Mistweaver Monk Healer Rotation Guide - MoP Classic (Phase 5)

How Mistweaver Monk Plays

Mistweaver Monks are a new specialization available in Mists of Pandaria Classic, bringing a new way to heal our allies' health bars! Mistweaver Monks are a melee-based healing specialization and are considered melee for the targeting of encounter abilities. As such, it is perfectly safe to stand in melee range of enemies, without risk of bringing unexpected mechanics in and causing confusion or wiping the group. Your choice of spells will change based on the type of content you're doing, but for the most part, you're going to be following similar priorities:

Resource Management
Mistweaver Monks have both Mana and Chi as resources to spend on our damage and healing abilities, with Mana Tea as the bridge between them. The basic flow of managing these is to spend Mana on abilities that generate Chi and then use Chi for your more powerful damaging and healing abilities. Spending Chi generates stacks of Brewing: Mana Tea, which can then be used during downtime to restore your Mana bar. Remember that any Chi over your cap is lost, and any stacks of Brewing: Mana Tea over twenty are similarly wasted.

Keep Important Abilities on Cooldown
Mistweaver Monks have a plethora of abilities we want to be constantly using. Most of these help to ensure we maintain a steady and predictable source of Chi for upcoming healing. Renewing Mist and Expel Harm are two of our most important abilities, and we need to make sure that we don't lose any casts of these over the course of an encounter. Losing casts means losing easy Chi, which means we start losing out on potential throughput.

Manage and Optimize Your Cooldowns
Mistweavers have an impactful raid-wide healing cooldown in Revival and also plenty of smaller cooldowns that impact our own healing. Learning when to use these abilities and optimizing them over the duration of an encounter will help to maximize your throughput.

Be Smart About Your Buffs
Mistweavers have a couple of buffs to track to ensure we're getting the most out of our abilities. Buffs like Tiger Power and Serpent's Zeal help our downtime healing through Eminence. Coming out of your downtime healing, Vital Mists should also be used while you have it.

Cast Uplift—using Thunder Focus Tea if it's available to refresh your active Renewing Mist buffs—when you have two or more Chi. This will heal your allies that have Renewing Mist active on them.

Generate Chi by casting Renewing Mist and Expel Harm on cooldown.

Single-Target Healing PrioritiesSurging Mist

Make sure Summon Jade Serpent Statue is in a place where allies will be healed by Soothing Mist.

Use Healing Sphere and place the reticle underneath your target and place multiple of these healing spheres underneath them to quickly heal them from a burst of damage.

If the damage is intense, channel Soothing Mist on your priority target, spending Chi on Enveloping Mist to place a strong periodic healing effect on them that also increases the healing of Soothing Mist as you channel it.

Generate Chi by casting Renewing Mist and Expel Harm on cooldown.

Cast Surging Mist through your Soothing Mist channel to generate additional Chi and heal them instantly. Use Thunder Focus Tea on this ability if you won't need to refresh your Renewing Mist buffs when you need to pivot to group healing.

Downtime PrioritiesEminence

Make sure Summon Jade Serpent Statue is in a place where allies will be able to benefit from its Eminence (Statue).

Channel Mana Tea until you have a comfortable amount of mana restored.

Spend Chi on Tiger Palm when you have Muscle Memory and do not have the Tiger Power buff.

Spend Chi on Blackout Kick when you have Muscle Memory and do not have the Serpent's Zeal buff.

Spend Chi on Blackout Kick when you have Muscle Memory and have extra Chi. It deals slightly more damage than Tiger Palm but does less damage per Chi.

Spend Chi on Tiger Palm when you have Muscle Memory.

Cast Surging Mist when you have 5 stacks of Vital Mists to generate more Chi for free.

Cast Renewing Mist and Expel Harm to generate extra Chi as their cooldowns allow and to prepare for incoming group damage.

Cast Jab to generate Chi and to gain Muscle Memory.

Cast Surging Mist with any remaining stacks of Vital Mists as you transition into any other healing scenario, but only if you're not at maximum Chi.

Cooldown Usage for Mistweaver Monks Healing Cooldowns

Revival is our major raid-wide cooldown. It instantly heals all of our allies within range for a burst of healing and clears them of all harmful Magic, Poison, and Disease debuffs. During encounters where these types of effects are present, be sure that dispelling these effects won't have unintended consequences because of mechanics tied to them.

Life Cocoon is our external defensive ability. It places a relatively large absorb shield on an ally and increases the periodic healing from all sources while the shield remains. Being able to place an absorb shield this large on a target gives it more versatility than other healer specializations' external defensive abilities, as this can be used preemptively, stacking with damage reduction effects a player may have active, or used as a reaction to allies receiving damage. In either case, the full value of the absorb shield is present and is preventing your targeted ally from receiving damage while healers help to stabilize them.

Summon Jade Serpent Statue has a relatively long cooldown, and you need to position it so that allies are always within 20 yards for its passive increase to our healing.

Thunder Focus Tea use-cases were mentioned in the relevant healing scenarios above, but you'll want to use it with Uplift when your group needs healing, making sure to time it so that a recently-cast Renewing Mist has split all of its buffs to players. Using it on Surging Mist can help save a player in a dangerous situation, but this use-case is generally not as common as using it on Uplift.

Grapple Weapon is a niche ability that will see limited use in PvE encounters, but these few encounters will see it used on cooldown for a small healing boost through Grapple Weapon: Healer Upgrade!.

Chi Brew should be used when you need the Chi for more healing than your maximum Chi would otherwise allow. Each stack of Mana Tea it generates has its own chance to generate another, based on your Critical Strike chance.

Invoke Xuen, the White Tiger is a cooldown that deals damage to enemies that is converted to healing through Eminence. The healing he does is respectable, and his long duration can help cover multiple damaging events during an encounter. Work out the most dangerous moments of each fight and consider using Xuen there. If there are no healing moments you are worried about, use it on cooldown for his powerful damage, preferably when people are injurred.

Defensive Abilities

Dampen Harm should be used whenever a burst of damage is coming up that will reach its threshold. This has good value for reducing the damage of one such hit, and it is even better if you can get damage reduction from additional attacks within its long duration.

Diffuse Magic should be used during an incoming burst of Magic-based damage. The debuff-reversal effect can largely be ignored in PvE encounters.

Fortifying Brew is a standard defensive that also has a limited damage application, as the increase to our health also increases the threshold that Touch of Death can be used to kill enemies.

Zen Meditation can be used to massively reduce incoming damage to yourself, as well as some from nearby allies. This is a channel that breaks when you start moving, so be careful that you don't accidentally end it prematurely.

Entangling Roots is the spell we receive when a Druid links to us through Symbiosis. It's incredibly unlikely we'll be their target, as the abilities the Druid receives in return—Grapple Weapon for Balance, Clash for Feral, Elusive Brew for Guardian, and Fortifying Brew for Restoration—are generally more situational and niche than other options available to them. If you do have access to this ability, then you have a ranged option to root enemies in addition to the melee-range root in Disable.
