You have to put all mobs/players in ONE of his storms. Doing for example four and four does not work.
If you die you will not get the achievement.

He spawns two adds at a time, do not let the first set get caught in his first attack or they will die. Once there are four up (or three, if one of the first pair died), avoid the ability until the last few seconds then have everyone get caught in it. The easiest way to do this is have 4 waves of adds spawn, tank the boss at the top of the stairs and then put the adds on the ramp. When the boss is incoming to the tank, he jumps off and lets all the adds eat the whirlwind. If any have died tanks or plate DPS can subsitute.

Make sure the healer does NOT get caught though, or anyone else caught (and the healer) will die.

This achievement is horrible bugged right now, tried all of the tactics above multiple times since I was "lucky" to get this instances selected a few times on random dungeon.

Tried so many different combination of 4+4, 6+4, 4+5+3.
In these combinations there was always at least 1 player.

Seems like you need to get exactly 8 in bladestorm, we did with 12 and achievement wasnt granted.

We finally got this after several attempts, and learned the following:

- Only NPCs that are naked seem to count. For some reason, NPCs that did not actually die to Blades of Light did not seem to count.
- More than 8 is fine (we did ours with about 14 or so - lost count)
- Players do not need to be caught

No bugs for us, here's what we did.

We tanked him at the first landing (top of stairs). We had a mage freeze the adds before he did the whirlwind, and dropped down leaving the adds to get caught. We DPS'ed them to about 50% so their armor was removed and they were low enough to die. We killed him after the 3rd whirlwind and got the achievement no problems.

Here is one strategy, confirmed that it work.

Pull the boss
Pop Heroism, Bloodlust or Time Warp and burst the boss to at least 30%
During this phase the tank must take the two adds
When Harlan is about to Blades of Light return to the entrance of the room
During this phase the tank must take the two new adds, at this time you got 4
Before Harlan reach you, the healer must jump into the pit and the rest of the group have to go near the flag next to the wall on the opposite ramp and wait to get caught by Blades of Light
Pop survival cooldowns
Get caught in Blades of Light
At this time you are 8 in a very short version of Harlan's Blades of Light and your healer is able to heal
Finish the boss before another Blades of Light

If another Blades of Light happen and just one player/mob get caught it will fail.

You don't need to kill the adds with Blades of Light, you just need to get 8 players/mobs caught by it, and then kill the boss, as the achievement says.

I feel it's important to note that you do not need to have 8 adds\players in the blades at once. In fact, it's impossible, only 6 adds\players can be in at once. So you can do the 2-4 adds before the first blades, and then the players+remaining adds in the final blades. If the players jump in on the return then they take minimal damage as they are only in the ability for a short amount of time.

Looks like it got hotfixed week of 10/9/12

You no longer need to be alive to receive credit. You should get 8 different targets to be in the whirlwind. The same NPC/player cannot be in the whirlwind twice and the whirlwind can only pick up a max of 6 targets at a time.

I'm like 90% sure this is bugged after the 'hot fix' I have tried for this achievement four days in a row trying multiple strategies and nothing has worked. He seems to only pick up 6 players or NPCs total. We had 8 NPCs and our whole group waiting for him to pick us up and he only picked up 5 npcs and one player. I will submit a GM ticket and post the response here.

You must have 8 players or NPCs caught at the same time. The achievement text will be updated in 5.1 to clarify this.

They do not have to die; getting caught is enough.

This achievement is absolutely unnacceptable to Blizzard's standards. I wonder how many people they have managed to piss of because this achievement has failed for them for several days.

The wording is totally wrong, and there are several theories as how to get this achievement. I just want to make sure everybody knows that the top rated comment is wrong.

We really need a definitive how-to for this achievement. There are several conflicting comments that are highly rated, and both the tooltip on wowhead and the achievement in-game are different.

Super easy if Tank knows what he's doing.

Simply tank upstairs where the door is, dps boss normally, pick up all the adds that spawns, keep dpsing normally , aoe or not it's fine. He'll jump down and spin, everyone do their own dodge maneuver, tank jump down right before the guy get up to the door, he'll scoop up all the trainees.

With the current gear he'll most likely do it twice before you can land a kill, if first time he didn't scoop enough, by the time he does it the second round you should have more than enough adds on tank's ass to guarantee this achieve once he's down.

I have been using Wowhead for years and everytime I found useful comments on whatever I need.

This achievement however has too many conflicting comments and strategies.

So facts after testing almost every strategy and this what works and what doesn't.

1- Boss can't pick up more than 6 , I know alot of people are saying that this boss will pick up 8 mobs in 1 swoop but that doesn't happen , We stood infront of him in 1 spot, full party(5 players) , when he had 3 adds on him and he passed through us and picked only 3 from the party and 2 were left untouched by his whirlwind.

2- The achievement can be done in more than one whirlwind , doesn't have to be all at once because he can't pick up everything at once.

