I don't see what morality has to do with it. They made a mistake on their end. No one's being hurt by the mistake. I don't see any problem with keeping the money.

If you go to an ATM and withdraw 20 bucks and get 40... that's not free money. If you take it and spend it, you can be charged with theft.
Just because you didn't cause the mistake doesn't mean you're absolved from any form of punishment.
OP did the right thing and deserves respect for being honest and having some integrity.
How does doing Blizzard's bookkeeping for them make you honest?

The difference between this and the ATM analogy is that WoW gold is a virtual currency, and we can assume that GMs have access to an unlimited supply of it. GMs
regularly
give back more than was taken when someone's account gets hacked. This is not a new thing. If they're able to see a snapshot of what you had in your bags a week ago, then assume they fully know what they're doing when they give you more than you previously had. Since they're masters of a virtual world, they can conjure up pretty much anything they want, and that includes currency.
All they really want is a positive review on their survey and you really shouldn't feel guilty if you end up having your character restored with a few thousand extra gold or a couple dozen stacks of ore in your bags.
But as I'd said earlier in this thread, apply your honesty to real life and make the world a better place, because if that were
real
money then it would belong to someone else

Because he did not earn that gold. Sure, its just a database entry and there is no real "harm" in it... but it wasn't his all the same. He is being honest by reporting that he did not have it to begin with.
How is that not honesty?
Because he is under no obligation to tell anyone. Show me exactly where it states that a player has to report any gold a GM gives them?

Just because he's under no obligation doesn't make it any less honest. GMs are under no obligation to restore your hacked accounts, but they do so and usually are very friendly about it. Wouldn't it be good to return the courtesy when they may make a mistake?
They restore your account because they don't want to lose a couple thousand paying customers a week...
It's called Business 101.
And it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

Clearly you're missing the point. I'm speaking on honesty and integrity. You mentioned that he's under no obligation to report the extra money. I pointed out that technically GMs aren't under any obligation to restore your account, but they do.
Obligation has nothing to do with being honest. No where are you obligated to be honest. Ethics aren't a hard set of rules. Doing the right thing is always better than not.
No, clearly you're missing the point. Why does blizzard restore accounts? To make money. Why would someone return virtual currency after it was given them? Definitely not to make money. They have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
Honestly is following the contract you signed with Blizzard. If returning gold given to you by a GM is not part of that contract, then returning it doesn't make you honest. You're doing it to feel good about yourself. That's not honesty.

3. founded on the fundamental principles of right conduct rather than on legalities, enactment, or custom: moral obligations.

I think probably it doesn't matter whether or not he gives the gold back. But it speaks to his character.
It's kind of like cheating on a practice test. Sure, your score doesn't matter—as long as you're not cheating on the REAL test it's not a big deal. But still...it creates a pattern and habit of behavior in the cheater that it's best just not to have.

Keeping the gold is like cheating on a test?
Habit of behavior?
Best not to have?
If it makes you feel better to give it back. Go right ahead. More power to you. But that doesn't make it bad that I don't have the same need to feel good about myself.

You made the right choice...honesty is always the right answer, even when it hurts. It is good to read all these responses from fellow wowhead members and wow players telling you the same thing. I find it sad that most people today will be dishonest and make excuses for it. So, kudos to you and everyone else. Karma will repay you.

It's an Error on blizzards end because they didn't take the time to investigate it further. There people who are still waiting to get their accounts back from being hacked yet this guy got it back within' a day? Did Blizzard care to take the time to investigate? I think NOT becuase if they did they would of known exactly how much gold he had at the time it happened.
Bottom line, and this is my opinion, Blizzard failed to investigate the situation properly so out of laziness they messed up. They pay the price for it and it cost them 14,000 gold which will be returned them anyway since it's their property to begin with. If they get audited they willk now this employee failed and surely will probably noted on his record. In real life, I would of returned it becuase it can probably go as far as breaking federal laws but in this game. Nawwww... I wouldn't of returned it. Does it make me a bad guy? Yea... I guess you can say that because I wasn't honest about it but with all due respect who the hell cares about it in a virtual world?
On the side note: I'm sure they're people out there that would of taken the extra gold as a nice gift from Blizzard and would of never thought of it being an error. Not everyone who plays WOW is all up to par with the rest of us. Does it make them a bad person?

I'd like you to show me where these moral obligations are written down.
The Bible, the Koran, the f'king Kama Sutra.... Wherever you take your morals from. I waiting for you to show me your source of this "you must report all virtual currency gains to the proper authorities" obligation comes from.
You clearly said "Not obligation." Make up your mind.
