Mistweaver Monk: First Impression of the New Monk Talent Trees in Dragonflight

With the reveal of the Dragonflight Monk talent trees, our Mistweaver Monk writer Anomoly provides initial reactions and thoughts on this revamped system. We break down the Mistweaver Monk talent trees, discussing the new talents and providing some sample builds. Join us as we predict how this class could play in Dragonflight!

Monks and Mistweavers finally received their updated talent trees on Dragonflight Alpha and there is a long of information to work through. The initial impression is that both the Class and Spec tress are in a great place to start and provide a great starting point for feedback.
Monk Dragonflight Class Talent Tree
With Blizzard revamping the talent tree system in Dragonflight, we now have two talent trees with interconnected nodes to populate as we level. Gone is the simple 7 tier system with 3 options per tier. We now have a fully fleshed out tree with branching paths and multiple options across the board. The provides a area of customization and choice we haven't seen in a few expansions now.
For the Monk Class tree, this is meant to represent talents that describe our class and it does a great job at that, except for a few key areas, where either pathing or just ability node selection is poor. The overall tree is good and exciting as you work through it.
Monk Dragonflight Talents - What's New
The Monk Class Tree doesn't contain a large number of new abilities, but it does open up some new options for Mistweavers to take some interesting abilities. Some of the highlights of these new talents are:
2 point talent is just a 40% buff to our current
power. It introduces the current aura buff Windwalker and Brewmaster have to
and allow us to select it. Then
instant cast. This allows
to be casted while moving and repositioning. Overall very good buffs to
in a portion of the class tree where you have plenty of points to spare.
- And it's back! We have an interrupt. Enough said. Its a melee interrupt, which allows us to now help in both raids and Mythic+ with any particularly nasty casts. This is great!
- We have access to both of these defensive spells. While we do lose Fortifying Brew, we gain two overall better options.
is just adding back in Rank 2 of our current
, we also gain access to
's cooldown by 2 minutes. This is a great set of nodes which basically give us the ability to talent into some priority damage for mobs. This could specific adds on a raid encounter, or mobs in a Mythic+ environment that need to die ASAP. Very nice set of additional utility through a spec traditionally seen only with Windwalker.
- Two new raid buffs allow us to bring something more than just
. These provide either 2%/4% Leech or 2%/4% Avoidance to raid or party members around us. In any progression scenario, both of these should be taken. We will have enough points to pick both of these up easily. The only issue will be the range of the buffs, however, we should be able to maintain this 100% on melee without issue.
- This provides some additional mobility to get out and then back into position or vise versa. The more interesting part of this ability is it's interaction with
. With it buffing
by 70%, this is a large healing increase across the raid. I will speak about this later in the article, but with the amount of potential
's we will have on the raid, a 70% increase to the healing they will do is massive.
While the above are great talents, the Class tree isn't without issue. There are a number of just lackluster options, along with a few interesting pathing sections, that I think can be cleaned up. With that in mind, below are some talents that I think deserve from additional love or changes in the new few Dragonflight builds:
- In the current tree, if we wanted to talent into
, we need to invest 2 points into
and then 2 points into both
and the choice node after this, where we can reduce it's cooldown to 4 minutes. At 4 minutes,
is not a cooldown we would want to invest 4 points into. Also, while we can move into
, our only other option is through Expel Harm, which is never going to be taken by Mistweavers. It just locks us into too many points for too little gain.
on a Choice Node - For Mistweaver Monks at least this is an easy choice. We will always take
. I know that our other specs may swap between the two based on the type of fight, this option for us is clearly not a choice at all.
- In the last, blue post we learned that
is getting redesigned, it originally interacted with
just increases healing taken by 2%. While neither of these are particularly exciting options, they do sit in a weird place in our tree. The only path to it is through Roll, which adds another charge of
. We can already talent into Celerity later on in the tree, and 3 rolls will typically be overkill from a movement perspective. There are also no interesting nodes beyond Roll, which make going this path less desirable. This entire upper left section of the tree needs some work.
