Story of Lothraxion, the Holy Nathrezim - Lore Spotlight with Nobbel87

With the Dreadlords in the spotlight with Patch 9.1 Shadowlands, we're highlighting Nobbel's video on Lothraxion, a holy Nathrezim who served as the High Commander of the Grand Army of the Light in Legion.
Note: most of this post describes Legion and Shadowlands 9.0 lore, but later in the article does discuss specific 9.1 quest spoilers.
Lothraxion in Legion
Aside from Lothraxion, all Nathrezim we faced in Legion served the Burning Legion. However, in the short story
A Thousand Years of War
, we learned that when Lothraxion was defeated by Locus-Walker, he was spared and allowed to return to life to serve a unique destiny.
At the time, Lothraxion served as a symbol that redemption was possible for all with the power of the Light, appearing as a friendly NPC that assisted players in-game, most notably in the Paladin and Priest campaign where he saved Netherlight Temple (

). Here, he arrived at a critical moment with reinforcements to help the players defeat fellow nathrezim Balnazzar, later pledging support to the Order of the Silver Hand and even becoming a Paladin follower (

I serve High Exarch Turalyon and Lady Alleria Windrunner. When the Legion turned its armies toward Azeroth, I was sent here to help protect it.
How I got to Niskara is a tale for another time, but had it not been for you, I would still be Balnazzar's prisoner.
Now, I can fulfill my original mission. Let me fight for you. Together, we will drive back the Burning Legion!

Lothraxion in A Thousand Years of War
Previously in the short story
A Thousand Years of War
, Lothraxion helped Turalyon embrace the light and even tried to save Alleria from Xe'ra's wrath when she embraced the Void. Nobbel provides a quick summary of the Lothraxion-related lore from this short story, which fills in the blanks on what happened to Alleria and Turalyon after they were presumed dead on Outland:
Xe’ra foresaw two bright lights that would be critical for their mission to succeed and so Lothraxion was send out to make contact with Alleria and Turalyon right after they had shut down the Dark Portal and Draenor transformed into Outland as we know it today. He told them about their war across the stars, the great evil that lurks in the Twisting Nether.
He even managed to teach Turalyon how to truly dive into the powers of the Light as Lothraxion had a few millennia more experience than him. The human would go through a presumed-to-be similar ritual as Lothraxion had with Xe’ra, but the path of the Light would not be the course his beloved Alleria Windrunner would follow. Instead she embraced the shadows, despite Lothraxion advising her to stay away from it and its maddening whispers--yet at the same time he does inform her about the Locus-Walker, a powerful master of the void while, as far as the Nathrezim knew, completely free of its grasp.
The Locus-Walker had seen that there was a unique destiny for Lothraxion and when ultimately Alleria was trained in the ways of the Void, she too was told to have a unique destiny waiting for her. Those Void powers saved the life of her beloved Turalyon and close friend Lothraxion, but as expected, Xe’ra was pissed at the darkness that surrounded her.

However, after reading

in Shadowlands, Lothraxion may have been serving a different master. This book is a field report from undercover agents reporting to their master, and it appears the Nathrezim have been infiltrating all cosmic forces to sow chaos. Here, we highlight the page about the Light:
Similar to the titans, the naaru and their keepers are singular in purpose. Their adherence to a linear path is an obvious shortcoming.
They savor nothing more than being proved right, so if they believe they have converted one of us to their precious Light, they will trust that agent implicitly.
We've discussed this book extensively, and even have a video collab with Nobbel which you can check out below, so we'll just focus on the Light angle for now instead of recapping the whole thing.
This next part of the article contains spoilers for 9.1.
Enemy Infiltration Recap
In Patch 9.1, several theories about the Nathrezim are seemingly-confirmed (although, one can never be sure with all the recent twists in Warcraft lore). The Nathrezim are not sent to the Twisting Nether, but instead originated from Shadowlands. Their true master is Sire Denathrius, who is in league with the Jailer. This explains why the Dreadlords acquired Frostmourne and the Helm of Domination, a link that previously seemed confusing. They were bringing the artifacts to Azeroth as part of the Jailer's plan, while also infiltrating the Burning Legion.

Lothraxion's True Motivations
With this in mind, Lothraxion is likely the agent in

who pretended to be converted to the Light. Now, while Lothraxion did help us save Netherlight Temple and defeat the Burning Legion, a closer look reveals that he may have created discord that will play out in future expansions. Lothraxion could have influenced Xe'ra to save Illidan, which culminated in Shadows of Argus with the destruction of both Xe'ra and the Burning Legion. He also empowered Turalyon to embrace the Light--but Turalyon is now in charge of the Alliance with Anduin's absence, and hungry for conflict. Similarly, he helped Alleria learn about the Void, and now she is consumed by whispers and uses her powers questionably in the novel
Shadows Rising
to torture the Horde for information. A united Azeroth is powerful against cosmic threats, and while the Alliance and Horde remain in a truce following the Fourth War, Alleria and Turalyon could push for conflict once more and weaken Azeroth.

As Nobbel summarizes:
Imagine for a moment that the Jailer is succesful and able to crawl his way not only out of the Maw but also that rift in the sky--moving his forces from the realm of death into the physical world, Azeroth. Right now as far as we’re aware, peace stands between the Alliance and the Horde. The Old Gods learned pretty quickly that a united Azeroth was near-impossible to defeat. The same lesson was learned by the Burning Legion.
Lothraxion and the other dreadlords have managed to observe, manipulate and control others for quite a while now. A few friendly whispers and words of advice from his old friend Lothraxion might push Turalyon into taking hostile action and shatter what’s already fragile, weakening our defenses and helping the Jailer's plans further.
At the time of writing this post, Lothraxion has not been seen in Shadowlands, but we hope to learn more about his fate in a future patch or expansion.
