Do you mind reading stories with a protagonist that is the opposite gender as you?

I don't mind it as long as it's two protagonists of the opposite sex having a half naked tickle fight.
Lol no but seriously having a female protagonist dosnt always bug me, but sometimes it does, depends on the story
@soldrethar. If you like Samus to be strong and independant you must have hated Other M lol
@patty132471. It's not a double standard, it's only natural that a guy would find a male protagonist and only certin types of female protagonists easier to relate to story wise.

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about male protagonists written by women compared to those written by men?
Well I think Lucky Jim is much more akin to myself than Mr. Darcy. for example. I think Diablo Cody wrote a convincing male role or two in Juno (Michael Cera played the role decently, but without giving it individual characterisation). I had to stretch my imagination a bit but Bill Murray's character in Lost in Translation seemed quite relatable too (though more depressed). It took me ages to actually find a female novelist in my bookcase (just showing my own bias), but the father from Cold Comfort Farm works as well.

Well, it is at least special pleading to say that flawed male characters are fine but women have to be held on a sort of pedestal for a story to be interesting. I think I like flawed characters in general.
Oh yeah, my sister really didn't like "On the Road", even though it's meant to be a countercultural icon, because according to her, the main character's primary goal in life is to have sex with as many women as he can. I haven't read it so I can't really comment on the accuracy, but I don't think sexual conquest is more interesting than rampant consumption or violent subjugation. Frustrated sexual advances or guilt ridden affairs do tend to make for interesting plot points though and are handled quite well by Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene. Actually, I really disliked Atlas Shrugged's special pleading in terms of affairs, espousing sexual infidelity as a virtue in the virtuous and a vice in the abject. I got into trouble for telling my sister that I really only liked protagonists that I could identify with immediately after discussing Lolita though: I do have a double standard there in that I find child rape abominable but that I think that Nabakov wrote about it beautifully. He probably could have written captivatingly about tiddlywinks. In fact, I wish it wasn't such a theme in his books because I like my writers to be virtuous and their characters to be flawed... Can't help but suspect the author when they write on a subject like that in such a neurotic fashion.

Is it cheap to list Rowling as a favorite female author?

I don't care too much, but sometimes it can get weird if the protagonist is a girl and not thinking like I would.

Gosh, I completely overlooked her.. I wouldn't say it is, especially since the reason she didn't use her first name was because she thought that an identifiably female author would harm sales. In my opinion, all of her male characters were well written and quite convincing.
That just reminded me of Jacqueline Wilson. I liked her books when I was younger and they had female protagonists that were compelling, if a little tragic.

The only problem I have with female protagonists, when they start crossing into uberfeminism (women are superpowered, men are useless) area, that ruins my interest completely.
I don't think that female only superpowers would be necessarily a feminist idea. There's plenty of evidence that the reverse occurs in movies that aren't typically criticised for negative portrayals of women like 300 or Crank: in order, ultra buff guys taking on demoniac forces, woman resorts to an affair and then stabbing the traitor, man survives falling like a kilometer from the sky, woman gives him a unfulfilled blowjob.

I never would have even thought about it. To me the idea of feeling weird over reading a book just because of the gender of the main character/s is...weird.
Also love the whole "If there's gotta be a girl she's gotta be THIS girl, my fantasy girl" narcissistic much?

And what I meant is that weak female characters aka "Damsel in Distress" are classical characters, while "Guy in Distress", being saved by female, is relatively new and just bothers me. If they are on equal strength, I am fine, but not "Guy in Distress" that bothers me.
Then don't ever read anything by Mercedes Lackey.
Also love the whole "If there's gotta be a girl she's gotta be THIS girl, my fantasy girl" narcissistic much?Well, people want to be the hero of the book...and having the girl save the guy is just not done lol.

Actually, there is a growing trend in more modern movies and games to have a "Guy in Distress" being saved by the woman. A lot of these newer action movies, despite using skimpy outfits to draw in their intended audience, do show women who are going out and rescuing their man or male friends. Or, at least, show that whatever man is in their life isn't necessarily combat oriented. When you invent strong women characters who can make a headshot at 100 yards with a handgun while running up a wall and doing a flip over an exploding machine, it's hard for their romantic lead or comedy relief sidekick to keep up. They don't necessarily make the male character "weak," but because the female lead being so overwhelmingly strong is a main focus of the movie, they like to show that by doing the role reversal.
I'm not going to lie- when my fem-shep just threw Kaiden over her shoulder sack-of-potatoes style and hauled him off of Virmire, I felt like a boss. I also liked arriving just in the nick of time to pull Garrus out of his death trap on Omega. I don't think either of those characters were portrayed as particularly weak as a result of this, though.

Just curious, I personally don't, as a guy, as long as the female lead isn't all "girl power" and overly girly. I like the female lead to be
attractive
, tough, independant, humourous, and cool. Samus Aran from the metroid series is a good example.
Alternatively, does it matter to you if a male protagonist has rippling abs? If not, that's a pretty bad double standard.
I think there's a difference between being attractive and being good looking. For example, I've read plenty of books from the point of view of a character supposed to be very god looking but at the same time, very unattractive to the reader (i.e. total *!@#$%^). I don't mind this however, as long as that's a point of the book, and can actually find it to be very interesting.

If the character is good (and
not
sexist), I don't mind. What does bother me however is when female characters are done so that they are incredibly feminine and completely overdone. Same goes (exceptions do apply if the character is interesting enough, of course) for male characters that are all biceps.

And yes I will admit that, while not seriously caring all too much what the protagonist looks like (of course how I prefer them to look depends on what kind of creature they are, as they may not be human in some stories), I do prefer an attractive female lead as opposed to an ugly one.
A female lead played by helena bohman carter.....now THAT'S what I'd like to see :D
I feel kinda bad admiting it, but I feel the same. The possible exception being Brienne from ASOIAF.
Although tbh her chapters were boring as %^&*, but that may just be because AFFC was just terrible...
