if there is something that i find positively annoying then that would be tanks who, once they have finished pulling, still jump around like mad, making us dpsers follow them around instead of inflicting damage to mobs like we are supposed to do. i know that many (youthful?) players like jumping around for no reason, and that can be distracting also. but for tanks, i find it inexcusable.

When I tank, I jump; that simple. If the DPS doesn't like it, they can make their own tanks and stay on the ground; however, as anyone can remember, there was the oh so nice heroic boss in Cata where if you didn't jump, you'd die because he'd stick your butt to the ground.....man the number of DPS I saw die to that attack cause they were too dumb to learn /chuckle.

And a lovely boss in Wrath who inflicted quite a bit of damage on you if you stood still.

Are you referring to simply space bar spamming? If so, a lot of people do that simply because they can. If you are playing a night elf and you aren't jump spamming at any idle moment you are doing it wrong. If you are referring to just moving during a pull, then that could be from many reasons, avoiding void zones produced by the trash, getting aggro on a mob that is a bit further away, trying to move the mobs a bit so they can click on a health bar easier for taunting/interrupting, etc. I don't know why you think there is a problem there. Also you can move at the same rate as the tank..... As a melee you should be capable of dealing damage while moving. As a ranged, the only time where this might be hard is if the tank moves out of your range during a long cast. Solution being: Don't be at the very max range if the tank is moving. Either way, not the fault of the tank.

you are all giving good reasons to jump and i agree with those reasons. but that is not the issue here.
and the damage you can inflict as moving melee is of course minimal compared to what you can do standing.

You move at the same speed as the tank, usually faster since most melee classes have some sort of speed boost passively built in. Unless you are playing with absurd latency, you will keep up the white damage and be in range for all of your abilities unless you aren't paying attention.

Well ... I stay on the ground when I tank, and I stay in one spot. However that's mostly since I play a DK so my way of grabbing and holding aggro is to run straight into a pack, pulling off one or two Blood Boils, turn around and put a DnD on the floor ... So if I move out of it I just waste a CD and have to continue spamming Blood Boil to keep aggro...

yes, jumping is a little misleading. what i mean is moving around, with or without jumping. and please, i am perfectly aware of the fact that many times it is necessary to move around and not stay still. what i am referring to are situations where it has no function except the pleasure the tank is getting from his play style. i see it very often, too often, and it is very irritating. i have the impression that the tank is in fact playing alone and we are just along for the ride. very often, the tank is very good and the dungeon is completed successfully, but is only fun for the tank.

I dont think the author means jumping as jumping (pressing space) as that hardly makes the mobs move.
He rather means tanks trying to do all the moves melee players usually do in pvp (trying to get on enemy back or kite), which for obvious reason is pointless in pve.
Unless of course the mobs you are fighting are throwing things on the ground and you do have to kite them around.....

Another thing to note about this, it could be a possibility that they are moving closer to the next group of mobs. You acknowledged already they are usually good tanks doing it. I know when I'm in a heroic, especially if I queued with a healer from my guild I just pull everything. AoE everything pop cooldowns to live. Whats the point of a 3 minute cooldown if you don't have to use it. When you outgear content you want to try to do it as fast as possible, which is why chainpulling is so fun from a tank's perspective.

There are still people in this game that care about something more than their private enjoyment or rather their private enjoyment comes from doing things right, rather than doing them wrong.
Okay and? Does that mean those people get to dictate what happens in a run? If you truly have an issue with the speed/mover tanks, then either make your own tank toon or get a friend to run as a tank with you; expecting every other person you PUG with to follow your 'rules' is madness in the game; I know while playing my Boomkin I'd rather the group not move so much, but as it's a low level toon, I just suck it up and dot things while we run towards the boss.

When I'm tanking, I try to get everything grouped up the best I can, facing away from the group. Sometimes, this involves a lot of resituating and moving around. This would be so much easier of DPS would also interrupt and stun, but that is sometimes too much to ask apparently.