Final Two Rows of the Class Tree - The final two rows contain both our capstone abilities, and a Healing, Damage, or Damage Taken buff. With the second to last row, these to provide additional healing, damage, or defensive bonuses. They are not exactly amazing, but they do offer some level of power increase. Beyond these we are left to choose from 3 statues. These are
. Thematically these are very cool in terms of a healing, damage, and tanking option. In terms of practice, more than likely only
will see any regular play.
potentially has some niche applications, but those would more than likely be around doing some weird Mythic+ shenanigans.
- I broke out this statue from the above just to highlight the issues here. This statue requires a 2 point investment from any non healer spec, as they would need to talent into Soothing Mist. For Mistweaver specifically, the statue is just bad. Weak healing, and it is triggered by a spell we rarely use in any content. This needs another look. Any gameplay centered around
really needs a full rework. The current model of maintaining an 8 second buff on a single target is both tedious and provides little actual healing gain. In my eyes, this is basically a blank box in terms of a talent we would ever seriously consider in its current form.
Monk Class Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
Overall the class tree is good. It provides access to a host of different defensive options for Mistweaver Monks, and also allows you to add in some additional utility through nodes like
. There are still a number of areas that could use some work, and the capstones themselves are nothing special, but the core of the tree is very good.
As an example, the below tree would be a solid start for any content.
There are some minor swaps you can make, such as
, but all in all this would be a good place to start your class tree. We may also want to take
in terms of having priority damage on specific mobs in any content.

Mistweaver Dragonflight Talents - What’s New?
The Mistweaver Spec tree is full of both recent talents from the past few expansions, along with a surprising number of brand new options. Blizzard has done an excellent job with the tree, providing a number of interesting choices with how to work your way through the tree. The brand new options enable a particularly interesting new playstyle also.
- Blizzard has added a choice node around
. You are choosing what type of dispel you would like to pair with your
. The baseline still provides Magic dispel, while
changes that to Disease and Poison.
is also usable while stunned. This is an excellent change, as Mistweavers do suffer from not being able to use
in certain portions of a fight, such as the final phase of Sylvanas or during the Fated Dispel affix. This is an excellent choice node.
- A trio of old Azerite traits appears. These were all great traits at the time and are solid choices within our tree. They also are all within key areas of our tree and are easily reached. With the tree itself focusing a bit more on casting
will be a solid amount of throughput on any target taking damage.
offers us some secondary stat boosts. We will generally be using
, but this does give you options for targeted stat boosts at specific times.
- Another trio of synergy talents that provide a number of different ways to spread both
across the raid.
will add a random
with a 3 / 6 second duration after using
being a common filler spell, you will be spreading a large number of
's on the raid. In addition,
provides a 10% at a
duplicating itself whenever you cast
jumps to a new target. Expect to see this also boost the number of active
on the raid. Finally,
a 5% / 10% chance to proc an
with 2 second duration. Giving your
healing a solid boost on certain targets. This trio of talents provides a really exciting gameplay opportunity going into Dragonflight. We can also use these high periods of
on the raid along with Cloud Focus to really push a fairly large amount of healing.
- One of our capstone choice nodes. Both of these are returning Legion legendary powers. In either case, while
does grant a random
buff, after using
, it does suffer from just being random. You may get a proc you just cannot us or do not need in the instant.
healing amplification across the group. This may potentially be a solid choice with the amount of
casts we look to be throwing out in Dragonflight, however, it does suffer in where it is placed in the tree. It is awkward to spec into currently.
- Returning for Dragonflight is
, which is a previous talent choice for Mistweaver Monks. This works by doing healing to and damage around a target that has enemies near them. This was a staple dungeon talent and will potentially return in Dragonflight. It's centrally located in the tree so it is relatively easy to spec into. There is a choice node beyond
that provides buffs directly to
a second time as reduced effectiveness if both
are active on the target. The other choice,
, increases the healing and damage of
heals. Each of these give a choice based on if you are playing around
or not. Overall a compelling option in the center of our tree.
