If you need a battle pet to handle aquatics, this is the pet you need, ~~it is expensive to get a rare since the quality is random every time learned, but~~ these are highly effective (aquatic attacks are weak against magical pets, yet flying type attacks are strong against aquatic type pets).

EDIT: Jade Owls are always Uncommon now, but well worth a battlestone.

Created by Jewelcrafters who obtained the Design: Jade Owl from a Treasures of the Vale. The treasures are a reward for doing select dailies for the Golden Lotus faction in The Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

I got this as an Uncommon and used a Flawless Magic Battle-Stone to make it Rare. I then levelled it up to level 20, but as it turned lvl 20, it went back to being Uncommon. I have made a GM ticket to see what's up with this.

GM couldn't help as the upgrade couldn't be verified :(

Is this pet supposed to scoot/hover along the ground? Or is it the type that flies alongside you? Mine just hovers and i'm wondering if this is a bug or intentional.

If you're in the market for one of these, I recommend looking first for one that's caged rather than buying the Jade Owl that jewelcrafters make. In other words, look in the "Battle Pets" section of the auction house rather than "Miscellaneous -> Companion Pets". I say this because the owl comes in three different breeds, and you can only determine which one you have from the caged pet, not from the crafted item. Since the owl can be fairly pricey, knowing the breed ahead of time will save you on repurchases.

You can use the tool above to determine the breed of a caged pet. There are also addons, such as Battle Pet BreedID, that display the breed of a caged pet automatically. The breed for the jade owl doesn't make that big of a difference, but if you're planning on using it a lot, it's nice to have a good one. As the pet tool indicates, the jade owl comes in breeds #8 (P/S), #10 (P/B) and #3 (B/B). I prefer P/S, but P/B isn't bad. Avoid B/B. Like many of the battle pets in World of Warcraft this pet shares a moveset with similar birds. There are in fact 17 pets that share the same six moves in three different permutations.

The Imperial Eagle Chick, Rustberg Gull, Sandy Petrel, Sea Gull, Tickbird Hatchling, and White Tickbird Hatchling all have the following moveset.

lv 10 Thrash
lv 15 Adrenaline Rush
lv 20 Lift-Off

The next set of birds is Blue Mini Jouster, Cockatiel, Dragonbone Hatchling, Fledgling Buzzard, Gold Mini Jouster, Green Wing Macaw, Hyacinth Macaw, Parrot, Polly, and Senegal. These ten keep the same six moves but rearrange the second, third and sixth. One major difference with this moveset is that it places your two big cooldown abilities on the same option.

Finally, the Jade Owl shares the same six moves in yet a third arrangement. This moveset swaps the second, third, fifth, and sixth moves from the first set. Essentially leaving you with the same moveset as the second. The only difference is of course in the leveling process as to which moves you have access to first. Once you have all six moves unlocked at 20 they are for all intents and purposes the same. The major difference here is that the Jade Owl is a magic pet.

Having aquatic pet problems? Here is your answer. It's a magic pet, so they don't hit it as hard, it sports flying abilities, which hit aquatic pets like a truck, and to cap it all, abilities like Dive and Pump will not be devastating like they are against your regular flying pets (which against the beasts of fable, will finish them off in 1 hit) thanks to the Magic pet racial. This means that if you do mistime your Lift-Off, the Aquatic pet still won't get the better of you.