And this is how we did it:
Our combination was 2 hunters , 1 Rogue , Monk tank and Disc priest healer(Me).
We tanked the boss where he was standing , we let 2 adds on the tank with the boss and then we placed Traps at the entrance to CC the 2 extra adds up there , when he started his whirlwind , the tank went up to the door and got caught in the Whirlwind along with the 2 adds that were frozen there , so that's 5 in first whirlwind.
We also made sure that his Enrage stacks were always dispelled by the Hunter.

Just make sure the tank or whever gets caught uses a Cooldown to help with healing , because even without his enrage or atleast it was low enrage stacks , he still hurts like hell.

After that kill what remains of the adds if anything survives , then we had 2 new adds come down to the boss and we froze the next 2 and did the same again and we let different player get caught just to make sure , we didn't want to risk it , but make sure that the player doesn't die (Rumors say that dead players don't get the achievement , one in our party didn't get his last time his group did it).
Btw I had to void shift(Switch health) with the dps that got caught because it was unhealable.

Then kill the boss and that's it.

I hope this helps somebody.

We did this today - or we thought we did. The Raid Achievement addon said we had completed the requirements, but alas we did not get the achievement.

We did NOT have eight picked up at the same time, so the addon is out-of-date on this achievement.

Did this today with my group, after 3 days of trying and as the last achievment for Glory of the Pandaria Hero. The comments above are wery confusing and probably outdated because some of the tactics didn't work. We did this this way:
1. Don't dps adds at all.
2. Drop boss to 50-30% hp before first blades.
3. Dodge first blades.
4. Very slowly dps boss, but don't kill him. (if some dps dies in second blades, it will be easier to end it w/o them).
5. During second blades all except a healer jump into blades near the flag, along with all adds (you should have 4-6 naked).
6. Kill the boss.
7. Enjoy your achievment.

Now, some facts:
- people who die in blades still get the credit for achievment.
- boss CAN take more than 6 adds/players in single blades, we had 10 or so.
- disable Raid Achievment- he said that we should get the achievment after gathering 8 adds (no players), and it was not true. Today he announced again, and was right. Turn off to avoid confusion.

Failed this achievement today despite the addon saying it was done, and us having 9 players/npcs in the whirlwind. Opened a GM ticket to see if they could help me out.

In some cases, we can check in the logs if you should have gotten the achievement. Unfortunately, in this case it is not possible to verify if you met the criteria of this achievement .

However the most common reason for this achievement failing is that the achievement will always look at the last Blades of Light done. If you successfully meet the criteria, but the boss does Blades of Light again and not enough NPCs and players are caught in it, it will ignore the successful attempt and only look at the last attempt.

So make sure you either meet the criteria on the LAST blades of light, or just have the boss health low when you do it so you can nuke him down fast after you have met the criteria.

So be sure to kill the boss straight after you've done the whirlwind thing. We hadn't really dps'd the boss, and it's possible he had just started a new whirlwind when we downed him (can't remember for sure).

I soloed this earlier as a 544 Prot Pally.

It really wasn't easy because towards the end he starts stacking that Berserker Rage which makes him hit like a truck after 60+ stacks.

Basically what I did was ignore the adds and focus as much damage on the boss, making sure as many adds get caught in his blades as possible. I kept EF up on me using 5 stacks of Bastion of Glory for maximum heal and tick healing.

He started to stack the debuff when he was at about 20-30% health which increased my DPS a load due to Vengeance.

When he was on 12% health he luckily did a blades (I had just Guardian-ed and LoH-ed myself and was taking hits which were nearly my full life pool) which I dodged (he does the blades exceptionally fast when he has the rage stacks!) and then as he came back down dumped myself and the adds into the blades just as he was finishing and luckily it grabbed us all in.

I know the achievement says in one simultaneous blades, but I swear I didn't have eight in there on the last blades, but definitely had eight on another blades at some point.

Basically, tank him in the light blue circle, run to the green as he is casting Blades and then fall back into the circle when the boss is near the red circle hopefully causing most of the adds to be sucked into his blades.
When he is coming back down hide in one of the dark blue circles to avoid being swept by his blades causing unnecessary life loss.

I wouldn't recommend this as a viable strategy, but two manning this should be so easy if you bring along a DPS who can dodge the Blades effectively.

Soloed on 2nd try. My observations:

Near enrage, he hit for 150k melee on brewmaster with around 55-60 stacks
At enrage, his blades of Light activated and he moved very fast. I had him low enough to not experience a melee at this point.
Adds spawn much more often near/during enrage timer enough that I had more than 8 spawn between Blades of Light casts
During this last Blades, he removed the gear of all 9 living adds, but only picked up 8

This appears to me that he caps out at 8 in the whirl, but can still damage others. My first attempt with 8, I ran through him just in case I miscounted and it caused the damage without picking me up (and continued to do so after he was away from me). I wiped it there to switch to better talents for healing.
