This is basically my way of just pointing some things out that i like from each Build.
Shadow Locks A.K.A = Shadow Mages:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IZdxczIbzZEx0trzzhhi
With this build you have your standard 0/21/40.
You wont need Imp Immolate because i see Catacltysm as being more important for overall DPS. The less mana you spend Spamming Shadow Bolt the better so you dont have to worry about lifetapping when the healer's are trying to focus on the boss. Yes there will be raid healer's but there will be times when all heals need to go to tanks.
*I put 1point into pyroclasm just to move down the tree, put that point in w/e you want*
How i would fight with this build is just throw Curse of Shadow's Up or if there is a Affliction Lock with Malediction Tell him if he could put up His Curse. After that basically Spam Shadow Bolt. Hit ShadowBurn when Mob is about to die to max out DPS.
This Build is strictly for raiding and cant be used very well in other things such as PvP or farming as well as SL/SL.
Fire Lock:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IZdxczIbzZVx0tr0tVuV
This has to be my favorite spec for raiding opposed to The Shadow Mage spec, and ill tell you why.
A fire lock has more buttons to press when raiding on trash and bosses. The Conflagrate is like another Shadowburn but with a bit more dmg. Your Immolate is going to be your best freind with your Incinerate.
How you wanna start a fight is what i do, Cast Immolate and Press Curse of Elements. Try to do this right after you cast Immolate so you can make it into 1 Cool Down. After that you spam Incinerate, When you see That your Immolate is going to run out Press your Conflagrate to maximize your DPS. then Cast Immolate again and spam Incinerate.
The Thing With Fire is that its Instant DMG as to Shadow you have to wait for ISB *Improved Shadow Bolt* With fire all you need to do is Cast Immolate , It can crit for the most time when you cast it. It does 1800-2000 Crit when i cast it and can do 2900-3100 Crit when I press Conflagrate. This Spec is best for Raiding as well. Its ok for doing your dailys but having more than 1 mob on you will suck.
Shadow and Fire do about the same DMG from what I see. I can out DPS a mage at times.
Self Buffed: 1040 Fire Dmg 196 Spell Hit 21% Crit
I sacrificed my DMG for that trinket from Scryers that gives more Spell Hit.

Hope this serves as a means to make it easier to choose between fire or shadow. btw dont look at my armory when im not raiding i go PvP spec for farming and doing dailys.

Just my $0.02
Imp Immo>Pyro
It will be better for shard farming.
("Summon the replacement plz?","I need repair, can lock summon me back?","HS plz?","SS plz?")
Also @bag
They are pretty equal in 2.4 due to the Emberstorm buff ,but Shadow tend to have burst dmg (ISB),and benefit from debuffs from Spriest ,and another shadow warlock.Fire tend to have stable dps, and benefit from debuffs from Fire mage.

i've just moved to a more balanced spec, like demurr suggests. this is mostly because i've replaced most of my +shadow gear with only ritsyn's pendant left and want a bit of flexibilty. i think i will only miss soul leach and nether prot when i'm soloing on the isle etc. they're not much of a concern as far as raiding.
i'll still be using shadow as a default for both soloing and raiding.

um shaddowbolt loc 1240 spell dam with fel armour 0/21/40 i dont find any trouble questing i cast shaddowbolt then cast shaddowblot again = dead mob. non crits are 3k crits with ibs are 7.5 if i trinket and tear 4 procs. it not hard 2 quest when u can 2 hit anything.
fire spec uses alot more mana.
in raids u have ur token au loc for the extra 3% on soc and ur token spriest 15% shad dam
cos 13% spriest 15% sacrafise pet 15% ibs 20% = 63% extra shaddow damage. why the hell would u spec fire?

well, there's a slight exaggeration there.
i have almost the exact same amount of +damage. with 30% crit and a bit of haste, blah blah.
point is, if we're talking about soloing (dong dailies, farming for primals etc), with VW sacced for the regen my average hit is for ~2k. with succy sacced this goes up to about ~2.5k but i don't sac her for soloing.
it takes 3 hits to kill stuff on the isle but with a 30% crit rate i regularly take things down with 2. i'm not disagreeing with deadmuppet, it's very easy to solo stuff of the same level especially when you add in backlash etc.

Indeed the 2 schools are extremely close in base damage, to the point where the group setup, the tactic's roles, and how efficient your Shadow Priest or Fire Mage are at debuffing is what will make the difference either way.
For that reason this build:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=IZdxczIbzZxx0tr0tVuV
is pretty much the best DS/SnF build as it is optimised for both Shadow and Fire. The only loss is
Cataclysm
for some minor mana efficiency, but all in all for a lock this isn't a big loss.
As Destro nuke spamming is not terribly challenging, the most keen and focussed destro locks are the one that can spot moments when they need to make an extremely rapid FelDomination/Sac-macro change from one school to the other mid fight. i.e. You've decided to use fire and there is one Fire mage in the raid keeping Scorch up. And then oops.. the mage dies 2 minutes in. You can either loose 15% of your damage for the rest of the fight, or switch to shadow as fast as you can.
Also to the OP - I haven't looked it up recently, but I do remember reading that when doing sustained nuking you actually don't bother with Conflagrate. I think it was because if you compare the (more common) non-crit damage of a Conflagrate to the Immolate tick you consumed and the fact the Conflag's GCD is 2/3rds of another Incinerate, just casting another Incinerate is better (not to mention the fact that Conflaging on the absolute last Immolate tick is very difficult and in many boss fights probably not possible). I'm not 100% sure where i read it though. Can anyone confirm this with maths or a website reference?
