You can find the black dragonkin at 39.3, 66.1 (Den of Flame) and 45.5, 66.4 (Stonemaul Ruins). Kill them and use the totem on their corpse to get an essence.

Make sure you have bag space before using the totem, or you will not get the quest item from that kill.

The totem is currently bugged, if there are two corpses in range it "uses" both but only gives you one essense. Make sure to give yourself some distance between corpses.

The first comment is misleading. The Firemane dragonkin are all over Stonemaul Ruins, and all through the Den of Flames, and nothing in their description is "black." Just kill firemanes and use the totem before you try to skin them!

This quest is ridiculous hard ....
As a fire mage.

I am level 39 now.. and they resist 50% of the damage...
Woo.. 222 pyro's.

You can use your frost spells, and won't be resisted and stuff.. but as soon as you get aggro of 2 mobs, you are dead meat.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the aura interrupts as well.. not frost specced is long frostbolt casts = dead :/

Be sure to go inside the cave and pick up the Stonemaul Banner for Banner of the Stonemaul quest and kill Firemanes on the way while using Brogg's totem on their dead bodies
Mobs are 38-41 about

The next quest is Spirits of Stonemaul Hold

The Den of Flame worked well for me. Combined it with the banner quest. You have to target the corpse twice, once to loot and once for the totem. The Den of Flame is the first left turn north of Mudsprocket.

if your a skinner then you'll take a while, i'm doing this at this very moment and alternate skinning and then forgetting i have to use the totem first

you can skin after the totem but not totem after skinning

the quest is not easy and its not hard but i finished it as a lvl 38 paladin i had a fire resistance ring so there fire nova didn't affect me that much and all i do is seal of comand + judge of crusader and boom he is dead and for the skinners it will take much lol cuz u guys have to make totem and then skin so patience :D good hunting have fun

just to be clear, you can use the totem on ANY of the firemanes, though the totem says only Ash Tails, including the named lvl 40 in the back of the cave. easily done as a 40 arms warrior

Just soloed this no problem as a Level 40 kitty Druid.

Stealth in, kill mob, use totem, skin (if neccessary). Rinse and repeat.

Make sure to grab the Stonemaul Banner as well in the back of the cave.

slight problem on this quest if you have 2 dragon king dead in the same place and you target the totem at one of them it will return you one essence but it wont let you get it for the other one besides it so drag them apart when they die.

Fun fact.. you can continue to use the totem on the corpses and receive the essences, although they only stack in 10s.

The stuff that u gotta kill for this is hell for a caster...as an ele shaman i died a couple times on 1v1 mobs same lv as me, so try to use instant casts as much as possible. i had NO trouble at all on my rogue killing these, theyre just kinda hard for casters cause they attack fast

Dwarf warrior, lvl 45, I completed it with no problem what so ever. Even when I ventured into the cave for 3 more beasts and was tackled by two at once they didn't even take me down 1/4.
Kill them, select the beast, then activate the essence remover tool much like unlocking a box, if a beast hits you it will interupt the transmission.

Level 41 Shaman (Enhanced). This was boringly easy. Target enemy, hit stormstrike, lightning shield, earth shock, couple of hits with dual wield with windfury and down they fell. Even killed three at once without fuss..... And yes, agree go and get Stonemaul banner at the same time. You can single out these guys quite easily so it's easy to solo.

And yes, careful clicking because if you're a skinner and skin first you can use the totem on them. So kill, totem, loot and skin is the order.

I found this quest REALLY hard as a skinner ; Must've killed about 100 and used the totem only on about 10% of them before my skinning instincts made me skin the corpse. :(

The Firemane Scalebanes interrupt casting when they get near death(around 20 or 30%), as a 39 Elemental shaman is wasn't that hard though. Just something to keep in mind.

i have try to get the essence, i have only been able to get two, not sure what the problem is, have kill over 30, have ask for help from a gm, but they are backup. i am a d hunter,45 no problem killing them. cant get the essence its starts an wont completed.

You can do this Quest while searching for the Ogre bones, or killing in the Den of Flame - when killed, select a dragonkins corpse and use the totem, you can use the totem several times on the same corpse, till it vanishes...

I dislike this quest because done it so many times with skinner toon and I always forget to use the totem and just skin away. Then swear to totem next one and I repeat same thing again. Just lovely...
