You can find them at orange side in Maraudon where they dwell freely or sometimes they join your other pet battles in Desolace. In that case, in order to catch one, you must kill the first pet you fight, because you can trap only one pet during one battle.

If you're trying to catch one of these, better watch out for the Stone rush ability. I've lost multiple topaz shale hatchlings so far because of that (It deals damage to your pet, but also to themselves).

I was leveling up my pets in Desolace and one of these appeared as the second combatant, at first it gave me the message that I couldn't tame it, but as soon as I got the health down it was mine, pretty nice to get at such a low level. Makes me wonder what other surprises are in store!

Catching these in Desolace is often an adventure in frustration, due to the Stone Charge ability they have. When they use it, they will do a good amount of damage to themselves, and it acn kill them, so if they're weak for a capture, they may just suicide before you can get them.

It may be preferable to wait until Deepholme level pets, just so that you don't have to worry about it as much due to the fact they may have different abilities in the wild. Abilities that don't include exploding themselves to do damage to you!

They CAN be found in the orange side of Maraudon, but they're few and far between. Unless you just want to grab one for your journal and GTFO if you're already in the area, wait until you're in Deepholm. There's scads of the little purple bastards on the other side, but the yellow ones are significantly more scarce.

They do, however, show up intermittently as a secondary to other creatures outside, as I found out to my complete surprise, when a rare topaz hatchling popped up to fight behind a poor-quality rock viper just outside of Nijel's Point. Suffice to say, I was right chuffed. :)

Rare hunters, take note!

Alt+f4ing, exiting the game, or otherwise disconnecting will reset any pet battle so long as one pet in the encounter is still alive. After you re-enter the game, the pet will have respawned in the same spot with the same battle configuration, including add-on pets and rarity (if any).

Any pet abilities in the encounter may be re-rolled when using this method.

So if you accidentally kill a rare battle pet (or it kills itself, as this pet tends to do on occasion), you can reset the encounter so long as one other pet is still alive.

Probably just weird luck, but I've found 5 (edit: 12) rare Topaz Shale Hatchlings as secondary fighters to Amethyst Shale Hatchlings in the entrance tunnels (The Wicked Tunnels) to Mauradon.

orange part is when you went down the path (from maraudon entrance gate) until you reached a T-junction. left side is the purple-crystal path and the right side is the orange-crystal path. take right.

One side of maruadon(spelling) caves has a boat load of amethist hatchlings, it took me about 30-40 battles before i found a rare. There were a few topaz mixed in there but all the ones i found were uncommon or poor. the other side of the caves had a few maybe 6) topaz hatchlings as primary pet. I got lucky on the last one and found a rare. Was very careful(and lucky) with stone rush. I had gotten him to right at 35% health to catch him and he cast stone rush, left himself with 4 health.

TLDR, use weak spells and be prepared to pass a turn if you have to.

I don't know if it is a bug or an oversight by Blizzard or if they were just feeling generous, but when you go into Maraudon you get to a spot called Zaetar's Choice. There are two centaur statues ahead of you with a path between them - don't go there.

To the right is the path to Foulspore Pools where you will find loads of Topaz Shale Hatchlings, about 10% are flagged for pet battling - don't go there.

To the left leads to the Wicked Tunnels where you will find loads of Amethyst Shale Hatchlings, where (at least all the time I was there) 100% of them are flagged for pet battling - go here.

Because there are so many pets for battling in such a close proximity (you can't go more than a couple of yards before the next pet to battle), I figured that I would stand a better chance of obtaining all the rares I required from Desolace much more quickly as seconds to the Amethyst Shale Hatchlings than if I were to roam around the zone looking for them individually. As it turned out I was correct and got all my Desolace Rares including both the Amethyst and Topaz shale hatchlings in this spot. So If you are in desolace farming for rare pets just go to the Wicked Tunnels, where you will find everything under one roof as it were.

If you are pulled from the battle by a mob pulling you or an enemy player pulling you, it will keep the "rare" pet around... So keep a friend around. ^_^

I went to Maraudon and there were a TON of the Amethyst. They are all in the caves before the instance. I got my rare Topaz Spider as the 2nd battle pet. There are so many Amethyst, I feel this is a fast easy place to get them both.

Confirmed that you do not have to be in or near Maraudon to get one of these (although that still might be the best place to capture one).

I captured a rare Topaz Shale Hatchling as a secondary battle pet to a Forest Moth in the Cenarion Wildlands (the center of Desolace).

The map here for Desolace is misleading if you are looking for primary spawns. There are a lot of points shown but these are interactions as secondary spawns to other battle pets. If you want primary spawns there are a few in Mauradon entrance tunnels (loads of Amethyst ones though) or Deepholm.

I have found that if you kill the "critters" in the orange wing, you WILL get battle pets to spawn in their place. This is one of the few battle pets that have a condition, and that is the stupid critters. I kept the hallway clear of critters and got my topaz.

I spent hours last night on the purple side of Mauradon and got 1 poor Topaz and 1 rare one that committed suicide with Stone Rush. Today I did the same and not a single one popped up. I finally went to the orange side, and yes, there are very few of them - but out of 7, 1 was poor and 6 were uncommon....Maybe it is anecdotal, but I had more success on the orange side . YMMV