While the majority of the tree is full of options and interesting talents, there are a few key areas of our tree that have what I feel are some lackluster options. Some of this stems from the talents being weak or undesirable, but also the center of our tree, with the capstones available, provide just too much power in both raids and Mythic+. Some of these talents include:
stacks a buff to
each time you heal with
increases heal over time effects on your
target. While these may be more PvP focused talents, they are located on the left hand side of our tree and gate access to
is more of a PvE ability and the talents above it are seemingly more PvP focused. It does create some tension in terms of talent choices, but honestly, you end up just completely ignoring this side of the tree.
- The entire lower right hand side of our tree is dedicated to
. Leaving Shadowlands, we lose many of the systems that buffed
and made it a choice in the previous expansion. We lose the conduit and the buff to the conduit, along with our Soulbinds. Without these,
is not very strong compared to your other talent choices. Along with this, to get to the capstone choice node of
, we must talent into
. Mastery is not a great stat for Mistweavers in general, so talenting into something that randomly buffs said stat just feels bad. Also, as above, this is competing with an extremely strong center of our tree, which hurts this even more.
as a capstone makes zero sense. I generally struggle to find a use for this talent is really any content out currently. It is low impact, does not interact with another of our kit beyond
and is generally a boring buff for a max tier talent. Centering a capstone around boosting an 8 second channeled heal is just bad. The healing game today is just too quick, to take time out and just slowly channel a trickle of healing into a random second target. And while I am using
as a jumping off point for this, I think the larger issue is with
itself. The current use of it centers around having talented into
for the purpose of not boosting our single target healing, but boosting our healing to
targets. Other than this talent synergy,
is currently and will in the future rarely be cast. My point is that I think
needs to be redesigned away from being just a channel and potentially towards being a buff or something only put out by
. Remove the player channel component and allow it to boost player healing or provide a level of random healing to a specific target. Anything other than requiring us to channel for 8 seconds, or even trigger it every 8 seconds.
These are really just the highlights of what I consider a fairly well laid out tree.
Mistweaver Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
As you can see by the difference in content in the above two bulleted sections, the Mistweaver tree is looking very nice going into Dragonflight. The tree provides a few choices in terms of gameplay that do not seem dead on arrival. The concerns I do have deal with the placement of certain talents and not with the overall direction or structure of the tree. Blizzard has done a very good job at providing some interesting choices in our talent tree and allowing two or more playstyles to exist.
In terms of some example builds, the below build centers on replicating as many
as possible, and once raid damage comes out, using
to push as much healing as possible.
Another potential option is to utilize
to push as much damage and healing as possible, and utilize the healing of Ancient Teachings of the Monastery to handle the maintenance healing needed. I can see this being a potential Mythic+ focused build, depending on the healing requirements in Dragonflight Mythic+.
I would take the above example with a grain of salt currently, as these haven't been fully tested, but they do provide some examples that look to be viable in their current state.
Mistweaver Monk Dragonflight Talents for Raiding - How Strong is It?
All I can say is, WOW! I am extremely excited about the trees in their current form.
There are a ton of new talents coming in Dragonflight that honestly seem very cool. The playstyle around working to blanket the raid in
and then use those to dish out massive healing brings me back to Warlords of Draenor style Mistweaver. This is really exciting from my perspective.
We also have some potential other options where we really get to focus on healing through damage and some specific talent setups. Both of these options should allow us some versatility in our play throughout Dragonflight. And while the tree is generally strong and has a lot of potential, there are still some problem areas, particularly around
, outside of
I think if Blizzard can rework the interactions with
, I think Mistweaver is looking very strong in Dragonflight. For now though, I will say I am ready to experiment with all the different talent builds as we move through beta and into launch.
