This and the level 20 version are pretty much the only decent things you can put in your trinket slots before Outland as a caster. Worth the time investment at lvl20 and lvl40 just for the stamina bonus, even if you're not interested in the spell penetration.

Increased penetration is awesome... it'll allow me to handle mobs of a greater level than normal, deal with those magic resistant mobs and generally get all the damage possible out of the spells at hand.
Let's face it if you're a mage and your spells are being resisted wholesale, essentially you're just a guy holding a stick.

Thanks for pointing that out... but it will help me against mobs who are resistant to the kind of spell I'm using on them so it's not a complete loss...

Spell penetration only works against targets with resistances, and will not reduce resistances below zero.

Otherwise, very few mobs and raid-level bosses have a substantial amount of resistance to overcome

nevertheless, this item seems useful for a fire mage.

It makes grinding higher level mobs a bit easier and its good for PvP overall a worthwhile investment.

Spell Penetration affects targets amount of Resistances vs. Your spells - and most mobs have 0 resistance bar certain special mobs. It doesn't do anything against the level difference of mobs you grind (there you need Spell Hit)

After patch 5.0.4 this item still has spell penetration stats, making it essentially useless outside of the stamina buff.

Patch 5.1 ~

Spell Penetration was removed and replaced by PvP Power.

This Item used to give 20 Spell Penetration but it was changed in 5.1 to give 20 Hit rating.

Not sure but I think you're approaching it wrong. Since vulnerability bonus on damage would add a percent of your damage (based on how negative the resistance actually is) it means that if you already have a lot of +damage this is a valid option. In the case of the new AV ring with a similar equip bonus: A percentage of all the damage added as vulnerability bonus is more than likely to be more than the +33 damage from the ring of spellpower. If it's not, that target had resistances - and this could have made a difference between a (partial) resist / hit. As for these trinkets, you can wear two (one for 10, and one for 20), but I rather wear my ToEP / ZHC combo.

There is a L60 version, but they haven't added it yet. It was listed on Test - reduces by 30.
With this & curse of elements on any non-flame mob in MC, I can pyroblast for 2000-2600.

Anyone doubts that, here's a screeny of my second highest Magmadar damage. I missed screenying the highest.

You can purchase the level 40 and level 20 trinkets and equip them both for a total of -30 to magical resistances on a target.

Extremely useful for the lock on banish duty in MC since they've recently buffed elemental/reaver resists in the lava packs (many more partial resists since 1.9)

I just did WSG for as long as it took to get this, so in case you want to, here's what it took to get from nuetral to friendly.
All of these numbers for around level 40, haven't done enough to see if anything changes as you level.
Every flag captured is 14rep, 3 captures and you win the match. Turning in the reward for winning is 50 more rep, if you lose you get 1/3 of the reward, so about 17rep.
max: 92, min 17. median 55.
Depends greatly on your sever if you faction will win all the time, or if you will never even get 1 flag, but assuming you lose as much as you win, and that games end early often enough, you will need 50 games. Best possible case would be 32games, worst would be 150, but you can do better then that :)

Note you'll also be getting honor for this, and you should easily get rank 3, which means a discount on pretty much everything. That alone makes this grinding worth it.

It's stupid but when a spell misses it actually says "resist" in white. When a spell is actually resisted it says "resist" in yellow.

Copying from somewhere:
"For non-binary spells, the 'to hit calculation' and the 'resist calculation' are entirely separate. Misses show up as white resists, while resists show up as yellow. No amount of +% to hit gear will change your yellow resist chance, and no amount of spell penetration will change your white resist chance."

In other words this item reduces your target's magic resistance to all types of spells by 20 (cannot be less than 0 though). It DOES NOT increase your damage done by spells. It decreases the chance of your spells being partially resisted, and hence increases the chance of your spells doing maximum damage. It also decreases the chance of a complete "yellow resist".

It DOES NOT decrease the chance of a complete "white resist", which is 4% when fighting a mob or player of the same level.

Ya, it is unique, but you can wield the level 20 version at the same time. Just not two of the level 40.

If you run up from Crossroads and to near the enterance to Ashenvale you'll see it. It's not in Ashenvale, still in the Barrens and just SouthWest of the gate to Ashenvale, in the mountains.

spell penetration does nothing but lower your target's resist.

no negatives (fixed in one of the EARLY patches)

no extra damage (that's what +SD does)

just makes it more likely your target will not resist your spells.

e.g.: i'm a level 42 mage, i play level 49 Battlegrounds....chances are, i come up against a level 49 i'll get completely pwnt because

1)they'll out-damage me
2)even if i DO get a spell off, they'll resist BECAUSE THEY'RE 7 LEVELS HIGHER THAN ME.

but, if i have the rune, the chance is MUCH MUCH less that they'll resist my spells, and chances are i'll actually stand a chance on killing them.

and since i DO have the rune, i DO stand a chance, and (sadly) i'm usually in the top 5 of the 15 in Arathi Basin for killing blows and usually in the top 7-8 for damage dealt.

u cant but 2 lvl 40 rune of perfections on BUT

YOU CAN EQUIPT THE LVL 20 and LVL 40 versions together. giving a total of 30SP

this is nice against pretty much every class in pvp because only like 2 races dont have some spell resistance passive for example BE have +5 to all resistances racialy

This is a really good trinket at 60 as a warlock. For PvP I would take this over Eye of the Beast simply because most of my time is spent DoTing people up and running from masses of rogues. Most people probably have a minor amount of SR, and all undead have 10 SR, so it is definatly better than Eye of the Beast for PvP. For PvE, I'm going to have to test it out with a DPS meter. 2% crit is really good for MC and AQ, especially since I can get chain shadowbolts off. Don't know about ZG though, since the mobs there die so damn quick.

As of 1.9, players cannot reduce target resistances below zero. However, at level 60, most players have at least some resistances to magic, so this would be a huge potential boost to damage spells, especially for mages who rely on fire and face PvE-geared opponents. Reducing a target's resistance from 20 to 0 is equivalent to a 5% boost in damage over a long period of time. (4 resistance = 1% damage mitigation. No I don't have the math to show you.)

The reason they changed it was ostensibly because Warlocks were using Curse of Shadows/Elements to obtain negative resistances on targets, which very rarely lead to monster crits.

its sold from the warsong gulch faction vendors. there are two different ones: a level 40 and a level 20 one. the level 20 one has +4 stamina and -10 resistances. it takes friendly reputation to get.

i couldn't actually buy this one, only the level 20 one. when i tried to buy this one it showed up as a question mark in my inventory. 3g60s for a question mark, woo hoo.
