give you the defense. I bought this yesterday and every time I cast my icy touch it gives me the 53 defense buff for 30 seconds. PRetty much if your in combat you should have the buff at all times.

If I had known it was more then just a chance I would have bought this a long time ago.

with my tank DK I am wearing the "Sigil of the Unfaltering Knight" which should GUARANTEEDLY give 53 defense rating after casting "Icy Touch".
I just tested it, I actually only get after applying "Icy Touch"on the mob 11 defense rating, only from 458 to 469.
Is that a bug and is it known?
