It's spelled character.
There should be single quotes around 'character'.

But I, as a male, dislikes playing an female char. I got one or two of them but I don't play on them. I think it's because I'd like to connect with the char I'm playing from time to time, and it just feels strange if that toon is female. I guess I'm not the regular mmo-player because I somewhat see the toon on the screen as a mirror of me. I'm after all playing and interacting with the community around me through that toon.
This is pretty much me.

I play on mostly male characters, just because I didn't feel like dealing with the people in LFD and other's on my server saying "Zomfg ur a guy, u !@$!%". I only ignore people as a last resort of them being unusually obnoxious, thus I prefer not to clog up my ignore list with people from other realms whom I may never see again.
However, after rolling a male draenei mage, and a male human warlock, I got tired of the jacked look with cloth armor, and rolled my priest as a chick. Honestly I only tell people I'm a guy if it is a long dungeon or a long battleground, such as arathi basin, or BRD.

Let's see...
Male Tauren Druid
Male Orc Death Knight
Male Tauren Warrior
Male Blood Elf Priest -> Changing to Goblin, possibly female
Male Blood Elf Mage -> Possibly changing to Male Goblin
Female Undead Warlock
Male Orc Hunter
Female Blood Elf Rogue
Male Goblin Shaman
Female Tauren Paladin
I don't care what gender you are and what gender your character is, but I will refer to the female Blood Elf Paladin as "she" since that is the gender of the female Blood Elf Paladin.

I made my own psychology and it's true!
- if you play female characters there's a female in your head
- if you play both male and female characters you will face challenges in American society
- if you play an orc there a drugged addicted violent rapper in your head
- if you play female gnomes you're a Bene Gesserit Mother Reverent in real life YAY

I'm a woman, and I play whatever gender character I want. My first toon (and up until last week my only character at end game) was a male undead. I mostly pick the gender of the character based on the class, most the time it is based on looks, or who I just think fits more.
I have:
Male undead warrior
Female troll hunter
Male troll rogue
Male blood elf warlock
Female tauren druid
Female troll priest
Male tauren death knight
But in game, if someone is playing a female character, I refer to them as she. If I get corrected I apologize and refer to them as he from now on. If I am on a male toon and someone saids he, I just correct them and move on.
The gender of your character versus the gender of yourself in real life really has no meaning to me. If you are a guy who plays a girl character or vice versa, it doesn't affect my opinion of you in game or out one bit.

I play a mix, although probably more female than male characters. I'm biologically male, but as close to having no gender identity as makes no difference. I think I might tend a bit towards female, but not enough to really care. Characters are who they are, for various reasons, and some of them are male and some are female. It really doesn't seem like there's any reason they should be the same gender as me, any more than they should be the same species or profession as me. I mean, no one complains that I'm actually a programmer and I play warlocks...
... Of course, this mindset reflects my general lack of gender identity, which I guess was the point.

This part, I pretty much agree with. I get weirded out if people don't refer to me by the gender of the character I'm on -- I have several alts in a guild, and it confuses me when I'm on one alt and someone refers to me by the pronoun or name of another. I've basically gotten used to always getting called by a nick for one of them, but different people pick different nicks.
But yeah, if I can't mirror myself in a toon at least a little, I can't enjoy playing that toon.
