Hi! I'm back after just after cata was release with a Level 82 rogue wearing full heroic WotLK purples...
So I'm not ready to raid and I'm well out of the loop on developments since then. I play assassination, I don't know if it's still the best DPS spec, but I want to stick with it as I enjoy the play style.
I'm trying to work out which abilities I need on my bars for PvE and which I can ignore...
When I last played, the rotation (for boss fights) was:
- Garrotte
- Slice and dice
- Mutilate
- Envenom
- Mutilate to 4/5cp and rupture
- Replace mutilate with dispatch (did this used to be called something else?) when the boss gets to < 35%
then keep rupture up and keep slice and dice up using envenom.
It looks like this is mostly still the same? but I have a few questions...
Is Expose Armour ever useful outside PVP? I notice it stacks now?
Ever need to use shiv?
Is Throw still the most pointless skill ever?
What's happened to Hunger For Blood and Cold Blood? What have they been replaced with?

Nope. You don't need Expose Armor on your bar at all in PvE.
The only PvE situation that I found it useful for is Thok HC (bats). And even then, I don't use Expose Armor itself. Instead, I use Glyph of Sharp Knives. It stacks the armor debuff really fast on all the small adds.
Ever need to use shiv?
In PvE, Shiv is used to dispel enrage buffs (Thok jailer)
Is Throw still the most pointless skill ever?
Yes. Shuriken Toss is used instead, for fights where you need it. Thok comes to mind again (goddamn, what's up with that fight?)

They're gone. I don't know what they have been replaced with, I've been plaing Combat casually for the past two expansions. I hope someone more qualified answer this question. Assassination has new abilities, but I haven't even touched it.

Be sure to use good binds (i.e. easily located) for the following abilities:
- Feint (buy the Glyph too)
- Tricks of the Trade (don't buy the Glyph)
- Evasion
- Vanish
- Preparation
- Cloak of Shadows (buy the Glyph)
- Smoke Bomb (buy the Glyph)
I've been on a hiatus, and upon returning to raid, I've been dying far more in SoO than in all of TBC and WotLK combined. Partially because I neglected glyphing defensive abilities, but mostly because I forgot how to play.

Cold blood is just gone, same with HfB, no replacements.
Shiv is also useful for pvp. Dispell enrage against boomkins and warriors mostly, and also to trigger your 2ndary poison too.
There is the shadow blades dps cooldown (that they're removing come 6.0).
Expose armor stacks to 3 max, but if you have the glyph, it'll stack to max in one application, but don't bother, there are other more useful glyphs such as the fan of knives one, blind (removes dots), etc... Doesn't stack with druid's faeire fire or warrior's sunder armor or hunter's pet's dust cloud/tear armor (which is why we don't use this).
Dispatch was just backstab back in cata/wotlk where it would refund energy if the target was under 35% if memory serves.
Edit: as far as max dps goes, when you get to around 550 ilvl, combat starts to pull ahead of assassin on single target. Combat aoe beats assassin in most raid situations, but mostly depends on if combat can use the cds effectively.
