What does it really matter?
Wowhead isn't sinister, isn't doing anything with your credit cards, isn't exploiting your e-mail address, isn't brainwashing you or restricting your access, and isn't making you pay for an excellent database that gets better and better every day.
Who cares who it's owned by?

Chill down people, I just removed half a page of hate replies from randoms. No hate no delete.
I'll let Malgayne answer when he's back. Until then, no one here is stealing your credit cards or killing your wives and children -- so keep it cool.
Moved to Site Feedback.

As long as there exists the ability to transfer goods or currency between arbitrary characters in an MMO, there will always be someone trying to make real-world bank for virtual-world time, goods or currency. Game makers can attempt to combat it, make it "illegal", embrace it or ignore it.
To me, it seems that Blizzard has a fair balance between overbearing aggression and aloofness -- I know plenty of people who have purchased gold and can't think of one who has been banned. However, they continue to track down and ban thousands of accounts for association with the RMT industry. I think that if a player doesn't want to support the RMT industry, they should not buy gold, goods or services. Worrying about a possible association between a site that has proven, time and again, its incredible prowess in providing services that many of us couldn't imagine going without and a company engaging in RMT who might be profiting from advertising revenue from said site is just creating gray hairs and fomenting FUD.

/sigh. Every time an article gets written about IGE, it gets linked on the front page of incgamers, Curse, and every other website that wants to be the next Wowhead.
The article that Sko linked is about right. The company named "Affinity Media" was once the company named "IGE". It's important to distinguish between the gold selling business and the holding company. IGE was a holding company, IGE US LLC was a gold selling business. IGE provided overall direction, IGE US LLC actually sold gold. The only reason IGE existed was because they also owned other businesses in China and Korea, including a content network in China (from what I understand, IGE is/was a respected name over there), and a p2p Sparter-style auction platform in Korea, which was built specifically with the approval of game publishers. These were separate businesses from the gold-farming business, but they were owned by the same holding company, "IGE".
The holding company renamed itself Affinity Media. The gold-farming business remained "IGE US LLC". This means that Affinity Media, when it appears on court documents, will say "IGE n/k/a (now known as) Affinity Media".
"IGE US LLC" sold off all its assets to Atlas, but retained certain things (like the name IGE US LLC, the liability for any debts that IGE US LLC had incurred, etc). They renamed IGE US LLC to Affinity Media Holdings, LLC. Affinity Media Holdings LLC is a sub-company, owned by Affinity Media, which only exists for the purpose of assuming liability.
Steven Crews is making some assumptions about some random court documents. He didn't even spell the company president's name right. Everybody is really excited about "exposing the terrible corruption within the ZAM Network" etc. But frankly, every association between IGE's gold selling business and Affinity Media in the last year has been terrible. It was dragging down the ZAM Network content business (which was by far the more successful business) by association, it was causing all sorts of possible legal liabilities, and it was losing market share to smaller, Chinese based competitors.
I don't doubt that Affinity Media had some sleazy people in it at one point. But there's been a lot of turnover in the past year, and I've met every employee of the ZAM Network myself--The accounting and finance teams, the CFO, the new CEO, the President, the ad sales staff, as well as Thott, Illia, Allakhazam, Darqflame, Draknorr, and I like them all.

...was allegedly sold in April 2007 of this year.
As opposed to April 2007 of some other year? =)

Unless anyone thinks it's dishonest, I'm going to add a "?" to the title of this thread. I'd rather not just have it sitting there announcing "Wowhead is owned by IGE" at the top of our own forum. :)

Well, it might have happened four thousand years ago. :)
